SuperSpruce ,

Genuinely didn't expect this. I knew SCOTUS was delivering L after L lately, but I didn't expect them to go this far. History will not look back on this SCOTUS kindly.

Adalast ,

They are banking on being the victors.

SkybreakerEngineer ,

They are banking on having fat bank accounts

riodoro1 ,

No, they are acting like they are and it’s no surprise. Even if democrats win the presidency there will be no consequences to the republicans. None. trump organized an insurrection for fucks sake and he’s running for president now. There is no accountability to them.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

Ok, so if presidents are shielded, I think Biden should fire the scotus, reinstate a liberal one, then have them rescind the ruling.

FiniteBanjo ,

Well, Congressional Impeachment of the justices are responsible for a traditional firing, but if it's an official action then Biden can order to have them kidnapped, beaten, or even killed.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Time to unpack the court with ST6, I guess. After all, now we know it’s legal.

PumpkinEscobar ,

“Official” insurrection

Fades ,

traitors to American democracy, which is on its deathbed. Just put us out of our collective misery already goddamn

Rapidcreek ,

Historians will look back and identify this ruling as a key moment in America's relentless march to a dictatorship.

All to support an absolute moron.

Asafum ,

All to support an absolute moron. the ownership class.

This isn't about Trump, it's about the ownership class retaining permanent control of government via the Repugnant party.

ech ,

You're right, but also, at the moment their effort to do that hinges on an absolute moron.

goferking0 ,

Isnt it always who gets put in charge? Easier to control or be the fall person when their dumb

homesweethomeMrL ,

Time to start diggin’ some judge holes.

STUPIDVIPGUY ,

Get ready for the 2nd civil war guys. I know I'm with the union.

TheHottub ,
@TheHottub@lemmy.world avatar

So, now there is room for the president to be a dictator if they want to. Nothing to stop them. Trump has been poison for our country since 2016.

Not peacefully, anyway.

He's due to die of natural causes any day now, so we've got that going for us.

9 people decide to allow presidents to act as dictators

benignintervention ,

6-3 split, but yeah

JohnOliver ,
@JohnOliver@feddit.dk avatar

All 9 were part of the decision making. For me it is amazing that so important decisions are left to so few

homesweethomeMrL ,

Yeah you need to learn how the SCOTUS works and stop this bizarre threadshitting you’re doing in all these immunity decision threads.

Oh - you’re not American? Ah, well. More reason to know what you’re talking about then before you repeat it ad nauseam, isn’t it?

JohnOliver ,
@JohnOliver@feddit.dk avatar

You argue that it is only the ones who voted for who decide, where as i say its all who were involved in the decision making. Who decides who becomes the president? Id say its all who vote. You say its only the ones who vote for the president. Maybe we both are right

Still, granding the president partly immunity by deciding this is how the law should be understood, should not be down to se few people.

BTW, trying to win an argument on US politics simply by taking ownership is just childish!

homesweethomeMrL ,

Wrong. Also wrong. Oooh, wrong again. Okay, g’bye. Yeah. Bye now.

Dkarma ,

Word games don't make you right.
You're simply incorrect.

Oisteink ,

so how does this scotus work? Providing some facts backed with searchable terms or a link to legal discussions can help more of us understand.

heavy ,

"Oh so please create a lesson plan for me with links and references so I can learn!"

You sound like a jackass.

Oisteink ,

You are winning people over all the time with your great reasoning. Don’t venture outside your echo chambers

heavy ,

Do I have to put together some links on how reasoning works too, champ?

Oisteink ,

You should focus on covering your ass as you’re about to be royally fucked

heavy ,

You think you're immune? That's funny.

Oisteink ,

Yeah - I live far away

heavy ,

You probably do need those notes

Oisteink ,

Nah - I’m quite happy having a skewed and false idea about how us politics and law work. But even Europe needs to prepare. We need new immigration laws so we don’t get overwhelmed by US citizens fleeing their country only to impose the same values on us that destroyed their country.

efstajas ,

Am I tripping? They're just saying that they think it's bad that these kinds of big decisions are up for 9 people to decide. Like, "it's bad that a court of 9 people has this much power". I don't see a "both sides" argument here at all, if anything what I see is a language barrier...

homesweethomeMrL ,

A language barrier is a possibility but I read it more than a few times, and it seemed to say pretty specifically all 9 were complicit in the immunity decision because all nine had the chance to argue it.

