It's impressive that Russia is so deeply entrenched in our government, we can't even arrest sitting politicians who we know take money from them as they vote to undermine US aid to Ukraine and badmouth the idea of NATO and allies.

"Just how outsourced is Boeing’s production? Almost two weeks after the Alaska Airlines blow-out, it was revealed that the door plug that blew out of the Alaska Airlines plane wasn’t actually produced in Wichita. It was produced in Malaysia, where workers’ concerns about speed of production and quality oversight are apt to have even less impact on their managers than in the United States."

"We recognize that the requested fee is unprecedented in terms of absolute size," the three law firms said in a filing with the Court of Chancery in Delaware.

The fee works out to an hourly rate of $288,888, they said."

@GottaLaff I'm wondering what this fee works out to, with risk taken into account (hoping for the 2 numbers to calculate it).

Would be willing to guesstimate (or data if you know offhand) of what you think:

the probability of enforcement (from 0 to 100% of total cases, whether investigated or not) might look like, and

the average fine imposed in excessive compensation cases?

If not, that's fine; it seems like you might have a familiarity with the history of it, so I thought I'd ask.

Today in Labor History February 4, 1974: The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) kidnapped Patty Hearst, granddaughter of American publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, in Berkeley, California. One of the SLA’s demands for releasing Hearst was for her family to pay for millions of dollars’ worth of food to be given out free the poor and unhoused of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Hearst complied, with various community organizations distributing 100,000 bags of groceries at 16 sites in 4 counties, before violence brought the program to a halt. The violence occurred because the crowds were bigger than expected and workers started throwing boxes of food off of moving trucks. As a captive, Patty Hearst was held in a closet, blindfolded, with her hands tied, raped and threatened repeatedly with death. She was later offered the choice of freedom, or joining the SLA. She chose the latter. Consequently, she was later sentenced to 35 years in prison for her complicity in SLA robberies. After several years in prison, her sentence was commuted by President Carter. President Clinton pardoned her. Congressional Representative Leo Ryan was murdered by the Jim Jones cult in Guyana several weeks after collecting signatures for her release. Actor John Wayne, of all people, expressed frustration that everyone accepted the idea that Jones had brainwashed hundreds of his followers into mass suicide, but wouldn’t accept that the SLA could have brainwashed a teenage girl. After her release, Hearst went on to become an actress, appearing in several John Waters films, as well as many others.

Apple’s journaling app! (If I’m trapped in a “walled garden” might as well check out the plants.) The app uses location, photo and other data to suggest events to journal about— The photos help jog memory & make writing less daunting.

I hope that more apps make use of the api — although wouldn’t it be nice if it were an open “event” protocol instead? (and if one could export journals to, tumblr)

    Inflation, right? Wrong.

Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Huggies, reported that the cost to make its products fell by $75 million. They took the money and ran, banking $168 million in operating profits in Q3 2023.

Now, new research shows that corporate profits drove 53% of inflation during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023. During the 40 years prior to the pandemic, profits drove just 11% of price growth.
