Curious. I always imagined it was a reference to the folklore create 'Imp'.

sanzky ,

Even if it's a nice solution the licensing issue, they are still deceiving their users. I don't think I have seen anything like them but they should be clear that they are bluetooth.

sanzky ,

some contributor agreement does force people to surrender their copyright. MongoDB is probably the most infamous example.

sanzky ,

Same goes for words in foreign languages. it just causes confusion. I like how eclipse went for “temurin” (anagram for runtime) for their OpenJDK distribution. no way to cause confusion.

this guy is 100% committed to give nazis a platform, right?

I enjoyed reading this a lot. thanks for sharing

their veto to recognize them at the UN was also a pretty big clue.

U.S. Sues Apple, Accusing It of Maintaining an iPhone Monopoly ( www.nytimes.com )

The department joined 16 states and the District of Columbia to file a significant challenge to the reach and influence of Apple, arguing in an 88-page lawsuit that the company had violated antitrust laws with practices that were intended to keep customers reliant on their iPhones and less likely to switch to a competing device....

Jason Snell made a good overview of what the suit focuses on. I think it makes the case easier to understand

does this apply only to the internet?
e.g. are you against laws that prevent stores from selling tobacco to minors because it's their parents responsibility that they don't smoke?

Im not saying Texas' solution is a good idea, but also I feel it is at least weird this contradictory situation between the physical world and the internet

I feel this has been worse since von der Leyen stepped in. But maybe I just feel that way because she is in the spotlight way more than Juncker ever was.

Apple will require notarization for apps from third party app stores, and will disable updates for apps installed via third party app stores if staying outside EU ( support.apple.com )

As far as I can tell this basically means that all apps must be approved by Apple to follow their "platform policies for security and privacy" even if publishing on a third party app store. They will also disable updating apps from third party app stores if you stay outside the EU for too long (even if you are a citizen of an EU...

they were just fined with 1.8B because of their anti steering practices. so clearly they don’t always comply

sanzky ,

minidisc is the right answer, but the world collectively said no to it.

sanzky ,

actually, it doesn’t. It is now just “HP inc.” Sole years ago they split the company into HP inc and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
HP kept the PC and printing business and Hewlett Packard kept the enterprise business.

(but I get you. I just wanted to share that detail )

sanzky ,

this is incredible common. in software offerings, an enterprise account per user can be twice or more the price of an “individual one”.
eg. an individual intelliJ license is 200€ for the first year and 600€ for the enterprise one

iMessages is like a footnote here. I was surprised it was even considered.

sanzky ,

they wanted to be irrelevant in the European market for chat applications?

sanzky ,

Imagine if 99% of text messages sent were via iMessage, and the EU kept the same ruling.

If 99% of messages were sent via iMessage the ruling would have been different. if it ever fulfils the criteria needed to be considered gatekeepers, then they will be designed as such.

sanzky ,

Im not sure you understands how this work. but anyway... they can do whatever with their service. I (or any person I know) dont plan to use it 🤷

A very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. It was in the top of a shelf and it fell on my head while trying to reach for something else. It really did surprised me.

sanzky ,

Im sorry but this is not correct.
Most design decisions are a trade-off, you gain something but you loose something. You might argue that reparability should have a higher priority than size, but saying that you can be more repairable without gaining any size is nonsense.

sanzky ,

it is also true that devices that are packaged as an integrated unit are less likely to experience issues. Reparability is a means toward an end (long lasting products) but not the only one way to achieve it.

sanzky ,

Im not sure. you dont want to use anything that might disconnect easily. The battery pack does have an additional USB-C plug to 'daisy chain' it to other power source.

What’s stopping AI companies from paying royalties to artists they ripped off?

profit. AI is not even a profitable business now. They exist because of the huge amount of investment being poured into it. If they have to pay their fair share they would not exist as a business.

what OpenAI says is actually true. The issue IMHO is the idea that we should give them a pass to do it.

sanzky ,

The status of Apple as gatekeeper in the messaging app ecosystem is not yet clear. Remember that iMessages is not really popular in Europe, and Europe wont name Apple as a gatekeeper because of imessage's popularity in the U.S.
The EU does seem to be inclined to define them as gatekeeper, but that is not yet final. and if Apple implements RCS that might get them out of the hook.
