If you want your best talent to leave and go to work for your competitor, then go ahead and force them to return to the office. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/05/12/rto-microsoft-apple-spacex/

@amydiehl

It's how "this is the last straw" HR policies escort folks out the door for more money elsewhere.

The commercial real estate market is taking a well deserved beating.

Had a friend total up her gains from "work from home" policy:

  1. Improved productivity (no distractions from overly chatty coworkers, no unneeded prolonged conversations with "desperate to prove my value" middle management)

  2. Second car ownership not needed

  3. Less outside expenditures (fewer meals out, business attire)

  4. Childcare costs eliminated

  5. Reduced insurance costs

  6. Healthier lifestyle (time for exercise, home-cooked meals)

  7. Less stress (no commuting

...can avoid sociopathic customers or coworkers)

  1. Focus improvements, because environment is tailored to personal comfort, improved stamina (no high heels, comfortable office furniture, temperature is adjustable as needed)

Working from home was the equivalent of a 20% pay raise for her.

@Npars01 yes but "I'LL STILL BE LOSING MONEY IF A COUPLE OF MY EMPLOYEES NAP DURING WORK TIME!"

Employers who can't do math don't deserve to have a successful business 😂

No childcare costs !?
You mean working with children at home ?
No way.

@beatricejess @KatM @amydiehl

After a certain point, children do not require 100% of your attention.

They're doing homework, playing video games, reading a book, playing basketball in the backyard, talking with their friends,...

She was paying someone $1300 a month to watch TV while the kids did their own thing in the house.

He's 9 and he's far from that point.

"Childcare costs eliminated"?

I combined kid at home with working from home during the early phases of the pandemic and absolutely hated that combination...

@Mab_813

Depends on the child of course.

There's always one child who strives to believe gravity isn't real or playing with matches is "fun".

In her case, she has introverted children who adore that she's around, but not hovering.

Available but not "in their faces". Can make their own snacks, but still ask for help with homework. Their grades went up.

One of the few blessings of adolescence.
