Nilz , to Gaming in Warner Bros. Discusses "Volatile" AAA Console Games, Will Lean Into Free-To-Play And Mobile

He states the AAA market is volatile because succes is never guaranteed. Hogwarts did well, but:

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, was a disappointment for the company.

Newsflash: good games people actually want to play do well and bad games no one wants to play do bad.

How are these companies so out of touch?

scrubbles ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I'd say it's remarkably consistent how gamers will pick up on budget reductions and cost cutting in games. This isn't the movies, we aren't going to just spend 2 hours with a piece of media where some editing handwaving can get us to ignore or not even notice something. These are 40-120 hour games here, we're going to notice when business stepped in to tell the creative folks to drop something.

Even Hogwarts, a game that I 100%'d, was obviously affected by that. The fucking Merlin Trials. Revelio? You can't tell me there wasn't some committee decision that was "We have this big open world, just throw those in every 100 feet or so to make it feel active". The more corners are cut, the more gamers will notice. They can bank on that.

Nilz ,

Yeah exactly. Also annoying things like "let's change this concept that works by adding stuff that's in fashion but doesn't fit the game at all". Like Battlefield 2042, the concept of Battlefield stayed relatively the same throughout years and releases and it just worked, but they just had to include heroes this time because hero shooters were popular. It doesn't matter that it meant there were only doppelganger heroes running around instead of an actual army of soldiers.

I believe bullshit like this is exactly what made Suicide Squad such a let down.

Cethin ,

This is implying HL was a good game, which it wasn't. It was just a good looking game with a popular IP.

Still, your comment is mostly correct, but bad games can do well with luck or the right strategy, and sometimes good games fail because they don't get the support they need.

DdCno1 ,

Don't be overdramatic. It's a good game, certainly above average. Just because it's not the game you expected it to be doesn't make it terrible. This reminds me of the ridiculous hyperbole surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, that it was a terrible game, even "one of the worst games of all times", because it wasn't the second coming of Christ either, just a good RPG with teething issues.

Yearly1845 ,

It was exactly average imo. It didn't do anything new or interesting, the story petered out at the end, it was punishing on mid hardware (but the dungeons were nicely optimized) and the end game was boring, repetitive, and formulaic.

They had all the ingredients to make an amazing game, and didn't.

That doesn't make it awful, but I'm in no hurry to replay it.

Cethin ,

No, it's terrible. The combat is fine, and the Hogwarts section is alright, but everything else sucks. Doing the same thing dozens of times just because they didn't have time or creativity to fill out the world sucks. The random loot system sucks.

I think the biggest thing (for a Hogwarts game) is how little they seem to care about the world it's set it. Some of it seems like they care, but then they do things like having the groundskeeper tell you how to open locks and to break curfew (although there literally isn't a curfew besides this mission). You go and break into people's houses or into places you "aren't allowed" only for literally no one to care or even notice. You can use dark magic, even in Hogwarts and on students, and no one cares. There's so much that's just hollow.

I really wanted to like the game. It's a bad game though. It's not just a game I don't like. It's a bad game. I could write so much more (and have), but I think what I've listed here is enough.

They need to do the same with the sequel that starred David Hayter (voice actor of Solid Snake in the 1998 to 2010 games).

Incredible Mark Hamill Cult Classic Lands On 4K Blu-Ray This Summer

I come to Lemmy to get away from frustratingly annoying titles that intentionally miss out a key piece of information - in this case the title of the film or TV show the article is about - to trick people into loading the page, only to find is a film they've already seen or don't care about or whatever.

I just ignore headlines like this now and move on, don't give them what they want - clicks.

I get ya, I hadn't even really noticed since the movie was named in the box below.

But it is frustrating, and I do tend to block communities and posters that seem like advertisements.

Exactly. Content creators gotta eat too, so there are levels of 'please click on this so I can eat' that I'm prepared to accept in the landscape of 2024 digital information exchanges.

I think of this as a JJ Walker vehicle more than Mark Hamill. Saw it several times on cable back in the day.

It's good schlock, verging on something better.

I remember my friend and I discovering Guyver in our local blockbusters. Here in the UK, it was called Mutronics.

The first film is quite silly but lots of fun. The second takes a more serious tone and I'll always remember it has the voice of Metal Gear Solid's Snake, David Hayter, in the lead role.

NJSpradlin , to movies in Movie Trailers Are Killing Movies

Just stop watching trailers and go in blind.

One of my favorite reveals was finding out that ‘Passengers’ wasn’t a train movie, which made everything that much better being blindsided by a pretty decent scifi story when I was expecting another train murder mystery.

northendtrooper ,

Which why I refuse to watch anything on Deadpool 3. I did the same with Dp2 and enjoyed the movie that much more. Trailers just steal endorphin rush from the main event IMO.

