Robert Towne, the Oscar-winning screenplay writer of “Shampoo,” “The Last Detail” and other acclaimed films whose work on “Chinatown” became a model of the art form and helped define the jaded allure of his native Los Angeles.

A long article, but evidently some serious organizing around women’s issues is happening in Arizona. This fake elector guy is possibly toast, but water rights and abortion are not.

You're overlooking who the GOP is in bed with... the Saudis.

The Saudis are willing to spend unlimited amounts to buy Republicans, using money laundered through the hedge funds of Ken Griffin, Chris Hohn Steve Schwarzman, Paul Singer, Bernie Marcus, Harlan Crow, Tim Dunn, Uihlein, Charles Koch, & Jared Kushner.

Breathing silica dust is bad. I'm so glad that there are government agencies with the autonomy to make rules about this kind of thing -- oh... oh oh no.

(This particular rule is under attack from multiple sides. I wonder how much money it's worth to the mine owners? How much do they get for each year of hacking and suffering in old age from their workforce? We should count it up. Write it on a cake. Make them a cake. Give them the cake. )

What if politicians own coal mines, or have invested their families in them?
Like Manchin?

@futurebird Over here in Australia, we just had the engineered stone ban kick in because of the silicosis risk, which was apparently impossible to reduce because of the nature of engineered stone (AFAIK, it's stone bits glued together with resin).

Despite some whining from the construction industry, everyone's pretty clear that not only is it bad for the industry (I'm convinced it's been a contributor to the labour shortage, given that silicosis can become severe enough to leave someone unable to work in as little as a year or two) but it's also really bad to be making literally everyone within wind distance of a construction site take on that risk. (And there have been cases of admin workers on building sites who have ended up with silicosis because they were still breathing it in, even though they weren't the ones directly handling it.) I don't think we're the first either.

If someone blocks you, they don’t owe you a reason. They don’t owe you anything. Pursuing them in other places to find out why they blocked you or to ask them to remove the block could be considered harassment. Don’t do that. Just accept it and move on.

I’ve been blocked by people I respect, and it does feel bad, but you aren’t entitled to a reason. Respect their freedom of association.

If all of your solutions require 67 Democratic votes in the Senate and control of the House along with the Presidency and you balk at voting for that, you’re very lost.

I just heard a new interview with Trump where he lies that nobody ever specifies where specifically in the debate he lied when they assert he lied.

Justice Dept. plans to pursue cases past Election Day, even if he wins
If Trump is elected president, the finish line for federal prosecutors is Inauguration Day, not Election Day, people familiar with the discussions said

Via Andrew Weissmann:

Judge Merchan moving the sentencing to mid September is smart. It gives and DA and the court time to brief the issues, but Merchan will ultimately reject the weak Trump claims, and importantly the new mid-September sentencing date will make it VERY hard for Trump to then be able to appeal to before the election as he will have to appeal within NY state courts first.
