You make some excellent points and I want to say that I think it is really unfortunate you got hit by the downvote bus.

It is very telling when the laws are used to dissuade and punish the illegal immigrants for working instead of the companies and corporations for hiring them. If you make illegal labor unprofitable then you will largely get rid of it.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

When I say illegal immigrants I'm talking about the way they entered the country. Illegal is an adverb in this situation because it describes the way they immigrated.

In the future I'll try to use "illegally immigrating persons" so as to make this absurdly clear.

Fresh Graphene. In order to get stock Android back you would need to install it back on your phone. A factory reset removes all data, settings, and apps that were put on the phone by the user.

It seems like reading comprehension is not what it used to be.

"Much like" == "very similar too" AKA, "close, but no cigar"

You wouldn't compare something to the same something, that's kind of the point of comparisons.

There are many different flavors of Christianity just like there are many different flavors of Islam. Each flavor has its own set of doctrines that they apply to themselves. None of those different flavors can claim to be the true flavor. Defining a religion by just one of its flavors is misguided and wrong.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Judging a group of people by one of its members is wrong, it's the same form of prejudice.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

In order to prove this you would need a huge sample poll from each religion and it would need to be representative of the size of each flavor. Then and only then could you begin to make that kind of generalized statement.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Then why make the claim as if it were fact?

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

You've been spending too much time around conservatives.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Well you're definitely slinging a bunch of bullshit around without any proof so why not just STFU? When you are getting massive downvotes for your incorrect claims you double-down and start calling names?! This is a clear sign of somebody who isn't worth listening to or their ideas/opinions worth regarding.

Jumping from one proprietary system to another isn't really an improvement.

I didn't realize it was possible to host your own backend locally... I thought it was just hosting the webUI locally.

Ventrillo and Teamspeak as well

According to that chart GenX is still a problem and they'll be around for a while. The thing that gets me worried is the huge number of "Independents" in Millennials and GenZ. How many of those are Liberal Independents and how many of those are Conservative Independents? I wish there was a followup question whenever people where given the option of Independent.

Look at the fucking link!

This is why we take the "peaceful protest" straight to the supreme Court where the real seat of conservative political power lies.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

I think it's the judges who should be worried about "running out of time"

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Let me spell it out for you - January 6th the supreme Court but actually get it done.

Neat visuals but I don't think this is in any way accurate... Tell me how I crossed all those lightyears in about 60 seconds while only traveling at around 95% the speed of light.

The main feature i would like to see on Lemmy

Im pretty satisfied with Lemmy, but one thing i wish you could do is browse instances. Like i wish there was a way i could almost emulate being on my programming.dev account and see all that instances communities while im logged into this account. Afaik theres no easy way to do that without visiting some aggregator website. It...

Some of the alternative web-UIs let you do that. Photon for sure and I think Alexandrite as well.

Good luck. Brits, for some reason, believe that microwaving your tea water is somehow blasphemous. I mean, it's not like you put the tea in the kettle when you boil water just the same as you don't put tea in the microwave while boiling the water. I guess the US doesn't have a monopoly on idiots.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

I don't know how many things you've made in a microwave but most people know you have to let it sit for a minute after the microwave goes off for even heat distribution (or if you dont want to wait the full minute - give it a stir and zap it for another 20 seconds). The article you linked stated that microwaving is different because the hot water rises to the top and won't sink back to the bottom, duh! - that's how hot water works in a gravitational field.

I'm not religious anymore but I still think that was a really cool science fiction series.

Sublinks Aims to Be a Drop-In Replacement for Lemmy ( wedistribute.org )

Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy's Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps of...

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Forget the backend! I just want the frontend not to crap itself whenever it can't fetch the site icon!

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Yeah, I run Photon on base domain because I couldn't count on lemmy-ui.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

That's good news. Hopefully they'll get let you change your avatar in that new UI because that's one of the weirdly missing Photon features.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Id say that the obvious answer is the Linux community with the most members. !linux has more than double the number of subscribers of the next most active Linux community.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

You don't need an account on lemmy.ml to subscribe to any community there. For example, I run my own self-hosted instance and none of the communities I'm subscribed to are from my own instance.

Spoken like somebody who knows nothing about what they are saying.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

If you don't insert politics into normal conversations and you value relationships more than you value being right (left) then this should not be an issue.

Stay away from the political communities and don't feel like you need to correct people when they spout out political bullshit.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Then keep it in the politics and news communities, and don't be surprised when you are kicked. You don't go protesting at the KKK meeting expecting to change minds just like you don't try to go to !politics expecting to change minds.
If you are looking for real discussion then don't go to a community that is hostile to the discussion you want to have.

How a 27-Year-Old Codebreaker Busted the Myth of Bitcoin’s Anonymity ( www.wired.com )

"This is the story of the revelation in late 2013 that Bitcoin was, in fact, the opposite of untraceable—that its blockchain would actually allow researchers, tech companies, and law enforcement to trace and identify users with even more transparency than the existing financial system."

Why he is even allowed work in government/politics after the Nixon incident is a huge mystery to me.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

I wanted to comment on the title of the article and the fact that it is gramatically incorrect. Why didn't they use the word "invites"? The article uses the word in the first sentence. It's hard for me to enjoy journalism when it's filled with distracting mistakes like this. When your profession is writing why are these kind of mistakes allowed. If I made mistakes analogous to this in my career I would not be keeping my job very long.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

I'll give you the second exception but I've never seen the first one used. However, you are missing the fact that in both of your examples you can use the subject as an action. To lunch is to eat lunch and to prom is the shorted version of promenade.
White House is a proper noun and cannot be used the same way as your two examples.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

Not to make light of this story - I thought I was clicking on a story about somebody with three arms. Its too early.

stown ,
@stown@sedd.it avatar

It's my opinion that this kind of reporting is equivalent to soft / tabloid news that just feeds peoples carnal appetites. I wanted to post my original comment to gauge what others feel about this.
