    @LeviKornelsen Abuse of systems of education (propagandistic standards, forcing the children of the marginalized into boarding schools to be raised in the priviliged culture, etc.)

    @LeviKornelsen Religious blackmail. I.e. your religion teaches that people reincarnate, but reincarnation can be blocked by some certain type of person. That person is in service of baddies, and declares that no one gets to reincarnate without their permission, so behave in ways of X, Y and Z.

    @LeviKornelsen Control over the elites via attribution of offices and royal favor (french monarchy over the great nobles) : this is a control via economic and prestige power.

    @LeviKornelsen A bit of a sideways step here but I'm going to say patronage - if a person from outside the power structure wants to survive on their intelligence/literacy/skill then patronage from the powerful draws them into it, or into its debt.

    @LeviKornelsen Exactly, also "have a patron and risk losing your quality of life and comfort by crossing them."

    @LeviKornelsen The parallel to water control is food control--there's a lot of medieval laws around poaching.

    -Control of heat (laws concerning chopping firewood)

    -Religion, and hand-in-hand, tradition and customary law (your father always worked for me, so you also must). Late Rome even had laws saying that you must follow the same profession as your father or face legal punishment.

    -Public shaming/getting you to spy on your neighbors. Very common particularly alongside religion in France.

    @LeviKornelsen Restrictions on literacy and education, monopolies on resources, making it illegal to chop firewood in certain places. Forbidding people to speak a certain language or display various cultural symbols.

    @LeviKornelsen Psychological hold through religion.
