iPhone user here, that is...

...quite accurate actually.

I have used Android and even tried to switch to Android a few years ago, but whenever I use Android, I can't shake the feeling that uncle Google watches whatever I do, I don't get the same feeling when I use iOS.

Weather either feeling is accurate I can't say, but I hesitate to trust an ad compny's OS over a computer company's OS.

Again, that is just a feeling, I make no claim wither way which is factually better.

stoy ,

Did anyone ever believe that did anything?

I mean "asking" an app or webpage not to track you? That is ridiculous, the function should work to obfuscate your data from the app/website in the first place.

I say this as an iPhone user.

It makes sense if you remember that the universal healthcare system is insurance.

So if you are trying to migrate without a job but with an expensive disabillity and little money, then you are just a liabillity to the healthcare system.

And since the country is under no obligation to pay for the care, there is no reason for them to do so.

It is just basic resource management, you may not like it, but it is reality, regardless of what political system the country uses.

stoy ,

In this case we are numbers on a spreadsheet, we may not like it, but all nations have limited resorces, and need to practice resource management.

This goes for both capitalism and communism.

Anything else would be to deny reality.

However different governments use different metrics to approve or deny new citizens, but all boil down to if it is worth it to the country.

stoy ,

You are absolutely correct, most people want to work when they can, but look at it from the government's perspective, if they see a severely disabled person in his 50s with zero education, zero knowledge of the language wanting to migrate to the country, what they see is just an expense with few prospects of being able to contribute enough to offset the cost of treating/managing his disabillities.

He may be an absolute genious, but that is not known at the time, the government also must consider that any resources spent on this person can't be spent on someone else.

So in this case the financial argument is clearly against accepting the person, based on the information the government has, the person should be rejected.

In a purely financial world, that would be it, but luckily we live in a world with more incentives than purely greed.

Taking in the person will generate goodwill in some parts of the world, that might be reason enough to do it, or perhaps the person has valuable information that could also be reason to let them in, perhaps this person is part of a political party in his original country that you want to remain good friends with, then this is an excellent opportunity to show support.

All of this is extermely cold and calculating, I absolutely conceede that, but a government can selldom afford to let feelings dictate policy.

Even governments showing compassion do it for their own gain, it's good PR!

This is reality, and it is better to face it and deal with it than to fight with an immaginary entity.

stoy ,

Well you sure do live up to your nickname, being all hippie, but why are you fighting me?

I just explained the reasons why a country would need a medical checkup of anyone moving there.

I am just an IT guy, I don't set policy.

stoy ,

Sigh, the classic extremists trap, in order to be a good guy, you need to keep geeting more and more extreme.

You are basically saying that unless I am actively working toward the same goal you are, then I am a terrible person.

You mention that "when the government's aims are in conflict with the well-being of the people, the government has failed", that is litterarly my point!

The government has a duty of spending taxes to provide services for it's people (citizens and people with approved residency and work permits), a migrant requesting residency and work permits is not yet part of the governments people.

You say that capitalism and communism isn't the only economic systems, sure but no economic system in the world would be able to generate infinite resources.

TIE fighters fly around in space, space has no air, sound are vibrations of air, no air, no sound.

So if you can make your car completely quiet, then it sound like a TIE fighter.

But since that is impossible since you want to br driving around, you should duct tape some speakers to the roof and have a synth generate a continous TIE fighter tone, which would create the proper effect

stoy ,

No, physics still applies throughout all galaxies, it is still in the same universe.

However, one explanation could be that Star Wars takes places in a different universe, with different laws of physics.

Just get some loose linnen button down shirts, they are fantastic

If a useful brain-computer interface was available sometimes in your lifetime (and secure and safe) would you get one?

Background to this slightly weird question: I found one of my old an English exams on science fiction and dystopian literature from the 11th grade in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany (ca. 2004) and found a similar question. The idea back then was to discuss the pro- and cons of a BCI (and I objectively did not do to well back...

stoy ,

That depends on what it could do, and how granular it could be programmed.

