I would really recommend watching Miracle Workers, it's an anthology series where every season is a different short story, but with the same actors.

He is INCREDIBLE in it and I think should have won an Emmy for his role(s).

Don't worry, it wasn't mean! I haven't used IPA since probably secondary school where we had mayyybe three lessons on it, so it was bound to be off.

Not only that, according to the wikipedia article OP linked:

"The boogaloo movement has created logos and other imagery incorporating [igloo] snow huts and Hawaiian prints based on these derivations."

If white supremacy was so "supreme", why are these morons using Indigenous-based iconography for their movement I wonder. They'll claim it's to "fly under the radar", but that just makes them look even more smooth brained.

Naaah dude, don't let them claim Hawaiian shirts, keep wearing them and being radical

I'm back home visiting Canada right now, and seeing this too. Children of immigrants/2nd gen immigrants using the same talking points as fascists about how there's too many immigrants being let in, or not "the right kind".

Astounding how they don't understand the cognitive dissonance of that.

sigmaklimgrindset OP ,
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

Well, they technically will see SOME cents of this because I'm pretty sure Nvidia gives employees stocks too.

But yeah, I also posted this because it's a clear illustration of how most salaries will never reflect the value your labour brings to an organization.

sigmaklimgrindset OP ,
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

Brilliant, thanks for this!

I said in a comment on mastodon that I don't think the batch of newer employees hired at Nvidia are going to have anywhere near the same compensation as the current employees do, and this kind of helps support my suspicions...

Which could lead to a morale problem in the company too (speaking from experience)

sigmaklimgrindset OP ,
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

I don’t think many people would claim overall valuation has much of anything to do with the value labor brings to an organization.

Apologies, can you clarify what exactly you mean by this? Because when I say their labour is not being valued, I do extend that to the Wall Street orgs that are doing the evaluations. They look at the "product" on offer, not the people actually working and developing it.

Are you saying because stock prices aren't steady, we can't correlate that to salaries?

If one of the best speculative fiction authors to live only needs 5 hours of work a day to create The Left Hand of Darkness and the Earthsea series, then maybe it's something worth exploring.

Most of us work 8 hours a day and probably produce nothing "valuable" except shareholder profits so...

@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

Personally, I wouldn't start with Wizard of Earthsea, that book was published in 1968 and definitely has the prose and flow modern readers are not as used to, especially for the fantasy genre.

I read Left Hand of Darkness for school, but it was The Dispossessed plus her non-fiction essays that got me into her. Omelas is also a good short story starting point, and I think it's only 20 pages.

sigmaklimgrindset , (edited )
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

The Ones Who Left for Walk Away From Omelas. A 19-20 page short story about what a "utopia" truly is. (Yes, yes, "we live in an society")

Her non-fiction essays on writing, and reflecting on her body of work are also very good. She was an incredibly forward thinking writer, and one of my favourite authors of all time.

sigmaklimgrindset ,
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

Omg not pedantic AT ALL, you're right! Embarrassing mistake, thank you for the correction!

sigmaklimgrindset ,
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

Oh the story itself is very accessible, I agree, and foundational for a lot of "magician's journey"-type storytelling we see today. The issue is that the writing itself is very...not dry per se... but definitely almost academic. It's closer to Tolkien's Two Towers than any of the Song of Ice and Fire series, to make a basic comparison.

Even reading the first chapter of Wizards, you see a lot of exposition and sentence structures that aren't as popular in modern writing today. For example, we have the author talk to us (the reader) directly, instead of through Sparrowhawk. That really isn't used anymore nowadays unless for comedic effect. Sparrowhawk himself is also kind of distant to us readers. We're reading his journey as a tale, but we're not necessarily experiencing it with him, if that makes sense.

If you're used to reading older sci-fi/fantasy, you'll be fine with most of this. If you've grown up in the Harry Potter/Percy Jackson/Song of Ice and Fire/ era, this will be incredibly jarring. I would actually say that Tombs of Atuan (the second book) is a better entry point to the series for these readers.

