Fuck everything about that.

cron , to xkcd in xkcd #2880: Sheet Bend

I just noticed this info on the xkcd website for the first time:

xkcd.com is best viewed with Netscape Navigator 4.0 or below on a Pentium 3±1 emulated in Javascript on an Apple IIGS at a screen resolution of 1024x1. Please enable your ad blockers, disable high-heat drying, and remove your device
from Airplane Mode and set it to Boat Mode. For security reasons, please leave caps lock on while browsing.

Randall is such a genius.

kurwa ,

Boat Mode needs to be a thing, I don't know what it does but I want it.

JackFrostNCola ,

It unlocks your screen rotation settings and links screen orientation to the phones gyroscopic sensor to maintain orientation perpendicular to the horizon.

Cocodapuf ,

Yeah, now I want boat mode too!

Qwaffle_waffle ,

2024, make it happen!

Funwayguy ,
@Funwayguy@lemmy.world avatar

It'd be like the phone equivalent of Linux's diagonal monitor orientation, only now the touch screen experience is beyond fucked.

Strangely enough this might work for round smart watches though.

sgt_hulka ,

Brilliant! I'd use that as Carsick Mode myself. Maybe then I could read a map in the passenger seat without hurling into the driver's lap.

Phoenix3875 ,

But then you yourself have to be in Boat mode to browse it.

magic_lobster_party ,

Must be a new addition. I haven’t seen it either until now.

usernamesAreTricky ,

It's been there for a while, just hard to spot. From doing a binary search with web.archive.org, it seems it was added on October 5th, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20161005090723/http://xkcd.com/

I want to see IRL photo of this connection.

The knot also needs to be adapted for common two-core electrical appliance cable, if you remove a piece of the insulation on one side and with an offset on the other side, the cable needs to be twisted mid-knot to match the correct wire.

peopleproblems , to xkcd in xkcd #2880: Sheet Bend

That

is one mother fucking cursed connector

it's brilliant because it's so hazardous yet still creates a contact between two double core wires.

runeko ,

Additionally, the next "wire" would be connected reversed polarity so you would never know if grey or yellow were hot.

yetiftw ,

why would it be connected with reversed polarity?

uriel238 , to xkcd in xkcd #2880: Sheet Bend
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

WTF? the sheet bend is close to a square knot which is much more secure. Or a thieves' knot if you're looking for something that slips apart after limited tension.

ColeSloth ,

A sheet bend is more secure for cords of two different types/diameters. A square knot is for cords of the same diameter.

The issue has been automatically closed due to lack of interest after 7 days of inactivity. - git bot

floofloof ,

Every bug tracker seems to do this, and if you submit it again yours will be closed as a duplicate.

DmMacniel ,

I hate those bug trackers and forums. Like you have a problem that is quite difficult to explain. Then, after some time you finally stumbled upon a thread where someone else has the exact same issue... but there is NO solution and the thread was locked due to inactivty.

WHY!?

Feathercrown ,

7 days is the cutoff where it goes from being a bug to being a feature

Hamartiogonic ,
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I recall reading an article about version numbers, and it mentioned an interesting example of some app where the version number is essentially pi. Each update just adds another digit to the version, so eventually it’s going to get really long. When the developer dies, all the remaining bugs in the software will officially become undocumented features.

Even better idea: Rent a warehouse, buy some pizzas, and fix the bug ourselves!

I know I'd enjoy that much more than a beach house

toynbee , to xkcd in xkcd #2881: Bug Thread

One time I had this experience in reverse; I was investigating a problem and found a forum post about it from an ex coworker with a recognizable username. (Unfortunately he hadn't found a solution, either.)

key ,

I had that once! Googled "how to run X on Y" and got a familiar name on a mailing list. Turns out he already did what I was about to try to do.

toynbee ,

Nice, you got fortunate!

Wrench , (edited )

I've run into that where code was twisted in knots, so I went with an intuitive approach, just to run into an error. See ex employee from before my time's post. Revert, add comment detailing why, with link to post.

Edit - Also, another coworker reviewing PR with notes commenting "oh yeah, I wasted a day on that too. Good call on the comment and link"

Yet another XKCD where he delivers the punchline, and then goes on to explain the punchline.

threelonmusketeers ,

Here's the explain xkcd, just in case you need an explanation of the explanation of the punchline.

Wrench , to xkcd in xkcd #2881: Bug Thread

They forgot the "admin closed as not an issue" step

TugOfWarCrimes ,

Or the even more frustrating OP reply "fixed thanx" with no details on how they fixed it leaving everyone else in the dark.

DudeDudenson , to xkcd in xkcd #2881: Bug Thread

I once posted an issue for Kibana not letting you pick colors manually for certain graphs.

By the time they got around to it I had changed jobs 3 times.

Picking colors manually on a dashboard is a super basic feature

palordrolap ,

Reminds me of the guy who was the original reporter of a fault in some software that went unfixed for years.

He eventually applied for, and got, a job at that software's company.

His first day, he logs on, and goes to find and then fixes that bug.

With a sigh of relief, he then logs off and quits the job.

(I believe this is a true story, but someone will undoubtedly be along in a minute to confirm or correct. With a sigh of relief no doubt.)

huquad , to xkcd in xkcd #2881: Bug Thread

Fixed it! Thanks guys!

never heard from again

EmoDuck ,

I found a solution. This should work: dead link

anarchy79 ,
@anarchy79@lemmy.world avatar

I find people are actually pretty good about this online, i come across a ton of 2 comment posts consisting of user asking for help with a problem answering themselves with the solution they found while waiting. It's become better.
