Today in labor history April 29, 1895: The U.S. sent warships to Nicaragua to "protect" US interests. This was the first of many military interventions in that country. President Taft ordered the overthrow of President Zelaya in 1909. The U.S. later invaded in 1910 and occupied the country in 1912. However, the original Sandinistas defeated that occupation in 1933. But Sandino’s victory was short-lived because Anastasio Somoza assassinated him in 1934. Somoza brutally ruled Nicaragua for the next forty years, until the new Sandinistas overthrew him in 1979. And then, again, the U.S. intervened. This time, by funding the right-wing Contras. Later, when Congress blocked aid to the Contras, Reagan secretly funded them with illegal arms shipments to Iran.

#Nicaragua is asking the International Court of Justice (#ICJ) to order Germany to halt military arms exports to Israel and reverse its decision to stop funding the UN Palestinian refugee agency #UNRWA.
Nicaragua argues that Germany has violated the 1948 Genocide Convention by continuing to supply Israel with arms, despite the ICJ ruling that it is plausible Israel violated some rights under the convention during its assault on Gaza.
Germany has been a major arms exporter to Israel and one of its staunchest allies since the October 7 attacks by Hamas militants.

Today in Labor History February 21, 1934: Augusto Cesar Sandino, Nicaraguan independence fighter, was assassinated by Somoza’s Nation Guard. While in exile in Mexico during the early 1920s, Sandino participated in strikes led by the IWW. Inspired by the anarcho-syndicalist union, he adopted their red and black logo as the colors for the revolutionary Nicaraguan flag. The Sandinistas, or FSLN, who overthrew the dictator, Anastasio Somoza, in 1979, were named for Sandino.

#Nicaragua has applied to intervene in the case South Africa v. Israel under Article 62 of the ICJ Statute, arguing it has a "legal interest" due to the erga omnes partes nature of the Genocide Convention obligations. However, the ICJ has not previously accepted arguments based solely on a general legal interest in the law. Nicaragua also seeks to intervene as a party, which requires establishing a "jurisdictional link", likely via Article IX of the Genocide Convention. But it is unclear whether Nicaragua can establish the existence of a dispute with #Israel, which may be required to establish jurisdiction.
McIntyre concludes that while Nicaragua's application may be well-intended, it is ultimately unhelpful. Unlike Article 63 interventions, Article 62 interventions do not provide an automatic right and may drag out proceedings as the admissibility must be fully argued. Even if admitted, Nicaragua would gain full party rights, further complicating the case. Yet the Court's final decision would be no more binding on Israel than otherwise.
Thus, Nicaragua's actions may hinder rather than help address the human tragedy in Gaza.
