It literally doesn't matter. The financial cost is of no importance to sensible people - we know that the flooding of coastal cities, being unable to grow food, millions of climate refugees, etc. outweighs any short-term cost of slowing the climate crisis. On the other hand, the financial cost is the only thing of import to fossil fuel companies, because they are capitalists in a capitalist system - short-term profit is their priority every time.
The denier line has moved on from "it's not human caused" to "it's too late/expensive to do anything about it anyway", aiming for pessimism and doomerism to let them continue business as usual.
Having things like this we can counter with helps people argue and motivate to continue the fight.
Eh, they don't care precisely because they believe they have the privilege to shield themselves, and their descendants from environmental catastrophe. Luxurious fallout bulkers are built right now to do just that: protect themselves and their children from iminent threats, be it mob riots or tsunami or nuclear fallout. They don't give a shit about the rest of us, and why would they? What do they have to gain from caring about us, it's just not in their interest to do that when they could afford to survive through this and we don't. They've already won the logic of the free market in a bloodthirsty, capital-centric world then surely they earned their superiority, and their place as the true, deserving heirs of the Earth reborn. Looking through their eyes, it's just natural selection.
Conversely, a growing number of states are committing to climate denialism. For example, last year Florida approved specific climate denial curriculum and further restricted the discussion of climate change in public schools, which is ironic considering how the state will be especially impacted by rising sea levels.
"Teacher, why is there a foot of standing water in the school?"
"Because of woke democrats Billy. Now be quiet and listen to the lesson on the war of Northern aggression and how unhappy all the black people were that the north ended their job training programs where they got valuable career skills."
I remember being taught about climate change growing up in the 90s. I wonder if less places have it in the curriculum today than back then because of its politicization or if I was just lucky
They insist on unlimited dumping of carcinogens into waterways. Because conservatives are racist, they choose the waterways that kill the most people of color.
Now the conservative "supreme" court is ready to gut EPA powers to prevent them from protecting the victims of conservatives.
Conservatives are proactively killing people of color and the fucking "supreme" court is making it perfectly legal to do.
Honestly, at what point do we stop working within the system and following the rules trying to fight these monsters? They don’t follow the rules at all. They cheat and lie at every opportunity. I used to believe that taking the high road would eventually win out, but I don’t think that’s possible anymore.
"return to the great variety of traditional crops that people used to grow more of, like cowpeas, cassava and a range of millets." It's odd that this article doesn't mention more crops. I'm not sure about their 'range of millets', but one thing I know it that the problem with millet is that it contains goitrogens with can cause thyroid problems. Diversity of crops sounds like a good idea.
