More white women voted for Trump than Clinton in 2016.

More white women voted for Trump than Biden in 2020. In fact, Trump's margin of victory with white women, grew.🤷🏿‍♂️

More young white people (18 to 29) voted for Trump than Clinton in 2016.

More young white people voted for Trump than Biden in 2020. In fact, Trump's margin of victory with young white people grew.🤷🏿‍♂️

But you don't see people cursing out white women online and then blocking them, like they do to Black men.

You know why.

    @epidiah I love it :)

    I love the 1984 movie, and can totally see fitting these things together.

    And I can half remember other profound or intriguing narratives came up from mistaken some stories or ideas as a kid.

    Like where when you find at later your reaction is, that the mistaken narrative is cooler :)

    For those who are bitching about President Biden and saying the Gaza situation will cost him the election, WTF do you propose?! Third party has ZERO chance! Have you learned anything from 2016?!?!?! The Orange shit stain suggests that Netanayu "finish the job!". How dare anyone say they or both sides are the same. If that's your belief, unfollow me now!!!

    @otownKim @ThatMan This is what I perceive as the divide between liberals and progressives.

    Progressives have already accepted to some extent that we are more fucked than liberals think we are.

    Another term of Biden isn't changing course.

    CAVEAT FOR THE 8TH MILLION TIME:
    SAYING THIS DOESN'T MEAN I WOULDN'T VOTE FOR BIDEN IF IT MATTERED.

    SO many of these arguments reduce to liberals focusing on the latter and ignoring the context of protest or questioning.
    Which is the "democratic" thing.

    Today in Labor History May 2, 1980: The South African government banned "Another Brick in the Wall," by Pink Floyd. They did this because striking black teachers and students sang it in their protests against inferior, segregated education. The Apartheid government called the song "prejudicial to the safety of the state." And Apartheid was not prejudicial? https://youtu.be/HrxX9TBj2zY

    Today in labor history April 29, 1895: The U.S. sent warships to Nicaragua to "protect" US interests. This was the first of many military interventions in that country. President Taft ordered the overthrow of President Zelaya in 1909. The U.S. later invaded in 1910 and occupied the country in 1912. However, the original Sandinistas defeated that occupation in 1933. But Sandino’s victory was short-lived because Anastasio Somoza assassinated him in 1934. Somoza brutally ruled Nicaragua for the next forty years, until the new Sandinistas overthrew him in 1979. And then, again, the U.S. intervened. This time, by funding the right-wing Contras. Later, when Congress blocked aid to the Contras, Reagan secretly funded them with illegal arms shipments to Iran.

    @JoscelynTransient @MikeDunnAuthor And another point ...
    Our ongoing and systematic "interference" in middle and south america gives us ZERO ground to stand on complaining about immigration. Specifically across the Mexican border.

    Inversely, it's almost as if we (the US) are obligated to assist humans fleeing from the discord we sowed.

    Is the Atlantic Ocean circulation approaching a tipping point? This lecture video is my take after researching this topic for over 30 years, and receiving the Alfred Wegener Medal of the European Geosciences Union for my scientific achievements last week. @rahmstorf I'm still watching it, but it already has answered my questions about what happens to the Northeast US. The AMOC cools it so a lesser AMOC (or no AMOC?) will generally warm it.

    The video says for one reason because the Gulf Stream will move closer to the coast which is a warming influence.

    (I hope I said that right.)

    @MikeDunnAuthor This makes me think of my typical (less so now) work cultures where the person working 50+ hours a week is exalted.

    And me knowing that a well slept worker, will outperform that person, just with less fanfare.

    Eventually a big chunk of the "50+ hours" is spent fixing all the bad stuff you did in the last "50+ hours".

    Does this happen to you?

    I was advised to never ever use childcare responsibilities as a justification for unavailability, e.g. when rejecting meetings at late hours. Well, because, someone could think that I am not serious about science or that my kids are more important to me than my science, or something like this 🙄

    But when a male colleague tells about skipping a meeting because his child is sick, everyone goes like "ah, he is such a good father!" (and a good scientist of course, anyway)

    pkw ,
    @pkw@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @TatianaIlyina I was mentally riffing on this today. A lot!
    I have worked pre "work/life balance" and post.

    I see this, my male colleagues will be explicit about their childcare needs as a reason to miss meetings etc. This is very good in isolation.

    BUT at this point all my colleagues are white males (i work in tech. 🙁 ). All of the females are gone at this point so they don't get to take part in this "work life balance" thing. Which is incredibly frustrating.

    pkw ,
    @pkw@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @TatianaIlyina I don't know to be honest. I work for a large international corp. and the PR/HR answer to your question is probably yes.

    But I don't see it.

    The two main departments I work in are acquisitions and I have seen more people laid off in two years there than I have seen hires.

    pkw ,
    @pkw@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @TatianaIlyina What got me on thinking about this was trying to figure out why I don't like most notions of status quo. Where it lead me is that while not inherently good or bad it's still kind of bad, because status quo only begets status quo.
    The example here is that when you only have men in authority it will stay that way. Men are comfortable judging the merits of other men because they are similar.

    But that is a big problem in these times of NEEDED change.

    If you're going to be writing the html anyways, might as well make it fit in more with the other coder you are writing.

    As opposed to templates which are also good, but maybe more for big teams where the templates are written in isolation "over there".

    Because Earth's oceans are so big and so deep, it takes an immense amount of heat to warm them even a few degrees. But that's what we have accomplished.

    And — because the oceans are so big and so deep, the changes we are causing in them are essentially irreversible. We'll have to live, or die, with the consequences of our foolish behaviors.

    “Astounding” ocean temperatures in 2023 supercharged “freak” weather around the world as the climate crisis continued to intensify, new data has revealed.

    The oceans absorb 90% of the heat trapped by the carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, making it the clearest indicator of global heating. Record levels of heat were taken up by the oceans in 2023, scientists said, and the data showed that for the past decade the oceans have been hotter every year than the year before.

    The heat also led to record levels of stratification in the oceans, where warm water ponding on the surface reduces the mixing with deeper waters. This cuts the amount of oxygen in the oceans, threatening marine life, and also reduces the amount of carbon dioxide and heat the seas can take up in the future.

    @breadandcircuses I don't want to be a doomer, but I don't see how we haven't pushed things too far. If we stop the trend now, there will be fallout for maybe millennia to come. But... we haven't even come close to stopping the trend. And sociopolitics appear to be getting worse as times get scary.

    I rarely express how bad I really feel about this, because I don't want to make it worse by encouraging nihilism.
