I am vegan (pull out the pitchforks) and am pretty vocal about it on here and used to be on the other website. I wouldn't say I'm an activist per se, but every comment and post I make about the subject whenever it's brought up makes me feel like I'm making a difference. If the comment resonates with someone reading and leads to fewer animals and animal-derived products being consumed, I'm happy. So yea, for sure.
Same goes for the two communities I created and mod (c/sekiro and c/bloodborne if anyone's curious). A bot has recently helped me fill the communities with content since engagement isn't super high from community members themselves. Before the bot, I tried to make daily posts in both communities, thinking it's content that I enjoy so others would likely too. Since they're still quite niche and don't have a massive following, I think it's definitely a good start for people interested in the games
Cool post btw. I think it's easy to lose oneself in the daily monotomy that is life and work and stuff, so reminding oneself that participating in communities such as Lemmy is making a difference in one shape or form
Look, I'm going to criticize you for your well-intended but impractical behaviour, mainly because of the immediacy of the high-risk problem rather than considering your point of view as a futile long-term proposal, but know that taking time to bother with criticizing you by forming new sentences and paragraphs is because there is value in arguing with you for a bit rather than simply forgetting about you like we do with the nutcases supporting Trump. Anyway, here comes my main points:
With the time left before the elections, your previously understandable efforts to promote and establish a 3rd party to become a major contender has failed. All I've seen on discussion platforms like many politics communities in Lemmy or R*eddit have failed to plant the name of a single 3rd party in people's memory, and I'm reaching to this conclusion by the lack of specific naming of the 3rd parties in these discussions, which should a good indicator of visibility of those parties.
İımproving the adoption of a 3rd party in such a long-standing battle between 2 parties is a long and difficult effort. Toiling against the difficulty for a better alternative is commendable and a good thing, but if your long and hard toil is in risk of being to to the trash bin by the Republicans in the next election, you make sure your other neighbor the Democrats keep the dictatorial Republicans at bay while you keep toiling to get closer to fruition, even if you don't like the Democrats either in the first place.
3rd parties don't have time to gain any impactful ground within the time left. Even if all of them increase their votes and chairs and have more than 50% of the votes in the decision making with all 3rd parties combined, your government structure enables firmly-united minority groups to pass or fail decisions when the majority is undecided and disunited, which can easily be said on most matters about competing 3rd parties. A united 30% can beat a disunited and illusioned combination of a 5+5+5+10+15+5+10=55% if 2-3 of these decide to not act together with the rest on a decision.
While it can be a risk of authoritarianism to put any party far ahead of another, it is much less with one that mostly acts in the favor of its citizens than it is with one that openly advocates for indefinite hold of power through all-but-unnamed authoritarian actions. You can still think and put forward the evidence of Democrat wrongdoings and most of the leftist people will agree with you, but when you advocate for a divided fight against the threat of Trump or claim a less known party that can even be rivaled by another less known party in terms of current chance winning the elections, you can be considered inexperienced at best and a division instigator at worst, both very understandable because both are very plausible in politics.
Similar to 1, I am considering that most of you who keep suggesting 3rd parties don't even know about what those parties advocate for, did and/or do, who they are funded by, who they are talking with, who they are cooperating with and who they are opposed to, the whole scheme I mean. Again, reaching to this from lack of presenting information in these regards about these parties. All I hear from those advocate 3rd party votes is just that they don't have Biden or Trump, nothing else. "We are not our competitors" is what the Dems or Republicans supporters also say, but they say it as one point among many other points they make.
I'm not claiming any knowledge to support or debunk your knowledge or internet-fu of the U.S. parties, I am just a citizen of Turkey who has just surface knowledge of some U.S. political parties but also someone who went through the same "vote for a 3rd party, vote for another candidate in the leftist party" in the last few months before the election last year. It is a worse lack of show of governing power than Biden dozing, gazing off and stammering. Do you know what it is? It is an openly declared invitation to the bickering but prey-focused wolf pack by showing you'd rather eat the grass over there instead of here or mate with this uncooperative herd animal instead of that uncooperative herd animal.
Go toil for the Green party, go toil for another party. Take part in local promotion of these parties, help spread knowledge about them. But instead of eyeing for popularity by aiming to double your votes from 1% to 2% this election, do it on one where the wolves are starved and separated after consecutive and heavy shepherd dog victories. That is when you are safe to build lasting support for whatever you stand for.
A scientist says Britney is really pretty, the press reports scientist thinks Britney is hot, lemmy gets mad because her core temperature is the same as most humans.
What they're really claiming is it'll have PhD level proficiency at certain tasks, that is if you asked an average PhD student to code a pathfinder algorithm GPT would produce similar level output. Likewise if you want it to write an explanation of centrifugal force it could output the same quality essay as the average PhD student.
They're not saying that it'll have agency, emotion, or self-awareness. They're not saying it'll have the colloquial understanding of intelligence or wisdom, they're using intelligence in its normal use in animal biology and computer science where it refers to an organism changing its behavior in response to stimulus in a way that benefits the organism - a worm moving away from light because this will increase its survivability is intelligence, a program selecting word order that earns it a higher score is intelligence.
if you were actually around long enough there were literally polls of what to call Lemmy users. Lemons was actually the top name for a bit, but lemmings won out. So. Try not to be so needlessly mean. It was named Lemmy not just because of the animals called Lemmings, but also Lemmy from motörhead. that's like two sentences into the Wikipedia page.
