Some people really tend to focus on times when violent revolution didnā€™t work out so well, but most of us, including myself, really tend to overlook all the (ongoing) times when nonviolent, nonrevolutionary political activity failed to get the necessary goods. This is a subtoot

Tired of living in a world with too much construction noise after hours, where the only people you can call about after hours construction noise are the police, who even if I wasnā€™t ideologically opposed to calling, I wouldnā€™t call anyway because they wouldnā€™t do anything. Then as soon as the construction noise ended the fireworks started? Itā€™s not even close to July 4th yet. Fuck you all.

People should be allowed to make posts that only some people can reply to

All other social media that I know of does this, this is just as important as properly working content warnings IMO. Totally bonkers that not only is this not basic functionality, apparently a bunch of people donā€™t even want users to have control over who interacts with them. Why not? That seems extremely on brand

To this day, Mexico honors Ricardo Flores Magon, and his brothers, who led the anarchist revolution in, and occupation of, Tijuana and other northern Baja California towns in 1911, during the early days of the Mexican Revolution.

Berlin has a Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in the Mitte neighborhood. I spoke at a radio station there, about Food Not Bombs, back in the early 1990s. Germany has at least one street named after Emma Goldman.

There is a Kropotkinskaya metro station in Moscow & Mount Kropotkin in Antarctica. There are still numerous schools around the world named for Spanish anarchist educator Francisco Ferrer. And numerous places have streets or squares named after Karl Marx.

But where are the revolutionary street and place names in the U.S.? Emma Goldman and Ricardo Flores Magon both spent considerable portions of their lives in the U.S., including time in U.S. prisons (Magon died in Leavenworth). Joe Hill's music lives on, was performed by Pete Seeger, Utah Philips, and Paul Robeson, was executed by the state on trumped up charges. Where are the Joe Hill streets? How about Albert Parsons, falsely convicted and executed for the Haymarket bombing, or his wife Lucy, radical organizer and cofounder of the IWW? How about street names or parks named for Cherokee radical and IWW organizer Frank Little, lynched by vigilantes? Or African-American IWW organizer Ben Fletcher?

The closest thing that comes readily to my mind is a short stretch of 9th St., in Oakland, renamed Huey P Newton Street, in 2021. Or Malcolm X school in Berkeley.

If you know of other examples of street or place names in the U.S. named for radicals or revolutionaries, please share photos.

@MikeDunnAuthor Malcolm X, not Dr. King. DC has a street named after him too.

However your overall point is definitely correct, there are very few places named after left wing figures anywhere in this country.

(Chavez and Dr. King are "radical" enough for me but I don't really care to split hairs about definitions šŸ˜…)

On Mayday 2012 some people smashed some bank windows in downtown Seattle.

The Obama admin called a grand jury and within six months several of my friends and classmates were in solitary confinement in prison.

The fact that the Biden admin didn't react to J6 like this indicates to me that the Democrats care a lot more about people smashing bank windows on Mayday than they do about things like J6.

The US justice system simply does not have to be this slow or anemic. This is a choice.

    "In the factory the worker's desire to organize production can only be expressed in opposition to things as they are, in resistance to company domination. But if you have helped a friend build his house or repair his car you know the release of freely associated labor. Whether your skill is small or great, whether you can do the wiring or can only carry cement blocks, you feel a part of something. There is a holiday spirit when you go out to the lot on a Sunday. Lots of talk, friendly joshing, a picnic lunch. But everyone takes part in the planning and carrying out of the work. Everyone gives the best that is in him and feels better for it. You may have a charley-horse when you go back into the shop on Monday -- but it's like going back into a prison after a taste of freedom." -- Martin Glaberman, "Punching Out"

    sidereal OP ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    "Not only were relations between the workers and the corporations changed in the great CIO strikes, but the men themselves were changed. Talking to sit-downers, you learn of the tremendous discoveries they made of the powers they had that they didn't know about before, powers that were released when they were released from the immediate domination of the machine. Men who were unable to talk in the presence of more than a couple of people spoke to hundreds and thousands with ability and confidence. Men found they had organizing ability, or could do office work, or direct a military operation. Only in free cooperative effort with their fellow men could their own powers and abilities be released and developed. It changed their relations with their families, their outlook on life, the very nature of their being. They felt, at least for a while, what it was like to be a whole man not just one part that was needed to tend a machine. Countless numbers of women achieved a new measure of equality in the home and in the factory--not from a contract clause--but from participation as equals in a collective struggle."

    I can't remember exactly but I think the guy who just died in Iran was the person that the PDX police tried to claim (in the blue leaks) that the PDX IWW had a picture of up in their union hall

    (goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway, the PDX IWW union hall did not have any photos of Iranian politicians, so really the fact that they claimed they saw one is just further evidence they never actually went inside the hall)

    Before Biden was elected people were like: "Look, he's not perfect, but he's better than Trump. Just vote for him and criticize him from the left."

    And then every single time I have criticized Biden this entire time, the same people are like "What so you want Trump to win?"