I don't want any active interface, it should just be passive.

If I had a small chip in my head that I could program to reward a healthy lifestyle but nothing else, then yes I would be interested.

I mean something that would give me a slight dopamine hit when making healthy choises would be fantastic.

Now, that would be impossible to make, but that is the only kind of BCI I would accept

stoy ,

If I was free to do anything legal with enough money to maintain my current middle class lifestyle, then I would spend a lot of my time visiting cool places and photgraphing them.

I am no millionaire, not even in SEK, but make a good living, if I could keep my current pay and just do whatever, I would be travelling throughout Sweden and the rest of Europe looking for cool places, like abandoned industries, old/abandoned military infrastructure, old/abandoned civil infrastructure, cool modern places with infrastructure.

I'd probably save up to get a smaller crossover SUV, I love my 2021 Seat Leon, but it isn't brilliant at going over overgrown tracks.

stoy ,

IT guy here, it is fairly common to make a change in the system(tm), and need to reboot the device for the change to take effect.

When you stopped caring about staying in good shape?

I completely stopped caring about 2 years ago, I realized I was never going to do anything with my good look and that I will never get into a relationship in my life, so I just figured out "what's the point then, I'm already invisible to women?" And I don't care about my health tbh......

stoy ,

I have never been in good shape, allways overweight, I used to feel ashamed about it, but once I hit thirty I simply realized that there is no point to feeling ashamed, doing so only harms me and my attempts to get into a less bad shape.

stoy ,

Sadly San Pellegrino is part of Nestle, so I refuse to knowingly buy them any more...

stoy ,

Yeah, it sucks, sorry to be the one to tell you

stoy ,

Yeah, I particularly enjoyed the Arantica Rossa, just fantastic taste.

stoy ,

I enjoy photgraphy, mostly buildings and infrastructure, I have a gallery on a personal webhost, and never really share the link to it except to friends and family, but I have tyeblink to it on my CV.

The nuclear football is not a computer.

It contains the codes and procedures to order a strike, but it is not a computer.

According to sources from within the white house, in the 1980s it contained four items:

  • A black book of retaliatory options
  • A book listing classified site locations
  • A manilla folder with eight or ten pages staples together giving a discription of the procedures for the Emergency Alert System
  • A card with authentication codes

There is a small antenna protruding near the handle of the briefcase, which some believe means that there is communications equipment inside the case as well.

.....

I mean, yeah, the computer looks really cool!

Don't talk about the high concept of federation, talk about the community that the different services offer.

The classic misstake is to oversell and miss the point that the other party is focusing on.

Don't: "Lemmy is so awesome, it can't be shut down, it is federated, you can even run your own instance and have total control"

What the other party hears: "Lemmy is awesome, and you have to do a lot of stuff to join."

Do: "Hey, have you heard about Lemmy? It is a Reddit clone with a much calmer community, I have had a lot of interesting conversations over there"

This puts the focus on the community rather than the service, people join social networks for the interaction, not the tech.

stoy ,

36 years old here, I still have never been.

I just wanted to tell you that you are not alone,

I am doing ok though.

stoy ,

On a galatic scale, yes, on a human scale, absolutely not.

stoy ,

24C, scattered clouds, slow breeze.

stoy ,

What makes them "evil"?

stoy ,

I see that there is a lot of posts removed due to breaking Rule 1, but I can't see what community you posted to to check what rule they claimed you violated.

Please tell me what community you posted in so I can look at the rules and form an unbiased oppinion.

I did find other posts about how lemmy.world admins are terrible, but so far I have only seen anecdotes either way, and untill there are proven trends that tells me otherwise, I will refrain from bashing either side.

stoy ,

I lived through Covid without a car, taking public transport for all my transit needs, it was mostly fine, but I was so isolated as I didn't want to risk visiting my parents out of fear that I would infect them, I also never really did anything interesting and mostly sat home.

I now have a car and if shit hits the fan again would actually be able to get out and see stuff, I am talking nature, abandoned places and just being able to see new stuff would be so much better for my metal health.

