For PS1, I really used to enjoy Tomba 2 and Tiny Tank as a kid.

bobotron , in WADs are the WAY.

If you haven't watched the Power Pak video on myhouse.wad, do yourself a favor and check it out

halfway_neko ,

Or better yet, play it blind and then watch the video, and realise you didn't even see half of the content.

This is the better option. Much more rewarding

Redkey , (edited ) in The Legendary Germs (PS1) Has Been Translated to English

This game is criminally unknown even in Japan. I first learned about it years ago and wish I had paid the high price to buy a copy then; now it sells for 10 times as much, and that's if you can even find a copy. It's the only game missing from my physical collection that I know I want.

I've tried a couple of times to get into it over the years, but the language barrier was always too high for me and broke immersion. Hopefully I and others can now give this game the attention that I think it deserves.

Edit: A link to the patch:
https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7187/

There was already a Spanish patch a few years ago, as well.

Edit 2: And now it's been flagged as "noncompliant". I'm not sure what that means, but it's not available from that site for the moment.

Strange, I'm sure I put the link while doing the post, thanks anyway.
I tried playing the Spanish one but turns out Portuguese and it aren't close enough to finish an open world survival horror.

These are the ones I play the most with

Corruption Cards

Offi's Doom XP

KetchupV4 by Sgt Mark IV

Also try messing around with Obsidian Map Maker to create your own custom maps, it's loads of fun

Breath of Fire was a great turn-based RPG series that I don't think ever got enough recognition. 1-4 are all fairly solid (we don't talk about Dragon Quarter), but 2 and especially 3 are my favorites.

Driving:

Stunt Car Racer (Amiga)

WipeOut 2097/XL (PSX)

Both are top-tier racing games.

iamjackflack ,

In addition to stunt car racer, Brøderbund’s Stunts is great. Also Big Red Racing is fun. Wacky Wheels is a good Mario kart clone. Good old school nascar games are fun if you like circle track driving.

ace_garp ,
@ace_garp@lemmy.world avatar

BRR is a goofy fun time.

Also:

Slicks 'n' Slide (Dos)

Super Cars II (Amiga)

and Race Drivin' (but only in arcade or with proper steering/gearstick setup, joystick may not do for this one)

Heads up for those not in the know, there is a fantastic patch for playing Super Mario World in a 16:9 aspect ratio:

God Medicine on GameBoy is a massively underrated RPG. Best one on GB imo, and well worth anyone's time. You'll be constantly surprised they did so much with a GB game and the theme and story is relatively unique even to this day.

DosDude , in Looking for retro game recommendations
@DosDude@retrolemmy.com avatar

Rayman. The dos version will work, or the psx, jaguar or Saturn version. Whichever you prefer.

brsrklf ,

Not GBA though. That port is ass.

Cut content, butchered music (yeah, it's GBA but it sounds bad even for for it) and different aspect ratio that cuts part of the screen vertically.

DosDude ,
@DosDude@retrolemmy.com avatar

Oh, I've never played that version. But handheld ports of games in olden days are usually on the shit-tier. Even if the achievement of porting it is commendable.

As an MSDOS and platformer fan:

  • Dangerous Dave (1990 version)
  • Prince of Persia 1 & 2
  • Crystal Caves
  • Bio Menace
  • Commander Keen series (keen 4 being the best)
  • Jazz Jackrabbit series
  • Jill of the Jungle
  • Aladdin

My favorite from the above would be Bio Menace, followed by Dangerous Dave, Prince of Persia 1 and Jazz Jackrabbit.

Most of these games should be available on GOG, if not, search for "eXoDOS".

pete_the_cat ,

Haha I completely forgot about Jazz Jackrabbit!

d3Xt3r ,

I hope you didn't forget that banger of a soundtrack!

Crystal Caves is such an iconic DOS era game. I boot it up occasionally just to enjoy the design and sound effects.

clay_pidgin ,

Bio Menace is good, but hard. Common in that era!