10 months without moderation and it looks that clean?! Not a single pair of anime titties and no link to a prescription free online pharmacy? Lemmy never ceases to amaze me...
I previously posted this topic on the main Star Wars community, but it was removed for being too meta. Which is fair enough but it does leave is in a Catch 22 situation as you can't exactly get a SW instance started if you can't discuss starting one. Fortunately, @blaze was kind enough to suggest this instance would be a good...
The main directive of growing this site, should be “easy”. I’m telling you guys, that linux mindset won’t work here.
Yes, even though Lemmy users are more tech savvy I bet most who have signed up for a few Fediverse services have suffered Instance Indecision. Scrolling through lists of instances looking for the Goldilocks instance that sounds just right, then finding it full of 14 year old anime fans.
I've taught mature students (often retired and sometimes elderly) and you can assume nothing and go back to basics (they often preferred keyboard shortcuts to the mouse and menus). So there are likely aspects we are overlooking but one of the most important early issues to address is the problems with on-boarding.
I think specific instances really help with this but I may be biased as spotting a UK Lemmy instance made my decision easy, as I am sure it is for other local instances, especially non English-speaking ones.
For all your boycotting needs. I'm sure there's some mods caught in lemmy.ml's top 10 that are perfectly upstanding and reasonable people, my condolences for the cross-fire....
This may sound cheesy but this list is the healthy way to solve the issue people had with Lemmy.ml moderation. Thank you for compiling it, I didn't reliaze there were instances for programming and anime. Glad to see a solution where we didn't have to go through the adults (admins and mods in this case).
Also, it's healthy for the fediverse to see communities spread on to many instances but it does make Lemmy harder for your average redditor to understand (but long term goal of a healthy fediverse is more important).
I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...
The easiest way to explain it is to compare it to email.
You know how you might have a gmail address, your friend might have a protonmail address and your parents might still have their old aol email address? But you can all still freely talk to each other anyways?
Lemmy is like doing that, but for something like Reddit. If you notice, usernames have an @servername on the end and just like an email address that's the server that person is connecting through. For example, I'm Schadrach@lemmy.sdf.org.
Which means I log in to lemmy.sdf.org and use their servers to read Lemmy, but I can read, post and comment on communities on any other Lemmy server that is federated with lemmy.sdf.org just like they're on lemmy.sdf.org just like you can send an email to someone using a different email service and it makes no difference on your end.
Communities work the same way - so for example politics@lemmy.ml, politics@beehaw.org and politics@lemmy.world are all different communities hosted on different servers with their own separate posts, subscribers, mods etc. And users on any Lemmy server federated with the server that community is on can read, comment, post, etc (mod action notwithstanding).
This federation thing I keep mentioning is just which servers are willing to talk to which other servers - again you can compare to email. Sometimes email servers pop up to send massive amounts of spam, and when they do mail providers blacklist them and simply ignore all messages from that source. Defederating is the same idea. You use lemmy.world according to your username, so if lemmy.world defederates lemmy.ml then you will no longer be able to see any communities @lemmy.ml or read any posts or comments posted by someone @lemmy.ml - to you it will be like lemmy.ml just doesn't exist.
If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you'll see a link labeled "Instances", which will give you a list of which servers lemmy.world talks to and which ones they've specifically blocked. Lemmy.world has a pretty long list of blocked instances.
One of the reasons I picked SDF's lemmy instance was because they don't block **any **instances - as far as SDF is concerned it's up to the end user what they want to see. Also SDF is kinda a cool entity - they're a non-profit best known for maintaining public access unix servers and a bunch of retrocomputing stuff (like dial up internet and a gopher server) that has been around since 1987 (the name is literally an old anime reference because they started out as an anime BBS).
I grew up watching the Heathcliff cartoon, but seeing the comics being posted on Lemmy (with or without Heathcliff) are not quite what I expected from the animation.
I've been using 4chan for longer than Reddit and Lemmy combined. Mostly /vg/ (games), /g/ (tech) and /a/ (anime, manga).
Mostly for discussion. /g/ and /vg/ are decent for asking stuff if there's a general about the topic that you want to ask info about, you want a relatively fast answer, and it isn't something overly asked (e.g. "which distro should I use?" "INSTALL GENTOO" tier). Just make sure to not trust anything said there.
Other boards are typically too slow (like /ck/) or cesspools (like /b/, /b corta/ /v/, /pol/).
Hmm, no. I guess this is only a lemmy-ui frontend issue. Although I probably need to have another look at the pict-rs image settings for animated formats.
Been thinking of making a post like this for some time, apologies if some of this is not completely relevant: this community seems more like it's about Reddit the platform/product than Reddit the social "thing", but I'm sure a lot of people have similar experiences to mine. Maybe on some instances more than others....
