WTF? Threads is blocking links to the official website of France’s left coalition (Nouveau Front Populaire) in the upcoming snap legislative elections, https://www.nouveaufrontpopulaire.fr

(edit: fixed the link)

Stop telling me to use content warnings. I will lose it. If you’re bothered by my politics, then by all means mute me or one of the hashtags that I’m using.

I know you’re trying to protect yourselves and others, but all you’re effectively doing is asking an activist speaking out for their own survival to hide their fight behind curtains.

    Just stop.

As I'm nearing the release of @TangerineUI 2.0 (which will come out soon after Mastodon 4.3 is released), I feel it's a good time to remind everyone that I’ve invested an insane amount of time in creating this theme over the past year.

Sure, it is “just a CSS file,” but it's also the result of hundreds of hours spent carefully crafting a nicer visual experience, free for all to use.

So, if you love this theme and actively use it every day, I would be super grateful if you would consider leaving a tip on my Ko-fi page 💛 https://ko-fi.com/nileane

As expected, Macron has decided to campaign on “Don’t bother voting for the nazis, I can be a nazi too!” đŸ€Ș

‱ Same excerpt translated to English “The President of the Republic now mentions the "priority axes" and the "method" of government that he wishes to put in place, in the event of a victory in the legislative elections. In particular, he defended the "protection of [the] republican values". According to the Head of State, "the rise of the extreme right must be heard". He says he heard "deep doubts about what we are becoming" as well as "existential concern, the feeling of dispossession". "The fight against this feeling of dispossession first of all presupposes increased firmness towards all those who consider French citizenship as a sum of rights à la carte," he defended, calling for the establishment of "duties and commitments for the nation". After defending his record on sovereign issues, including laws on separatism, immigration and the recruitment of law enforcement, Mr. Macron believes that "all this has not been sufficiently seen, felt, understood by our compatriots". In particular, he wants "better control of the issue of unaccompanied minors who, in so many cities, are a security problem". "We must therefore first, relentlessly, continue to act for more security, more firmness," he pleaded before his government and the leaders of the presidential camp, calling for "more republican authority on all levels (...) within the framework of the Republic and its values”.”

French political news is such a rollercoaster right now. Macron has obliterated everything and created an insane chaos that we will all have to navigate through during the next three weeks to literally save our lives in the snap elections.

It’s never been so hard to keep going as an activist than right now. So much is at stake. Every single thing that we've been working on for the past few years is up in the air, and by next month, it all could become undone.

On the flip side, if the allied left comes through and wins this, then a whole new chapter can be opened. This may be our best and only shot in this decade.

I feel the same way about AI that I did about crypto when it started becoming a thing:

‱ All of the moral practices that make it possible are fucked beyond repair.

‱ It’s spawning some of the worst companies, and enriching some of the worst billionaires in the world.

‱ While there are some genuinely useful, practical applications for it, there are so few of them, and they have had so little positive impact so far, that it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be worth it anytime soon.

The French government has banned TikTok in New Caledonia following pro-independence protests.

When asked about the legality of the measure, it basically replied that since the territory is not subject to the EU’s jurisdiction, it’s perfectly allowed to ban social platforms however it likes.

What in the colonial crap is this bullshit. For fuck’s sake.

    https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2024/05/16/new-caledonia-emerges-from-third-night-of-unrest-amid-tiktok-ban-and-state-of-emergency_6671623_7.html

Here’s an article reporting on the questionable legality of the ban: https://www.bfmtv.com/tech/tiktok/emeutes-en-nouvelle-caledonie-comment-le-gouvernement-peut-interdire-tiktok_AV-202405150967.html

The government is exploiting a provision in the state of emergency law, which states: “The Minister of the Interior may take any measures necessary to ensure the interruption of any online public communication service that incites to commit acts of terrorism or glorifies such acts.”

    They’re calling the protesters terrorists.

Here’s a friendly reminder on this Monday morning:

Anti-trans activists like to pretend that they care about kids. They will spout all kinds of nonsense about how dangerous puberty blockers and HRT supposedly are for them.

Yet, most of them know full well the sort of suicidal rates you get among trans kids who are not allowed to transition.

They don’t care about kids: they’d rather have dead kids.

Great news coming from Germany: today, the Bundestag adopted the gender self-determination law, which will allow trans people to change their gender on their official papers with a simple declaration at the civil registry. Gone are the medical requirements. đŸłïžâ€âš§ïž

The law isn't perfect (a 3-month delay is to be observed before the change takes effect; minors will have to go through a dispute in court if their parents oppose the change), but it's still a huge step forward.

“Bluesky could be the future of content moderation”.

    I 100% disagree.

Yes, the protocol offers a plethora of ways to filter content and ensure you never come across, say, Nazis.

But that’s not what content moderation is. Content moderation is making decisions. It is either welcoming or refusing certain types of content on your platform.

If you’re letting everyone in, and telling your users "but you have control!", you’re not moderating anything. You’re just quitting.

    Huge yikes.

Kagi is now partnering with Brave to power its search results — and they seem to be dismissing their users’ concerns regarding this partnership with a company that’s notorious for being led by a proud anti gay rights supporter.

Just as I’ve consistently advised against using Brave’s products, I now advise against using Kagi as long as it contributes to a homophobic business.

There can be no neutral politics when it comes to people’s rights and lives.