None of this means Wizards is badly written by the way. It is intentionally written like a "modern" (1960s) saga akin to the Poetic Edda, and it works extremely well in that sense. For me personally, the Earthsea Cycle is probably my favourite fantasy series of all time, and nothing (sorry Tolkienites, not even LotR) comes close to the experience I had reading for the first time. But I can't recommend Wizards of Earthsea as the entry point to le Guin without asking whether or not you read the Silmarillion by yourself front to back of your own volition, lol.

sigmaklimgrindset ,
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

LOL

Don't worry, I actually originally started with Atuan first (just what my grandma had on the shelf), and then went back to the first book. I still had that moment like a chapter into Wizards.

I mean she started it, it's a response from another Congresswoman after MTG attacked AOC's appearance.

Thanks for the clarification, I only saw an abridged clip of MTG's original comment and AOC looking frustrated, so I thought the comments were towards her and not Crockett.

State Department official resigns after Biden administration says Israel not blocking Gaza aid ( www.middleeasteye.net )

A career State Department official resigned from her post on Tuesday, saying she could no longer work for the Biden administration after it released a report concluding that Israel was not preventing the flow of aid to Gaza....

The Democrat's strategy to appeal to their base really seems to be, "Look, we're not as bad at the other guys." And they really aren't realizing that that isn't enough, because it's not just about Israel/Palestine anymore. I really don't think the people who are also repeating this party line (including the ones on Lemmy) are realizing how out of touch this sentiment is especially the younger Millennials/Gen Z.

I've seen my friends get attacked, arrested, and get criminal records from the university encampments and protests, and nothing was done to protect them. In their eyes, Trump would never protect them, but neither did Biden or any other Democrat in power. How can they be trusted to protect the people in the future? Seen from this lens, I don't think it's unreasonable to think that there might be people out there who find voting for Biden unpalatable.

sigmaklimgrindset ,
@sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz avatar

Nah "there's no girls on the internet" jokes in 2023 (or current year) are kind of cringe, and the only people I hear say jokes like that (even ironically) are in their 40s. Lemmy skews older, so I can see why we'd find that funny.

If we're going to be pedantic, it's "at LAN parties".

And our experiences are very different. I went to a lot of LANs in the 2000s with my parents where there were many women participants. Not quite 50/50, but a sizeable percentage. 0% women at a LAN sounds like a culture issue to me.

This is why I report the job postings to the website posted, and to my country's department of labour. I know it seems futile, but I'm petty and I have time.

Turns out, it's actually helpful, I had someone reach out to me saying they were investigating a certain company, and if I had any more information about the screenshot I sent them a year ago.

"Dehomed" is such a better term than "homeless" or "unhoused". First term I've heard that doesn't put the blame on the person without a home.

Even "unhoused" is too neutral of a term for how people often end up without secure shelter.

There's a Tiktok account (yes, boo hiss tomato, etc) that makes AI generated music, and the country songs are indistinguishable from actual country songs on the radio until you listen to the lyrics.

There was one where the lyrics were something like "thinking about corn/gun up my butt" that I still think about...

I mean they're trying to ban it because they don't want American social media data in China's or hostile 3rd party hands.

The hypocrisy comes from the fact that they won't regulate the Silicon Valley social media companies the same way. Cambridge Analytica (now Emerdata) wasn't Chinese, they were British. The fact that tech giants like Meta are looking to buy Tiktok in order to stop the ban should also be something to raise eyebrows at.

I'm not for or against Tiktok, btw, I see it as a tool for study. From a professional standpoint, it's algorithm is fascinating, especially as so much other social media is getting more and more enshitified. And a lot of people who don't use it don't realize how tailored it can based on their usage. Scary stuff, but also shows an effective use of user data compared to other sites like Instagram or YouTube's algorithms.

Thank you, I just read the Wikipedia summary of the event, and I can't believe this isn't even as big as the "Big One" everyone talks about for Yellowstone.

Haha, yea, I wasn't born in the right decade on the right continent to know about this, so I had a really good time learning about something new!

The only reason I even know about the Yellowstone caldera eruption zone is because my American cousin once told me about it in the form of a horror story when we were both younger, and I started crying because I thought the world was going to end while we were visiting Connecticut, lol.
