Can someone explain me USA obsession with prom and similar school rituals?

I just don't get it... Why is that important, especially for kids now, that feel like they need to do a YouTube video asking for a date or doing some meme stuff. Some teens even hire the hottest celebrity or ask them to appear in their prom? This is so bizarre for me, all that just for a frivolous night....

@sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world avatar

Prom is part of the culture and teenage experience here. Some people are more into it than others. It's ok not to totally understand or like it. I'm sure there are things that we don't understand about other places too.

How do I explain two years of doing nothing to a university for masters?

Ever since I've graduated on September 2022, I've not had a job. Maybe a crappy internship, but I wasn't provided with a 'certificate', or letter that proves if I've worked for them. That was around October 2022, and I quit voluntarily at the end of January 2023. Since then, I've not worked anywhere as a software dev, be it...

To validate your perspective: I am a hiring manager in tech in the US. I will greatly discount any resume over 2 pages (especially for a higher level candidate). For entry level candidates, one page is sufficient for me. I'm also less concerned about gaps in resumes and more concerned with ability to learn - so I look for things that demonstrate that.

I mean, I think we are all wondering that...

I ran a small business and found the opposite to be true (particularly with people straight out of college) if given training and support, respected and incorporated their ideas, and provided transparency into the running of and health of the business. My take away isn't that people don't want to work, it's that they want to be valued.

@sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world avatar

We paid as much as the market would allow (living wage with health insurance and retirement, but not extravagant by any means), so even wages appears to be flexible if you treat people like humans. The big take-away is that some business leaders just suck.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

That kinda makes sense because that is the how it is intended to be used (from a punctuation perspective).

el·lip·sis
noun
the omission from speech or writing of a word or words that are superfluous or able to be understood from contextual clues.

I think schools stopped teaching it at some point. Legal docs are one of the places that use it as originally intended. And, I guess, older folks.

M, T, Th, F: work from home, have lunch with my husband (if work schedule allows), play with kids when they get home from school

W: work from home, have lunch with my husband (if work schedule allows), badger kids to do music therapy, play with kids

Sa: business meeting with my dad, play with kids, nap, grocery shopping

Su: play with kids, nap, play with kids

I'm in charge of all adhoc things outside of the house and financial. Husband is a stay at home parent and does all the home stuff.

Back in the days of non-ironic MySpace, I used it to promote my band and my now husband was one of the people I contacted. A few days after that, we ran into each other at a local bar in line for the bathroom. I got his contact info and asked him out on a date. We've been together since.

How is it that no company has union busted by handing out shares of the business to their workers?

sunbrrnslapper ,
@sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world avatar

I had a near zero cost business. Basically I needed a computer, phone (already had that) and M365. It was $60 to create the biz myself. Any professional services company falls into this category. So they do exist, even if in small numbers.

sunbrrnslapper ,

Business consulting. Theoretically, anyone can do it without training and experience (although unlikely due to client expectations). But graphic design falls into this category and is more likely to be possible with a portfolio rather than education. Also, I got paid for all of my experience that allowed me to become a consultant, which in turn covered the cost of my schooling - so I don't really count that. Basically, you can create this kind of business with some elbow grease.

Yeah, I agree we are in a big economic shift (akin to the invention of the tractor that displaced hundreds of thousands of people - side note, why does no one talk about the ethics of the tractor?). I expect AI drive new business models, and some people will lose their jobs or have them greatly changed. But I'm not totally sure that any of that negates the possibility of some (albeit few) low startup cost businesses. They may just look different that they did 10 years ago.

You are right, btw, about a 20 year training gap/issue. Businesses have to figure out how to rapidly develop their people, or they will have no experts standing at the end of the AI machine - risking the overall quality of their work and products.

Here's how I try to wrap my mind around the changes coming (I know it isn't exactly the same, but it does put the scope of AI into perspective): Amazon started as an online bookstore out of a garage. People actually laughed at them. Today, they are responsible for huge shifts in the retail and book publishing industries. Lots of jobs were lost, but other jobs and opportunities were created (such as self publishing for low cost). AI is like this, but amplified.

The SCOTUS has that much power by design: to create checks and balances. It literally is intended to have as much power as the executive and congressional branches.

I would say something like:

Thanks for the ideas, [person's name]! I have found another way that allows me to get the same to outcome that is quicker for me. To keep things moving efficiently, I recommend that we each use our own techniques. If they clash at any point, we can discuss how to work though that when it comes up. Cool?

Consider the possibility that your way is causing issues somewhere before you have this conversation otherwise you sound really tonedef.

Doesn't that put the 14th and 5th in conflict? I made the assumption that due process (5th) was assumed/required when the 14th was written.

But they did commit crimes. There is a list of crimes in this article:

Examples of crimes include

  • Entering Restricted Building or Grounds with a Deadly or Dangerous Weapon
  • Obstruction of an Official Proceeding

Side note: E Jean Carroll has had an impressive career that is overlooked because of this one incident she did not want. She was a gonzo journalist, wrote for playboy, wrote for SNL, and wrote a biography about Hunter S Thompson. It is a shame Donald Trump is what she will be remembered for. Here's an article with some of her career: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2023/04/28/e-jean-carroll-journalist-writer-new-york/11752140002/

They will rule he wasn't given due process (not convicted of insurrection) and therefore can be on the ballot. It is the most straightforward path.

sunbrrnslapper ,
@sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world avatar

I suspect that the SCOTUS will say the 14th Amendment is unclear and then fall back on the concept of due process. I don't like it, but I do think that is what will happen.

sunbrrnslapper ,
@sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world avatar

Kinda... It is clear that an insurrectionist can't hold office. But what defines an insurrectionist? Is it a matter of inflammatory speech? Or is it a conviction of insurrection as a crime? Somewhere in the middle? That is where I think they will be hung up - and err on the side of conviction or due process being required to label someone an insurrectionist.

Again, I want to say I am not in agreement with this likely approach. I just think this is how it will play out.

sunbrrnslapper ,

I have a gut feeling that if she is the nominee, she will win the general election. I feel like there are a fair number of conservatives who aren't compelled to vote or even would vote for Biden if Trump was the nominee. But without Trump as a motivator, the math changes a bit.

sunbrrnslapper ,
@sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world avatar

I completely agree, although I think AI is more likely to have impact marketing, communications, PR, creative and PM type roles (and there are a lot of those in tech companies). I suspect we will see a noticeable reduction in tech workers over the next decade.
