Hi all, when I first joined Lemmy (and the fediverse broadly) I was interested in having discussions around animated media. Unfortunately it seems all the existing communities were either dead, inactive, had a slightly different (usually narrower) scope, or some combination of the 3....
dude this comments section is weirdly intellectual for a lemmy post. I feel like i've stepped into a debate on animals rights with a college student and ben shapiro.
I get it, fuck this guy, but not like fuck this guy that much, but also like fuck this guy. That's all that had to be said.
Thank you for all your time and great list of resources.
I did check out Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff since I spotted a Kind Ludd episode. It turns out I had Margaret and Garrison mixed up in my head, but I like all the CoolZone people.
I'll have to look more into direct action programs available in my area. It seems like it provides much more instant gratification than voting ever will! 😁
It's been a pleasure talking with you, and good luck with all your efforts! If you ever need a positivity break on here, be sure to come by !superbowl where I do highlight a bunch of direct to animal action. That's where I spend the majority of my Lemmy time.
So I have recently gotten interested in home plant based meat substitutes like seitan and this guy pops up every time I look for recipe guides on Youtube and I have noticed a few red flags. As an example, he has like 20 different hamburger recipes that all use wildly different ingredients while claiming they are all better...
We as a community (this lemmy comm is for a discord server) are staunchly against all influencers, celebrity worship and businesses who would use veganism and animal rights to grow their businesses to support non vegans. Celebrity worship is toxic. This includes by extension plant-based meats by meat companies. Come into the discord server if you want to learn more about how these companies use marketing and horizontal segmentation and how it works to grow the consumption of animal products with vegan brands. We do not support any businesses here and use generic names as much as possible in our posts for this reason.
The only thing I’m missing from the fediverse is a platform where animations and animators can connect and share their work with the possibility of having it discovered. Pixelfed still isnt in the app stores, peertube is not user friendly and has no official apps, mastodon doesnt have amy kind of upvoting or algorithm or ability to browse lemmy communities, lemmy doesnt have native video support or user follows.
When I feel like inserting variety, I'll always toss in one of the Australian owls like this one. Their general shape I refer to as a bowling pin. It makes them stand out, and the large eyes in a smaller than normal head to body size always gives them a comical look.
Like many other animals in Australia, they are very unique. The variety of Barn Owl types they have is amazing as well. Lots of color combos you won't find anywhere else, and you can see significant changes in body size as you change latitude.
I think your story is like most of ours. We didn't seek out daily owl photos, we stumbled upon them and it made our day, so we came back for more. I wanted to see Lemmy grow, and with all the stressful and negative stuff online, I wanted to keep an oasis from all that, so I just posted here every day.
It's nice since you can just scroll the pics, or you can learn a ton of great stuff about these animals that makes then so special.
I enjoy answering your questions because it spurs me to learn new things, and it's a positive experience for me to see this bring you all a bit of happiness and wonder every day.
Feel free to scroll the past posts, and don't be afraid to ask a question on an old post. Of course I encourage you to comment on new posts, even if it's just to say "wow, nice owl" or whatever in hopes it encourages other people to post.
So welcome to Superbowl, the owliest place on Lemmy. 😁
Hey mates, recently I've developed a tool to use the GenerativeAI on the AI Horde to created random avatars and banners on lemmy. To keep things spicy, I wanted to deploy to rotate the /c/piracy banner daily, as I've done in a bunch of other communities like !stable_diffusion_art and the lemmy.dbzer0.com....
not memes for me but anime. there's no way to block whole instances i don't wanna see. if i don't wanna see ani.social on my feed at all i have to block every community on the instance, which is just not possible.
memes though is gonna be hard for you because a lot of people use meme formats to communicate in any topic. the science side of lemmy memes about science stuff. the programmers meme about computer stuff. but that's not all they do, there's more than just memes, there's actual discussion too. to completely get rid of memes and never see them on a lemmy feed again is gonna be an impossible task.
this is a sort of novel follow up to a question i asked previously, which was your opinion on right of nature laws, which recognize natural entities as having "personhood" or legal rights comparable to humans. Berry was a theologian who wrote extensively on the rights of nature and ecology generally. one of his lasting works are...
I like this, and I've been meaning to read Berry for a while. I argued last year on reddit that animals have natural rights just like people do, and got no end of flak for it. It made me feel a little crazy to be so alone in something so obvious, so I'm glad to see there's a strongly document philosophical precedent.
I was also observing earlier this week that lemmy is lacking in discussions of philosophy and theology, so I'm especially happy to see this discussion pop up now.
Personally, I'm finding the above summary a little hard to follow, which makes me hesitate to discuss it until I've had the chance to read it in context. All the same, thanks for posting!
I bathe 2-3 times a day. A quick one in the morning to get me out of the house, or I just skip it if I don't have time. Cycle to work, real shower there. Then a nice long bath in the evening where I just soak and watch anime. Or browse Lemmy.
That's the easy way out. Please stick around and help the rest of us try to steer humanity in the right direction. Help the moral arc of the universe bend a little faster. It's hard work, and most of us won't see much of a return. But long-term, let's hope that humanity can.
To clarify: I'm a biologist. The perspective you've taken is basically "Noble Savage" but for animals. Animals are pushed to extinction all the time. Yes, we're incredibly good at it, and we're good at coming up with highfalutin reasons for killing things, but look at chimps, ants, dolphins...nature is brutal. It sucks to be most animals. Say a habitat changes, and a species "needs" to move into an adjacent similar habitat that's already occupied by one or more species exploiting those resources? Extinction of something is pretty likely. That's all very much an oversimplification, of course, but this is a lemmy comment.
Lemmy doesn't have the niche communities that Reddit did, and those come with a larger user base.
Lemmy has plenty of memes, politics, Linux, and anime, but there are many small communities which do not (yet) have active equivalents here.
Here are a few of my own examples, but everyone will have their own unique list: r/wheresthebeef, r/Penderwicks, r/twistypuzzles, r/Cubers, r/fusion, r/legoRockets, r/HarryPotteronHBO, r/anarchycubing, r/deextinction, r/cubinggore.
I would welcome more users if it means more niche communities.
I've been active. Any time I share an opinion that isn't in-step with the crowd, I get bombarded by people defending the status quo, insulting me, and telling me that I'm wrong because "just look at the downvotes" which is a hilarious metric.
I got banned from the Vegan community for suggesting that meat was deeply ingrained in our behavior from a cultural perspective, and simply messaging to other people that animals were alive and conscious wasn't going to cut it if they wanted to reduce meat consumption.
I also tried to convince people that rubbing BLM/anti-"all lives matter" rhetoric in conservatives faces wasn't going to convince them to support our movements, and the whole thing devolved into everyone throwing insults out, and not one person could ever explain why I was wrong.
Maybe becoming active on Lemmy isn't a great thing lmao