Emperor OP Mod ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

The trailers for the original DP completely ruined the film for me. I refused to watch them after that. I know I am going to DP3, so I don't need any other marketing thanks.

Emperor OP Mod ,

Just stop watching trailers and go in blind.

Bit difficult to avoid in the cinema - I already arrive late to avoid the ads, getting the timing right to avoid trailers too would be tricky.

NJSpradlin ,

Noise canceling headphones and an audiobook or music, I do it every time.

Emperor OP Mod ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

That's commitment.

Veraxus ,

I am not paying money to see something I know nothing about. They already bombard you with 15 minutes of ads and 15 more minutes of trailers, and charge you for the pleasure of wasting so much of your precious, unrecoverable time.

And when you hit your 30s/40s and have kids, going to the movies is not just costly, it’s a whole… endeavor.

“Going in blind” sounds great, but it’s just not reasonable or feasible for the vast majority of people.

NJSpradlin , (edited )

That’s why also waiting until they’re streaming helps, too. If it’s an IP I’m already interested in, I’ll see it in theatres, blind, if it’s something new I’ll generally wait for it to be stream able then do the same at home.

Edit: case in point, I’m watching Tenet now and had no clue what it was about and it’s blowing my mind. I can’t believe I slept on this one for so long.

MindTraveller ,

Emperor OP Mod ,

magic_lobster_party ,

You mean the quick roll of cool shots before the actual trailer starts? Mainly because internet is now about competing for attention. If you haven’t captured the audiences attention within 5 seconds, you’ve lost. They’re on their way watching something else instead.

kokesh ,
@kokesh@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe, what I meant is that The trailer starts.... now 💩

magic_lobster_party ,

Yes, that’s the battle for attention

dpkonofa , to movies in Movie Trailers Are Killing Movies

Or maybe the issue is that no one wants to go to the theatre anymore and both of these movies will perform just fine on streaming services. My local AMC theatre is dirty, sticky, and oily everywhere. None of the employees give a flying fuck and the management obviously just wants to squeeze as much money out of the operation as possible for the least amount of care and concern. People still talk and are generally annoying during movies in theatres. There’s no movie, Furiosa or otherwise, that I would prefer to see in a theatre anymore.

Jakeroxs ,

On the flipside, my wife and I go to eatery-style movie theaters and the chairs are very comfortable, the food is expensive (but so was just candy/popcorn+drink combos of the past) and generally the food is actually good. Maybe just need to find a better theater for you to enjoy the movie going experience.

We also rarely ever go on an opening night, much nicer when the theater has less people in it.

Devdogg ,

But what if I don't want a steak or a burger while watching Furiosa?

protist ,

Then don't order one? You're not required to order food at places like Alamo Drafthouse. I typically get a basket of french fries and a couple beers. They're pretty strict about disturbances in the audience too.

I went to a Cinemark once not too long ago, on the other hand, and it was a gross mess. The people in the seat next to me dropped something under their seat and pulled out their phone flashlights to look for it. Someone from staff came out with a flashlight too. It took them like 10 minutes to find whatever it is they dropped, they talked the whole time and it was super disruptive.

Jakeroxs ,

Like the other commenter said, don't order it then, it's not a requirement to order like a comedy club lol

LNRDrone ,

Yeah, same here. For the couple movies a year we actually want to see in a theatre, we go to a "VIP" one that serves alcoholic drinks and some snacky foods on top of the typical movie theater stuff. No teens allowed because of the drinks. So much cleaner in general and comfier seats than a typical theater. It's a bit more expensive, especially when overpaying for the beer, but it is for so much better experience.

dpkonofa ,

Nah. We have those too and I used to like them just fine (a few different chains, including Alamo) but not enough to excuse the servers doing the duck-server squat in front of you every 5 minutes.

myrrh , (edited )

...when even the drafthouse is doing substandard presentation, what's the point of going to theatres anymore?..they lost the plot when they added recliners and jumped the shark upon selling to sony...

maegul Mod ,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

How much of this is an enshitificatin dynamic?

My impression is that cinemas used to be everywhere, like corner sandwich shops almost, and have been killed off by mega corp monopolies.

Like the film industry itself, it could just be the sort of thing best done without trying to make a significant profit, but instead happy to break even.

heavy , to movies in Movie Trailers Are Killing Movies

It sucks going to the movies, at least for me, so that doesn't help. Then the movie trailers themselves are spammed at me in all forms of media like a pop song getting worm out on the radio. I'm interested in seeing the Deadpool Wolverine movie but there are so many dumb ads about it that I'm already a little turned off now.

I'm tired boss.
