A lesson from my last campaign: if you want/need to have a character run by the DM in your #dnd campaign, you want to make sure that they are worse at combat than the PCs so that they do not steal the spotlight. https://www.veritastabletop.com/reflections-on-a-hex-crawl/

Obligatory "D&D has issues with alignment" blog post! While I'm not treading new ground with identifying the problems, I haven't seen people discussing what someone in medieval Europe (where D&D takes ideas from) would have thought about alignment. #dnd https://www.veritastabletop.com/great-chain-of-being/

If you're anything like me, the #PercyJackson show made you want to run something inspired by Greek myth for your #ttrpg campaign. Check out my blog, where I share some resources for running that sort of campaign! https://www.veritastabletop.com/percy-jackson/

One key lesson about using history and myth in TTRPG games from #PercyJackson: rather than a direct retelling of source material (whether its a myth or a piece of fiction we're borrowing), we should reinterpret. https://www.veritastabletop.com/percy-jackson/

@LeviKornelsen not sure about Africa and India but in Precolonial Americas, definitely. Also east Asia with the breaking apart and reforming of Chinese dynasties. I think the main thing people forget is that the eras don’t line up with European eras, but the way to delineate eras still are applicable.

@LeviKornelsen The parallel to water control is food control--there's a lot of medieval laws around poaching.

-Control of heat (laws concerning chopping firewood)

-Religion, and hand-in-hand, tradition and customary law (your father always worked for me, so you also must). Late Rome even had laws saying that you must follow the same profession as your father or face legal punishment.

-Public shaming/getting you to spy on your neighbors. Very common particularly alongside religion in France.

    You know what I love?

Branches of ancient technology that dead-ended somewhere, but could have carried on in the right conditions.

In my head, that's deeply engaging fantasy material for doing "Things are weird and different here".

So if you know of sources for that stuff: Grabby hands

@LeviKornelsen Semi-related, but Alchemy becoming discredited is like this to me. Medieval alchemy was not just lead-into-gold / elixir-of-life stuff, but was basically proto-chemistry. This guy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_M._Principe) has done a lot of work on translating alchemy into modern chemistry to prove that they weren't nonsense, so any of his books would be good material.

So I'm imagining a world where alchemy is not displaced and we have a more mystical & secretive form of the sciences.

It's been a minute; let's do this again:

If you are a Tabletop RPG nerd and have less than, say, 500 followers (or think you have less than 500 that are actually active):

    1. Write a post to introduce yourself and your particular nerdery, if you haven't already got one pinned.

    2. Reply in the comments with a link to or copy of that post.

    3. Share, check back to find people you want to follow, all that.

Short version: I write about using history as a way to improve ttrpgs, including a lot of worldbuilding! I also write supplements & reviews for various systems + system-agnostic stuff.

Outside of the European tradition, the most common form of divination using bones was called "scapulimancy," which involved burning bones and determining the future based on the patterns in the way that the bones cracked from the heat. How can dice determine the future in your #DnD campaign? Well, in ancient Greece, the practice of "astrogolomancy" involved rolling dice and consulting a chart that told you what the dice result meant. Basically the same structure as a #ttrpg but for your own, real future. Read more at https://www.veritastabletop.com/osteomancy-history/

@LeviKornelsen the hanseatic league cities (Lubeck, etc) in Renaissance Europe. I’d also say a lot of the Swahili Coast city states (ex: Kilwa Sultanate).

One of the coolest parts about getting involved in the #ttrpg space as a designer and joining mastodon was seeing @slyflourish favorite my introduction post. I remember reading SlyFlourish's blog back when I was first learning to DM back when I was maybe 13? Really cool just to think that Mike Shea has seen something I wrote (even if its just an introduction post).

New to Mastodon, so it's time for an #introduction . I'm Lucas. I've been playing RPGs since I was in the 6th grade, when I first got into D&D 4e.

Now, I'm a full-time history teacher, and I write a blog combining these interests: how to use history to make better #ttrpg
content, along with homebrew resources and reviews. I also publish supplements for various RPGs (most often #dnd5e ). Check out the blog at https://www.veritastabletop.com!
