The deal with wealth is that it's not income. Wealth is income accumulated over time.

So is your 80% top bracket rate a one time thing, or every year?

mkwt ,

Why is Bill Gates paying a smaller proportional share than the other two?

mkwt ,

The thing is that in the presence of wealth taxes, wealth dis-accumulates exponentially in the same way that it accumulates exponentially without the tac.

So you end up needing much lower percentage rates on wealth to get the same effect as an 80% tax on marginal income. Wealth tax rates as low as single % would dramatically alter the distribution of wealth.

The legislation that directed these rules to be written was actually passed by Congress a few years ago.

It takes quite some time for new federal regulations to be written and enacted, with lengthy public comment periods.

A better analogy would be the mass outsourcing of call center jobs to South Asia.

Well that's where it's at now. There's no guarantee it will stay that way. Give Moore's law several more cycles, and maybe we'll have enough computing power to make drop in replacement humans.

I think people are misinformed about the current readiness of AI specifically because Silicon Valley VCs have taken a lot of the R&D funding market share from the DARPA government types.

VC funding decisions are heavily oriented around the prototype product demo. (No grant writing!). This encourages "fake it till you make it": demo a fake product to get the funding to build the real one. This stuff does leak out to the public, and you end up with overstated capabilities.

mkwt ,

It's only a matter of time before these compankes start trying to simulate human brains.

This is why I invoked Moore's law earlier. People have already estimated how many petaflops or exaflops we need to simulate a brain's worth of neurons and a complete connectome. We currently don't have enough computer power. But if the exponential growth continues, we will get there.

What's really funny is that SBF is well known in the crypto space, but the way he made his first fortune had nothing to do with crypto at all.

It was good old fashioned currency arbitrage that originally involved transporting suitcases of paper money on passenger airline flights.

I think there's one situation where the border was defined by the river but then the river moved, and some Americans ended up on the Mexican side of the river. I'm not sure if this is an active border dispute or not.

I think there are some semi active disputes going about the possibility that some American water management activities in the watershed may cause the river to shift more. For reference, the headwaters of the Rio Grande are deeper into US territory, not on the border

There's a flip side to the politics: criticism from the right-wing pro-Israel faction is quieter than usual because a separate group of anti-semites have gained power in the Republican party.

Normally, Biden wouldn't have much incentive listen much to the far left, but right now he's not paying much in costs from the other side.

mkwt ,

So you're saying that Biden had another motivation here: telling Netanyahu, "the US ain't nobody's bitch, and you don't tell me what to do."

mkwt ,

I can't wait for 37 more ballots of Hakeem Jeffries almost winning.

Scoop: Biden privately told Bibi he's not trying to push him out ( www.axios.com )

Behind the scenes: During the call with Biden on Monday, Netanyahu complained about Schumer's speech and Biden's endorsement of it. He also claimed the public political attacks against him in the U.S. are interference in Israeli politics, the sources said....

Honestly, I think Lemmy is just not thinking straight on Israel and Palestine. There are just some truly wild ideas that seem to get traction around here.

(Like seriously, Israel has no justification to attack a hospital even if Hamas stages nuclear weapons there??!?)

mkwt ,

For earned income overseas, US grants a credit for income tax payed to a foreign government. So if you live overseas and work a job, and the country you live in has higher taxes than the US, you can end up owing no US tax. But you still have to file the tax return every year.

Israel is a long ways away from the Caribbean and central America, where the CIA had the most success with that stuff, thanks to the Monroe doctrine.

I don't think it's that easy to get what you want in the Middle East.

It's American specifically. "Come-to-Jesus" evokes the tent revival culture that started in the second great awakening in the 1830s and continues to the present day.

In the tent revival culture, an itinerant preacher will ride into a (typically small) town and pitch a tent for about a week or two (or more). They then attempt to "revive" the faith of the townspeople by preaching intensely for several hours at a time, sometimes for multiple times per day. In typical Christian fashion these services will include multiple invitations to literally "come to Jesus" by publicly confessing sins and professing faith before the whole group, thereby becoming born again. Regular church goers are expected to attend revival sessions every night when they're in town.

Everything about the tent revivals evokes imagery of the early Christians in Acts and the epistles. Large crowds and mass conversions. That sort of thing.

And just for the sake of science: do you have an opinion on NATO?

Texas has an open primary

Anyone registered to vote can choose a Republican or Democratic ballot. Many of the people on the Democratic ballot (in my area) are running unopposed, so it was a good opportunity to try to get the least crazy people on the November ballot. Also, the republican ballot has 13 propositions that are not on the Democratic one, so...

mkwt ,

Here's something to consider if you're thinking about selecting a different party ballot than you normally would:

If you select a party today, you are bound by state law to stay with that party for the entire rest of the election cycle.

This choice is also public info, and it will influence what kinds of mailers you will get.

Letitia James ready to seize Trump buildings if he can't pay $355M fine: report ( www.rawstory.com )

New York Attorney General Letitia James is ready to seize former President Donald Trump's iconic New York City buildings if he can't come up with the cash to pay his $355 million civil fraud fine, a new report shows. "If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enfo...

Any debt leftover after the sale is still owed by the debtor (i.e. big orange one). Of course, if that debtor has no other assets left, you're probably not going to get paid.

As far as I know (not a lawyer, not your lawyer), some legal judgements can be discharged in bankruptcy, while others cannot. I don't know about this judgement. As an example, I believe OJ Simpson is still evading a wrongful death judgement that he cannot escape through bankruptcy.

Another wrinkle: usually in order to appeal a judgement, you have to post an appeal bond that covers the value of the judgement. And the deadlines to do that are often very, very short.

mkwt ,

It's also not really a fine. Under the New York statute the government is obliged to recover all of the ill-gotten gains from the fraud. No matter how much they are.

The veto and permanent seats are there to keep the superpowers in the UN organization. If you take away the veto, then US, Russia, etc would probably just say they don't recognize the authority of the security council, and then go do their own thing.

This veto mechanic kept the US and USSR in the room and at least talking to each other throughout the entire cold war. That's gotta be worth something.

To be fair, they probably spent a decade or more planning, designing, building, launching, and completing the actual sample return. Once the actual samples are safely in the lab, I'm sure there are no deadlines whatsoever. Take whatever time it takes to do it right.

Judge Aileen Cannon Is Quietly Sabotaging the Trump Classified Documents Case ( slate.com )

On Friday, District Judge Aileen Cannon issued a new order in the Donald Trump classified documents case adding to the mountain of evidence that she is firmly in the former president’s pocket. Trump appointed Cannon in 2020 and the Senate confirmed her appointment in the days after he lost the 2020 election. It’s deeply...

Seems like it's more of "Jack Smith wants to get this trial going" vs. "Cannon maybe wants to back door delay it a little while."

In any case, I don't think Smith is going to win his fight for a speedy trial. There are just too many was to dilly dally.

Practical answer: pour funding into immigration courts and hire a bunch more immigration judges, and scale up the pro bono legal aid.

The phenomena of mass asylum requests are driven by the 4 year wait times to get a case adjudicated. If we got that down to a couple of months, then fewer people with weak cases would attempt it.

Air is a compressible fluid. Water is incompressible. Energy from shock waves will be transmitted from the hull to the crew in a much more efficient fashion.
