Two years ago today, the Dobbs decision was leaked.

No matter how hard he tries, Donald Trump can’t sidestep his role in abortion being banned for millions.

In 2016 he pledged to remake the Supreme Court with nominees who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

He is directly responsible.

I'm not saying we shouldn't worry about how China might be using TikTok to steal our data and manipulate us...

But why aren't we at least as worried about the U.S. billionaires who own the other apps stealing our data and trying to manipulate us?

When Mark Zuckerberg puts his goal to remove the USA from the world in writing, because it is in his way, then I'll worry about him as much as the Chinese Communist Party!

Who do you trust more with TikTok — China, or American billionaires? https://robertreich.substack.com/p/who-do-you-trust-more-with-tiktok?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

> True, America’s billionaires aren’t in a global race with the United States for world dominance. But they’re in a race with the rest of America to dominate the United States — a race which should be of no less concern. The lure of unfathomed wealth can be as corrosive to the common good as a competing nation’s determination to beat us.

The ability to restrain speech and peddle ideas is more problematic, particularly when China is trying to overcome the militaries of the world.

We know the GOP is too weak to use impeachment or the 25th Amendment.

We also already know the electoral college has failed in its supposed duty to protect the country from unfit candidates that try to become the President of the United States of America.

This is a fairly easy answer. Signal refuses to take shortcuts that others are happy to use.

You may find this virtuous, but I'll argue that it isn't.

It's much better to start by having windows that don't lock than to keep holes in your walls all year while waiting for windows that are insulated, lockable and can be cleaned from the inside.

Signal leaves the holes until they finish the insulated window that also creates electricity.

"Waiting for Mueller prevented us from talking to the American people about the facts we already knew about Trump’s rancid relationship with the Russian government. We should not repeat that consequential mistake again this year... We should take these trials from the legal domain and bring them into the political one." -Simon Rosenberg

Really smart advice! Sitting around with bated breath for courts to move on matters that the American public already know in their hearts is a sucker move.

The facts of what were done are often not directly available immediately when the results are happening. We still need to go back and report on the results, and why they were likely signs of treason.

"the message explained that the CIA’s counterintelligence mission center had reviewed dozens of cases over the last several years wherein foreign informants were killed, arrested or likely compromised."

There is this notion in futurism and scifi speculation conversations that "technologically advanced" species are less vulnerable to extinction.

I'm skeptical. Technology solves many problems but causes new ones.

The primary factors that protect against extinction are:

  1. Sheer numbers
  2. Dispersion
  3. Diversity

Technology can aid in improving these factors, spreading people over more continents, or worlds, increasing population.

But there are other ways to meet these goals.

tcely ,
@tcely@fosstodon.org avatar

I'm not entirely convinced that technology aids in improving diversity.

There seems to be a strong incentive to hoard techniques and technologies, then when that breaks down eventually the people who didn't have access tend to do things the same ways as those who did.

If you want to control who can send you DMs, you can optionally block incoming DMs from people you don't follow:

  1. Log into your server's website or web app
  2. Click ⚙️ Preferences
  3. Click Notifications (on the mobile website click ☰ and then Notifications)
  4. Tick the box marked “Block direct messages from people you don’t follow”
  5. Click the "Save Changes" button

NOTE: If you block DMs, it's a good idea to mention it on your profile. People DMing you may think you're ignoring them.

It would be so much nicer if your profile just changed to describe your private messages settings without forcing the user to add a disclaimer manually.

It's unfortunate that manually changing the profile is needed. I'd much rather just have the software change what is displayed in the profile based on the value of the setting.

You can attach images, video clips, audio files and GIFs to posts on Mastodon, just click the attachment button (usually a paperclip 📎 or a picture 🖼️ or a landscape 🌄 ). Lots more info about attachments on Mastodon at:

Audio and video can be any length as long as it's within the file size limit.

Animated GIF files can be uploaded as attachments just like still images. Alternatively, you can embed GIFs from GIF services by including the GIF's link.

The last time I tried both PDF and MP3 files would not work as attachments...

Has that changed?
