#Trump spreads #violent rhetoric by suggesting migrants should be pitted in fights for entertainment.
During a speech to #Christian #conservatives on Sat afternoon, & AGAIN at a rally in Philadelphia that evening, Trump claimed he told his friend Dana White, pres of the UFC, that he should start a spinoff competition featuring migrants, as part of his riff on restricting #immigration.

A student asked me “If I really wanted to do something about climate change & all this injustice do you think I should just try to become a billionaire so I’d have real power? Or should I be a judge so I can make the big decisions? or president? Who has the most power? who can fix it?”

me: Listen if I knew the answer to all that I would tell you. I think it matters what you are good at? What you think you can do well.

student: whatever it is I need to do well I will learn it.

@futurebird IMHO a huge part will be played by what happened during their journey.

If he's fine with explaining to others the "billionaire" route is probably the one that might give them the better platform at the end, but what happened in between?
Will becoming a billionaire make them slide deeply into capitalist indoctrination thus rendering a sociopath and thus forgetting why he set off to be one in the 1st place?

Normally I take the bus. It takes 40min, but since it’s rush hour it would take 65min. So, I’m walking to the subway. When my leg was injured I’d have no choice but to be late — the subway is too far and too many stations aren’t accessible.

The major avenues into the city are like parking lots. Millions of New Yorkers leave hours early to avoid rush hour. My work is less than 3 miles away but it might as well be on another planet.

If not congestion pricing then WHAT will ya’ll do?

@futurebird I don't understand why do people still pile up in NYC

unlucio ,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird I'm not sure I understand, it sounds like a line from a cheap musical about someone spending their life waiting for a "breakthrough" and it never happens.

Every time I got offered a job in NYC I turned it down for 2 main reasons:

  • the USA doesn't have a healthcare system
  • I'm not going to pay 4k/mo to live in a shower.

It's a pretty roomy planet, plenty of options besides NYC

unlucio ,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird NYC is hardly the center of the universe.
If NYC feels like the center of your universe, may I suggest you expand your horizons? :)

Considering how the expansion works the center of the universe should have plenty of space, so no reason to sacrifice decent living space.

unlucio ,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@ElleGray Once again humans show pretty well how shortsighted we are:

"AI" is not gonna take jobs, entrepreneurs are gonna choose machines over humans because they're cheaper.

We need to fix the horrible culture of systematically dehumanizing and cheapening humans until they're squeezed for all they can produce and paid as little as possible so they can keep being squeezed.

The problem is not technology, the problem is that our current model raises greedy psychotic bastards to the top.

Corporations are weaponizing "Free Speech" to eliminate safety notices regulations. This is a consequence of the Corporations United decision which ruled that human rights apply to corporations, even though those are not in fact human.

unlucio ,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@rms I never understood why corporations can leverage on free speech:
free speech is for people, and corporations aren't people.

    We've opened formal proceedings against Meta regarding the protection of minors on Facebook and Instagram.

    The systems of both platforms, including their algorithms, may stimulate behavioural addictions in children, as well as create so-called 'rabbit-hole effects’.

    📣 Young Europeans are not only ready to vote but are engaged and active in policy and decision-making

    Our latest on Youth and Democracy shows:

    🗳️ 64% of young Europeans intend to vote in the next European elections on 6-9 June;
    🤝 64% have participated in youth organisations' activities in the past 12 months;
    📣 48% had taken action to change society including signing a petition or participating in a rally.

    Find out more about our findings: https://europa.eu/!XPtmnC

    @unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

    @EU_Commission 64% means 34% will most likely be alienated.

    We need a voting system that fosters everybody's opinion, even of those that do not find anyone worth their vote. Not voting should be counted as a negative vote for everybody.

    1st-pass-the-post is failing us, we need something better and most of all stop considering low percentage a win.

    Just learned that a very promising early career scientist in my discipline has left academia, not seeing a desired career future for herself here. That company is lucky to get her. Yet, it saddens me enormously that it is often the most dynamic, brilliant, curious once, who are challenging status quo, committed to diversity and making our world a better place, who are leaving .

    What are we doing wrong to make academic careers so unattractive for the best young minds?

    Yes, bigotry got a bit worse, but the base ideas seem still the same:

    1. fuck the poor, they deserve it
    2. individualism to the max, and fuck everything else.
