Eh. I play games and stuff. I'm a web developer. I have a woodshop I spend far too little time in. (he/him)

This morning, as I was laying on the couch watching my son draw, I was reading a review of an adventure by Bryce Lynch. While criticizing florid prose, he wrote "Adventure writing is technical writing and has a different set of rules for how to present information." I'm inclined to agree with this statement, even though I've never really thought about it in those terms. Thoughts?

smitty ,

@Tim_Eagon Mostly agree. I don’t think it’s exactly technical writing but I think it’s closer to that than it is to narrative our creative writing.

Trump is upset he may miss his son's graduation because he's on trial.

Yeah, we do treat people in the criminal justice system harshly. People you have never thought about, people who have kids, and graduations, and moments missed forever.

But it's different now. He cries. It's happening to ME. To Me!

Nothing, no one, exists beyond the tip of some people's noses. They cannot see pain unless they feel it. Cannot recognize suffering unless it's their own.

What a stunted perspective.

smitty ,

@futurebird You’re giving him too much credit. Every day he manages to delay brings him closer to enough people buying the argument that we can’t prosecute a presidential candidate that close to an election.

(But otherwise yes, agree: more empathy needs to be extended to people trapped in the justice system.)

As far as YouTubers go, I regularly watch @dmtales, Questing Beast, and Lexi from the Gaming Table. What others should I check out? Those engaging in clickbait and/or controversy for controversy sake need not apply.

smitty ,

@Tim_Eagon @dmtales Corkboards & Curiosities is a pretty new channel but her content’s been very good so far. Zee Bashew for mostly short hits with great animation.

Wait, the extant Tesla models are S, 3, X, and Y? SEXY? Seriously?

smitty ,

@Tim_Eagon And the only reason it’s Model 3 instead of Model E is because Ford still owns the trademark on that.

I have apparently saved every single RPG character I’ve ever played… except the one I played in the campaign that lasted from late grade school into college.

@robindlaws If bezoars can come back around, then surely there’s hope yet for Beanie Babies…

It's interesting, at least to me, to read the contrasting attitudes towards crowdfunding in the space (trends negative) versus the space (trends positive).

    smitty ,

@Tim_Eagon @CatDad Miniature bloat too. Take a $40 game, add a bunch of expensive plastic, sell it for $125. RPGs don’t do that, as a general rule. They also tend to be much better about offering “un-deluxe” versions. If board games habitually offered a plastic tier and, say, a cardboard standee tier there’d be a lot less complaining (although probably fewer multi-million kickstarters).

    smitty ,

@Tim_Eagon @CatDad Yeah, PDFs are part of that “undeluxe” tier that RPGs do much better. Although, in fairness, most board games couldn’t really offer a PDF-only version.

(Yes, ghost of what Cheapass Games used to be lurking in the corner, I see you. Hello! We miss you.)

    smitty ,

@thoughtpunks @Tim_Eagon @CatDad Perhaps a slight tangent, but I wonder how many RPG publishers have shareholders (aside from the obvious one). Because this strikes me very much as the kind of thing shareholders salivate over, and I suspect many more board game publishers than RPG publishers are publicly traded.

    smitty ,

@thoughtpunks @Tim_Eagon @CatDad Sure. Love an expansion that lets me squeeze more life out of a game I love. But an expansion that’s required for me to love the game in the first place is just a hidden fee.

    smitty ,

@thoughtpunks @Tim_Eagon @CatDad As long as they can still make the core game satisfying, it’s not necessarily a terrible strategy. But it’s a bit like serially publishing a novel: each chapter has to be a fulfilling narrative experience on its own, and that’s trickier than it sounds.

    smitty ,

@Tim_Eagon @thoughtpunks @CatDad Hasbro’s also in the board game space (although they have their own crowdfunding platform) and CMON—one of the worst offenders on Kickstarter—is also publicly traded (just looked).

    smitty ,

@Tim_Eagon @thoughtpunks @CatDad I think only on the Hong Kong exchange, but that’s enough to have shareholders pulling strings.

I look forward to the day when I can aggregate Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads into one client. Anyone know of a way to do this yet?

    smitty ,

@slyflourish Not quite yet but Icon Factory is working on it. They have a project called Tapestry that’ll do that and a bit more (I recall it including RSS as well, at the least).
