#Pornhub, one of the most popular websites in the world, blocked #Texas-based access to its site 1 week after a federal appeals court in the #conservative #FifthCircuit upheld the age verification portion of the Texas law. The adult video site has previously opposed such measures in states like #Utah, arguing so-called “#AgeGating#laws are ineffective, unfair & punish the very users states want to protect.

@Nonilex In my probably too-long lifetime, the person who did the most for 1st amendment rights was not a politician. It was Hustler publisher Larry Flynt. This will do a world of good.

AG [& POS] (R) called the decision a “victory” over companies & denied the state’s violates laws. But free expression advocates, including those in the adult content industry, warn that laws like the one in TX are already being weaponized to content ranging from resources to literature.

Last June, Gov signed into , a bill requiring companies that offer “sexual material harmful to minors” to verify that its users are ≥18.
Companies that need to limit access by minors…, commonly use methods like requiring a user to list their DOB. TX’s law required users to prove their age by either entering info from a govt-issued ID or using a 3rd-party sys that uses public & —like employment, education or mortgage info— to verify age.

also required sites to display a controversial “health warning,” which the ’s opponents called “pseudoscientific.” They included language like: “ HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES WARNING: Pornography increases the demand for prostitution, child exploitation, & child pornography.”
While the upheld the age verification portion of the , it struck down the health warning req, ruling that it “unconstitutionally compelled plaintiffs’ speech.”

@Nonilex

I'm just curious... was that "health warning" actually true, or did the Texas Republicans just make it up?

@Nonilex Let's see if this wakes up the MAGA crowd in Texas to the fact that white nationalists want to take away their porn. I hope they also take away beer.

@Nonilex Their end goal will be to require ID to use the internet at all.

@Nonilex Well they have to call it a victory, they are about to have a huge number of horny frustrated citizens in a that can get more guns easier than their porn fix. They will either start looking for someone to blame or learn what VPN’s are extremely quickly.