Which. Is . . not right. I mean, how to explain a dissenting opinion?

Dkarma ,

This is an astroturfing campaign. Tons of bots saying this exact line

snooggums ,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

The shitty evolution of both sides by blaming the losing side for participating in the system.

catsarebadpeople ,

I urge you to read the dissent

LovingHippieCat ,

I think something interesting about this, besides how bullshit the immunity claim is, is that trump doesn't have immunity for private actions. So in New York, he wouldn't be immune and will still face repercussions. Meanwhile, kicking the decision on what constitutes an official act back to the lower courts is a bullshit delay tactic. It's still a bad decision all around that definitely puts presidents above the law. But there's still more to it than that.

RaoulDook ,

Well we can hope for better news on July 11th then.

Zaktor ,

Kicking it to the lower courts is a boiling the frog tactic. They'll give him immunity once the appeal gets back to them, but they want to spread out their shocks. Just like they leaked the Roe ruling so there wouldn't be as singular a rallying event.

Veraxus ,

Oh look, the illegitimate, anti-democracy terrorist organization that is SCOTUS is just making things up out of whole cloth to protect one of their own.

If Congress won’t put them in their place, it’s time for the People to do it.

Adalast ,

Republicans are just waiting for lefties to revolt. A. it gives them an excuse to call us dangerous and use it to imprison or execute us without trials. B. they think they will win whatever war they have planned so they can point to the good men pushed too far and call them radical antifa terrorists in the history books. C. they think that just because they have guns they are safe. They forget that those guns were designed by engineers, many of whom are likely very left leaning if we follow stereotypes. Hell, most all of the things modern conservatives love today were invented by leftists. Hell, Jesus is about as far to the left as you can be. What that also means is we have the knowhow and means to fuck shit up in ways they can't even imagine. The left built the nuclear bomb, y'all can't even build a functional wall.

eran_morad ,

Jfc.

not_that_guy05 ,

Ok Biden, time to send in the assassin to kill Trump since the President is immune.

ghostdoggtv ,

If it's in his official capacity it's ok. But if Biden was that type of guy they never would have allowed him to serve as POTUS in the first place. America is getting the rat fucking of a lifetime.

Coach ,

Don't forget the corrupt SCOTUS justices!

Fades ,

See, nobody needs to pack the court

TheGiantKorean ,
@TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world avatar

Now we can unpack it

tacosplease ,

Just a simple restock

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

The expiration dates on most of them are out by a few decades anyways.

Zaktor ,

That's very important. The court has given itself the power to decide which acts are official, so step one is assassinating anyone who would say it's not. You probably don't need to do all of them, just a few, then the others will get the idea.

(Note I am not calling for actual assassinations, just pointing out that the court is both the decider and vulnerable to the edict enshrining a lawless president.)

PM_Your_Nudes_Please ,

You probably don't need to do all of them, just a few, then the others will get the idea.

Yeah, after one or two, Biden could just send a SEAL team to quietly but obviously follow each of the corrupt justices around. When the justice asks what they’re doing, the only response they give is “we’re waiting for further orders.” Make it obvious that they’re being threatened, that those orders could come in at any time.

negativenull ,
@negativenull@lemmy.world avatar

From the Sotomayor dissent, which is joined by both Kagan and Jackson: Today's ruling "reshapes the institution of the Presidency" and "makes a mockery of the principle . . . that no man is above the law." The decision "gives former President Trump all the immunity he asked for and more. Because our Constitution does not shield a former president from answering for criminal and treasonous acts, I dissent."

Sotomayor does not use "respectfully" with "dissent" here or at the end of her dissent, which concludes: "With fear for our democracy, I dissent."
