Hello people who recreationally browse academic papers, I need some help

I would like to find studies, of any quality, that either confirm or disprove the claim often made by doctors that “using a [mobility device] makes you sicker”

(where [mobility device] is usually a wheelchair, but this is also often said about a cane, rollator, what have you.)

Doctors often argue this to discourage patients from using any sort of mobility device, claiming it deconditions you and if you start using a wheelchair to get to places that you cannot get to without a wheelchair you will end up being stuck in bed.

This makes absolutely no sense, and I’m fairly certain it’s usually mixing up cause and effect. (Because, you know, people currently in the process of getting sicker will start to use mobility devices but will continue getting sicker.)

I’m not great at knowing what keywords to use to find relevant studies and so far I have found 0. I mean I wouldn’t be surprised if there were 0 because the entire claim makes no sense from the start. But maybe there’s something that I could have my fun picking apart but I’m just too incompetent to find it?

hello people who use linux but don’t really care for the technical details, today is a wonderful day to do some updates. (no, really, do them. asap 😬)

so you remember Neuralink, the brain implant that we can't really call experimental because there doesn't seem to have been any sort of, like, science going on? with the lab that was investigated for animal cruelty?

@ireneista hahaha 200 times compression? in real time, on low power? i am not a computer scientist but looks at every file i have ever compressed no

some of you need to learn the difference between “a yacht” and “a sailing yacht”. i thought environmentally friendly hobbies and modes of transportation is something we wanted people to have. but suddenly you’re all gleeful about people ending up in a very dangerous situation because their sailboat got sunk 😒

skye OP ,
@skye@toot.cat avatar

for the more visual people among you.

first image: the type of boat you think about when you read “yacht”. very expensive, exceedingly wasteful and dirty, a menace for marine creatures big and small, and incidentally also completely unaffected by medium sized whales

second image: the type of boat that these orcas like to sink. also happens to embody the most environmentally friendly way to travel on the ocean

hope this clears up some of the confusion because it’s starting to get on my nerves

a sailing yacht that is basically just a little wedge of a boat with an enormous sail, clearly a contraption intended for sports.

twitter used to be like: aww, i put all this work into this post and it only received 230 retweets, i don’t know why i bother

fedi is like: oh no, this post received 36 boosts, people in my real life will probably end up talking to me about it, i am scared

@BeAware it’s really different when the social media you use is full of real people that are relevant to your life lol

i hate that german wikipedia has a different layout than english wikipedia

skye OP ,
@skye@toot.cat avatar

german wikipedia: good, practical, looks the way that wikipedia has always looked, i know what to do here, yes this is wikipedia

english wikipedia: ugly, too much whitespace, i always have to search for where the index went because it’s in the space that i have learned to ignore because that’s where 99% of websites place only ads and sponsored content

but then i train myself to use the layout from english wikipedia and then i end up on german wikipedia again and then i am AGAIN having to figure out where the index went

skye OP ,
@skye@toot.cat avatar

the way that the internet has trained me to ignore ads and sponsored content is impacting my ability to parse legitimate content on honest websites a lot, actually.

like for example, a lot of wikis place important tips in a little highlighted box.

little highlighted boxes is something i specifically ignore, because that’s an ad.

earlier today i ended up on a blog. i could not find the content. the top bar had categories. i clicked on the category i wanted. a descriptive text was all i could see. i could not find any links to entries in the category.

because my brain completely refused to interpret the big fucking fat boxes with pictures on both sides of the descriptive text as relevant information. that’s where ads and clickbait go.

i feel like the people who design honest, non-exploitative websites should take these kinds of problems into consideration more strongly

fedi must look wild today for the people who aren’t Into Computers

skye OP ,
@skye@toot.cat avatar

for those of you who are like “what the hell are the computer people going on about today”:

a small package that is widely used, including by the linux kernel itself, got a backdoor put in that would allow any interested parties access to affected systems. this backdoor was added by the maintainer of the package who took over from the overwhelmed previous maintainer. the backdoor that we know about is restricted in what systems it can affect and it did not make its way into stable releases. your ubuntu laptop is fine.

but if this had gone undetected and they had added additional functionality, basically every linux system everywhere might have been made vulnerable (this includes all android phones, most routers, many vacuum cleaners, all kinds of servers and internet infrastructure, and more).

it probably has not gotten that far (TBD, but it’s looking like it got caught early enough) but everyone is adequately terrified because it got discovered completely by accident.

It's kinda depressing how tumblr is imploding now and I'm seeing half my follow list go "man, after seeing both twitter and tumblr do this, it's really showing how it's a bad idea for a social media network to be run by a company who can make arbitrary changes without user consent.

anyway, here's my bsky: ..."

skye ,
@skye@toot.cat avatar

@hosford42 @zanagb @iykury @foone @mcc this is mostly a legal problem. lolicon is not illegal in japan but very much so in europe, and federating with a server usually means copying some of their data onto yours - so you effectively end up hosting illegal content if you federate with japanese servers, unless these servers explicitly ban and actively moderate against content that is legal in their country. so, the traditional solution for fedi servers from the us and europe is to defederate from all of japan

skye ,
@skye@toot.cat avatar

@hosford42 @zanagb @iykury @foone @mcc if it was about the moral issue, then blocking single users would be a feasible solution in some cases. but it’s not. it’s about admins not wanting to go to jail on csam charges. hence the drastic action being pretty much universally implemented by fedi servers in western countries.
