There's a new free open source Reddit-style platform for the Fediverse called PieFed. It's still fairly early in development, but you can try out a demo server at:

➡️ https://piefed.social

There's more info on its official website at:

➡️ https://join.piefed.social

You can follow the project at:

➡️ @piefedadmin

It's lightweight and written to make it easier for developers to contribute. (For any devs reading this, it's written in Python.)

@FediTips @piefedadmin @Mrfunkedude I just tested I noticed two basic and important things for a user:
1- I couldn't find the search function
2- the messages are not federated in full with mastodon only a part

@FediTips @Mrfunkedude @piefedadmin Hmmm, I do hope it succeeds, but this would be the... fifth Reddit competitor IIRC , with only Lemmy and Kbin/Mbin still standing.

That doesn't matter, as long as they're compatible. If they can show each other's threads, then each new platform helps the others get a bigger audience too and grows the overall network for everyone.

This isn't like centralised social media where new platforms are incompatible and split the audience.

The platform Feddit is replacing is a search engine happy place with vast amounts of info often not found elsewhere at all.

Is the intention to make it entirely searchable so it would preform the same purpose? A resource? As opposed to a chatting discussion space?

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@kevinrns

It's up to the platform's users to decide what they want to do with it. Different people will do different things.

Why isn't it called Feddit?

@kevinrns @FediTips @piefedadmin @Mrfunkedude Presumably for the same reason Mastodon isn't called Fitter.

There was a Fediverse instance called Feddit a long time ago I think.

Absolute top notch - lot of effort and reduces so much pain for newcomers!

Waaaay better than the usual "Meh, they'll figure it out" approach 👍

It looks like PieFed is making an effort from the very beginning to make it easier for people to contribute, which is great. Love the long term thinking there!

@FediTips @Mrfunkedude There's also newly created Sublinks which is an alternative backend that's compatible with the lemmy api (and therefore mobile apps). It just started making the rounds over on the threadiverse, but they've already got significantly more contributors than lemmy and are making surprisingly fast progress. The long-term goal seems to be explicitly focused on trust & safety tooling.

@FediTips @piefedadmin @Mrfunkedude What problem do people have with Lemmy?

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@torgeros

  1. Can't speak for others, but this is the particular problem I have with Lemmy: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379

  2. There doesn't have to be a problem in order to create an alternative platform. It's healthy for the Fediverse to have several alternatives, as long as they're compatible with each other. Multiple platforms mean if one platform goes bad there are other platforms you can switch to without leaving the Fediverse.

@FediTips Okay, sold. I'll give it a shot :)

@FediTips @torgeros IIUC, there's no issue with the lemmy design or code.

Look, I too despise the CCP. I'd like to see the proper Democratic government depose Xi and restore dignity, including to the Uyghur.

But not using Lemmy because some of the contributors are tankies seems over-woke to me; not a reason to fork the whole project.

Good luck. I join you in working to see authoritarian regimes everywhere fall.

"some of the contributors"

It's not "some contributors", it's the lead developers.

That's why the official Lemmy website promotes the worst instance of all. They want to use their platform to promote some really awful stuff.

Yeah I don't know about that bud, the site doesn't seem to show any favoritism to any instances specifically. There's recommendations for specific categories, there's instances by activity. They do blacklist instances from appearing on the site, typically for CSAM or other illegal material (No I won't list them but you can see the list on their github, benefit of open source, no trust element).

ZeroDrek ,
@ZeroDrek@mastodon.social avatar

@FediTips @torgeros Most of the communities on https://piefed.social are literally just links to Lemmy.world and other Lemmy instances though so what’s the point?

FediTips OP ,
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar

@ZeroDrek

It's totally separate software run by totally separate people. That's really important, because software projects do go bad sometimes, and if there's a compatible Fediverse alternative you can go there instead without leaving the network.

I would say Lemmy has already gone bad (https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379) so I'm glad to see another alternative being developed.

True. There are already a number of other forum projects with at least some ActivityPub support, including KBin, Flarum, and Discourse. Plus a number of AP platforms with group features, like Friendica, Guppe and Chirp. Figuring how to achieve compatibility among them has been a challenge;

Oh man, I really wish fedi developpers at least tried to come up with names for their projects that didn't risk getting confused with other projects.

Piefed, read in a hurry, is way too close to pixelfed...