    I'm criticizing Biden [explicitly because] I don't want Trump to win, actually, and it seems like Biden is hellbent on pursuing policies that are going to alienate most people and deliver a Trump victory.

    This November I will vote for Biden.

    I would regard not voting for Biden, particularly in: PA, OH, MI, WI, IN, IL,VA, GA, FL, AZ, ME, NC, NH, etc. as a huge error. I'd be disappointed to find out anyone I knew didn't vote. It's one of a long list of things we need to do. We can't skip it.

    @futurebird @biplanepilot Iā€™ve absolutely lost faith in local races. Local Dā€™s are okay but often when they try to do cool stuff, the federal party cuts them off (this is why Sanders, one of the only Dā€™s I consistently like, has run as an independent many times). Local 3rd parties donā€™t get anything done. And local Rā€™s simply donā€™t get elected around here.

    Most teenagers understand that things actually need to be changed. Most adults just come out with embarrassing shit like ā€œwell we have to be realisticā€ because their spirits have been broken by work.

    One thing you can learn from ants is that water and waste management are a top priority. Ants react to changes in water faster and more aggressively than food, or enemy ants, or any other problem.

    They are constantly moving substrate to manipulate the humidity level of their nest. They are highly sensitive to sudden influxes of water, and yet able to adapt to them better than some human towns.

    They are also prepared for water shortages.

    Likewise trash management and recycling are key.

    sidereal ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    @futurebird I feel like humans have a lot to learn from ants & bees about how to build & operate cities. Like. A [lot]. Honeybees will address humidity by flapping their wings inside the hive to create a "ventilation" system and move fresh air in.

    sidereal OP ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    Trucks are good, actually. Yes, most are too big. Yes, most people don't need them. Yes, many people buy them as stupid status symbols. Yes, they are probably too dangerous to be allowed to drive in residential neighborhoods as much as they are.

    But they are also not pointless! Vans are better for many contractors, but trucks are nice for messy tasks. Hauling dirt, manure, and yard waste is nicer when it's outside, and you can clean it out easier than a van, too.

    @CedarTea 100%. I'm extremely critical of cars myself, and I get that a lot of people are saying "ban cars" to try and just move the Overton Window but I'm like can we actually [not] strand rural people with mobility issues? Not make it harder for urban people to go for a hike in the mountains? Not make it harder for rural organizers to drive around and actually organize rural people?

    I would love it if I could take my car on the train like a land-ferry but that's not very sexy either!

    sidereal OP ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    @CedarTea Right and like I'm even down to talk about going back to horses! I'm lowkey obsessed with the old streetcars systems where a horse would pull it uphill and then get onboard for the gravity ride back downhill. But then it's like, well, the environmental impact of growing all of that horsefeed would probably be higher than making small amounts of biodiesel. And someone has to do something about all the droppings.

    sidereal OP ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    @inquiline @CedarTea Yeah no this current crop of recent huge trucks in the last five-ten years is definitely an abomination of lax regulation & induced demand

    Like there have always been big trucks like F350's but now those seem to be the only options.

    The whole thing is darkly ironic because I might actually buy a new truck for work if any of these companies made a new truck I wanted to buy. Even as a truck apologist, the American truck market has nothing for me.

    sidereal OP ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    @inquiline @CedarTea Ahahahaha I've already seen a couple Incel Caminos driving around Seattle. I agree that it's really bad.

    I would way rather live somewhere with good trains and never need a car. Sadly, Seattle is pretty far from there. So I'm willing to get an EV or something as a stopgap in the meantime. But then I don't even want any of these cars! All too big, all of them have these ridiculous luxury features I don't want, and none of them are fun to drive.

    sidereal OP ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    @inquiline @CedarTea And then they're like "omg we can't import any of these cars that people want from China because then all the domestic car factories will go out of business." Like my brother in industrial capitalism, this seems like a solvable problem. Make small cars in America holy crap

    Every now and then I hear conversations from outside of here about "the state of social media" and let me tell you: People are suffering. People are miserable. Many people feel addicted to social media but unable to have positive and valuable interactions in the space. Mostly, in the profit-driven social media space negative emotional reactions glue eyeballs as well as positive, so a heap of the experiences is just ... unpleasant.

    Meanwhile around here things are different.

    @fixiemama @futurebird IDK, it took me awhile to realize that it was ADHD. For a long time I just didn't understand why everyone else could tolerate these ads that were totally ruining my immersion in... everything? Then I realized it has to do with differences in task switching.

    I have all of my web browsers set to not autoplay videos and gifs, and look for "reduced motion" in all device and app settings. This cuts down on a lot of ads even without using ublock or a pihole (which I recommend)

    sidereal ,
    @sidereal@kolektiva.social avatar

    @fixiemama @futurebird I just wish my state would get on banning billboards like Maine and Vermont have. Also removing ads from public transit would be nice, they really don't even make that much money anyway.

    I basically view ads as a form of hostile enemy propaganda and will go to unusual extremes to avoid them. The ruling class wants individuals to think they're weak & stay divided, and advertising is a major way that's accomplished. PR is just the new term for propaganda.