I was able to join up on sopuli, a local Finnish instance with a small but active number of users, who post about and occasionally comment on local things in !suomi. It's still quieter that reddit in that regard, but I do at least get some local news.
I've also made a huge effort to bootstrap an active anime community here on lemmy, and luckily I've not been alone in that. !anime has been growing steadily. Instead of getting my anime fanart on reddit like I used to, I upped my usage of pixiv significantly, and then translated that into several communities and activity on lemmy.
If you can, try and get your news from local outlets, and if you actually get into that habit, set up a community for your local area, and start curating articles worth sharing, and posting them there.
I miss the sheer size of the site only because I can no longer find my niche. If I want to talk or read about a specific anime unveiling, there's maybe a few communities on Lemmy but they're completely dead. Reddit had the benefit of having a single sub for X thing be modestly active instead of as many communities as you like but nobody keeps up with them.
This is literally the only reason I've kept using reddit. I hate reddit, but I love the communities I'm involved in and I want to give back to them. As someone that's at least a little recognizable, I can't do that on the fediverse, and that sucks. I'm doing my best to encourage people to move over to this side of the fediverse, as well as continuing to use it myself (granted, more mastodon than lemmy, given more of the communities I'm a part of congregate there -- anime fans, namely) but it sucks that the exodus wasn't as big as I'd hope. But i'm doing my best to contribute to the trickle of users over to a part of the internet that does actively feel more joyful than the wastelands of other services. It's a slow process, I just wish it wasn't so slow-going
Glad you enjoyed it! I feel much of the info is lost on me. I did pretty good at the game though. I think it said my rank beat 86% of players. I'm studying music right now though, so I do spend a fair bit of time working on my listening skills. Still, I feel I just got lucky.
When your life depends on these skills, you're only going to be left with the best of the best, so it's no wonder the animals can do it.
It's been almost a year now I've been Lemmy's amateur owl guru, and I still learn so much about these amazing animals every day. Such impressive creatures!
Initially, one of .ml's admins (who's also a Lemmy developer) manually excluded ani.social from the list of instances in the join-lemmy site, and defederated it from .ml. When requested to revert the change, he falsely claimed that the instance is "full of CSAM". Eventually, the other .ml admin + Lemmy dev reviewed the "evidence" brought by the first one, concluded "there's no CSAM" here, and reverted that change.
They kept ani.social defederated, but that's fine - .ml is strictly SFW, there's some NSFW content in ani.social, so it's consistent.
Some time goes by, and a user creates a thread about "Mahou Shoujo something" in the !anime .ml community. I don't like that series; but more importantly it is NSFW, so the discussion was removed by a third .ml admin (not a dev).
Then we (a few users, incl. me) started discussing the eventual migration of the comm to ani.social. Because we knew that issues like this would keep happening, it was the best for both sides. With those first and third admins finding low-hanging fruits to wreck the discussion across multiple threads, such as "it lists to a pedo instance" or "doxxing" people. Claims that are blatantly knowingly false, because:
ani.social was linked in the sidebar of !anime ml for ages, and the local admins never bothered with it. But "suddenly" it becomes an issue, concomitantly with people discussing the migration of a comm to another instance?
one of the people discussing the migration brought the contradiction above to the admins' attention. And yet the link stayed there, even if the admins were in a position to change it. Showing that no, linking ani.social was not the real issue that prompted the removal of the discussion, but the discussion about emigrating from that instance.
In no moment, the people talking about the admin actions referred to personally identifiable information, like "you're John Smith"; we solely associated the administrative actions with the usernames. And that was done in a neutral tone, with zero harassment from my knowledge. (Relevant tidbit: both admins clearly use pseudonyms.)
To add injury, the third admin in question was grasping at straws to defend the necessity of an anime community in an instance about open source and privacy, in a way not too unlike spez' "I'm one of you! We snoos stand together!" babble.
From public PoV, the matter ends here: you have the .ml admin team enforcing hidden rules and taking users as cattle to be herded. From my PoV, it gets worse.
I used to moderate a large-ish comm there, called !snoocalypse, about Reddit's downfall. In that comm, users (including me, the mod) were consistently saying stuff like "Steve Huffman the greedy pigboy". And in no moment the .ml admins took action against it, or even contacted me to say "hey mod, don't let your users do that".
So, naming someone by their RL name to call him a "greedy pigboy" is not doxxing. But stating which admin took which action by their username, in a neutral way, is suddenly doxxing??? And there's no way that the admins never saw it, because they were often removing content there.
Of course, the content that they were removing was from another nature: posts criticising either the Russian Federation or the People's Republic of China, typically under the allegations that violated rules #1 and #2 (basically: bigotry and making people feel unwelcome, or something like this).
Don't get me wrong, my issue is not that they were removing that criticism. I probably wouldn't bat an eye if they had some written rule like "don't criticise the RF or the PRC here"; I do criticise both but I'd see it within their rights. My issue here is to distort what others users say to fit the rules being listed, in order to enforce some rule not being listed, that is literally Reddit admins tier behaviour.
Would you consume your own content?
..and do you think that you posting it has a positive, neutral or negative effect on the world?...
