@parismarx The weird thing about it to me is, the only thing it’d be really compelling for is gaming, but they seem to be studiously avoiding talking about that.
@parismarx I think the key points are spot on. AVP has no vision, and Apple does not provide me with a reason why I should buy one, besides basically VR (which they very loudly not say). And, as the OG VR systems from 30 years ago: it’s to expensive for just that.
I disagree with the tone. It’s just a visionless product, no need for a call to arms. 🤷♂️🙂
They still make most of their money with „unavoidable but barely affordable“ products like the iPhone.
@parismarx Apple are screaming from the rooftops that this is an early product focused on developers and designed to make exploring a new paradigm possible. Hence the price. It’s not fair to treat this as if it’s a message for the mainstream. It’s the Lisa, not the Mac.
@parismarx The tone of this piece is surprisingly vicious; it’s written as though there’s some kind of moral or ethical reason that we should be concerned with this product. Did I miss something deeper than you simply thinking it’s dumb?
@parismarx Thanks for sharing! I tend to be less concerned with Apple products because they really focus on personal computing. Apple is not like Meta which is heavily focused on products with network effects. No amount of other people choosing to do their computing within a VR headset is going to force me to do so. If Apple makes bad product design decisions, that’s between them and their customers as far as I’m concerned.
@jjoelson But Apple’s design decisions do filter out into other companies. I would argue if Apple legitimizes headsets as the future of computing, that forces other companies to follow and regardless of what you think of Apple itself, that’s a more insular and antisocial way of engaging with digital tech being normalized.
@parismarx your blog post, even if it expresses an opinion that I disagree with, seem full of disgust and judgment for the vr medium and their enthusiasts.
That's very sad.
Its just not for you then.
@spokeek I don't really have a problem with VR. I have a problem with tech companies that need massive scale trying to push VR on everyone instead of just allowing it to be a fun thing for the niche communities who enjoy it.
@parismarx the I understand your point against meta that pushed vr to be applied on the mass market, but I don't follow you on Apple that I don't belive marketed the product to be a everyone's product, as they never did with most of their product.