I am not really doing anything to explicitly prepare, and Sweden managed quite well all things considered.

stoy ,

Don't they have plans to break out any US soldier about to stand trial in the ICC/Hauge?

stoy ,

I didn't even notice any downvotes....

Do you use both a personal desktop and laptop?

I'm moreso curious if laptop functions have been offloaded to phones. If you have a full gaming desktop, do you see the use case for an additional laptop? or if most people here don't see the need for the increased processing power of a desktop, do you just use your laptop and a phone?...

stoy ,

Personal desktop, work laptop, personal phone and work phone.

I am on the fence about getting a laptop as well, it is just sutch a fantastic tool.

On my future laptop, if I get one, I will run Linux as it extends the functionallity of a laptop massively.

I would mostly use it for managing photos, media consumption, SDR listening, network analysis and light gaming.

At the moment I an quite happy with my personal desktop computer running Windows 10, but with the insane crap M$ is pulling with Windows 11, I even disabled the TPM in my computer to avoid W11 from installing automatically.

I do however work in IT with Windows 11, and I enjoy my job, so that won't change.

stoy ,

All software extends the capabillities of hardware.

Linux has more tools that I would value in my personal laptop as compared to Windows.

Linux gives me more access to networking diagnostics which are the primary IT tools I want on my laptop

I have never been in a relationship in my 36 years, in my daily life I feel secure, but I am fucking terrified when I think about finding a partner, I am interested in finding one as I am getting pissed at allways being alone, but I have no idea on where to start.

stoy ,

That sounds like absolute hyperbole.

Also while there are times I do feel lonely and desperately want someone to share my life with, I am under no illusions that what I am imagining is a fairytale and that a real relationship will be very different.

In my dreams my partner has no real objectives on her own, that would be increadibly boring in reality.

In my dreams my partner is an accessory to my existance only existing to make me happy, in reality in an ideal relationship we both have goals, needs and wants, and work together to acchive both or goals, needs and wants.

I realize that my dream partner does not exist as I imagine her, and that we will both need to grow into a successfull partnership.

I am still quite happy living alone, so if/when a relationship doesn't work out, I will still be capable of living on my own.

I don't want a housewife, I find the entire concept unfair to both parties, unfair to me for shouldering me with all income for the household, unfair to my partner for forcing her to give up her carreer. I realize it works for some, but not for me.

stoy ,

Well obviously if you just speak to people who has had bad experiences, then yeah, you will just hear about the bad stuff...

Swedish suburb pizza, thin crust, full fat cheese, with ham and shrimp toppings, and some sauce bearnaise on the side. And a Trocadero soda to drink.

Thanks for alerting me to this new community, I have blocked it.

I used to be active on IRC a decade or so ago, I was QuakeNet and Chat4All for the most part.

Reflection gives questions, but few solid answers, hate gives you no questions, but all solid answers.

Living with hate is just soo much simpler, you can delfect any problems you encounter to be the fault of your targeted hate group.

I find disposable gloves, aprons and surgical masks to be sexy.

stoy ,

I remember browsing /b/ to be edgy as a teen back in 2003-2006, nothing more.

stoy ,

Yes, it happens from time to time.

We are not allowed to run an adblocker on company computers so I see ads when browsing the web, sometimes I see an ad for a cool product from my local camera shop that I want to learn more about, then I click the ad.

stoy ,

I once had a laptop that had AOL installed on it from the factory, I only started the program one or twice out of curiosity as I got the laptop from a Swedish retailer in Sweden....

stoy ,

Since this thread is hosted on lemmy.ml, I meant that.

stoy ,

They interrupt your current activity, they are often louder than the content you actually want to see, they are often repeated so often that they are grating and they often feature realy terrible acting.

An example I remember from s few years ago, when a chain of health clinics was expanding hard here in Sweden, the ad was constant for months, it started with an older woman who started her first sentence about how good the clinic was with a soft chuckle, that chuckle became increadibly grating.

I decided right then and there that that I will never do business with them.
