Treczoks ,

The louder he rants, the more likely he'll end up with a stroke. Not the worst outcome, don't you agree?

wildcardology ,

How can a genius not know this is going to happen?

Pretzilla , (edited )

The $350M is low since it's only a loss recovery. Effectively a low interest loan.

Triple damages are more in line to dissuade fraudsters from fraudding.

Well now he has been found liable, there is a possibility for financial institutions to file suit if they feel they had damages.

They will probably wait for the election cycle to be over. If he is not elected.. he might have some banks that would like to discuss missed payments.

Rail all you want, doesn't matter.

Pay up, bitch.

Kaboom ,

That sounds excessive. What was the previous high for an individual?

Boddhisatva ,

It's not for an individual. This was him and his assorted companies in New York that committed all these actions. It's also not excessive. It's still less than the profit he made over the years as a result of his fraud.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

As you've already been told, it is not a fine on Trump personally. But also, Alex Jones has been ordered to pay $1.5 billion in his civil suit. And that is him personally.

HandBreadedTools ,

And that fuck deserves to be forced to pay every dime of it and then some. He is still trying to weasel out of it but he's firmly in the find out phase.

mkwt ,

It's also not really a fine. Under the New York statute the government is obliged to recover all of the ill-gotten gains from the fraud. No matter how much they are.

Jaysyn ,
@Jaysyn@kbin.social avatar

It's 3 different civil cases.

Maybe Trump should stop being such a fucking scumbag?

Trump's company is force to pay back how much theyt stole by lying. And that is a lot of lying and theft.

Dkarma ,

Lower than recommend fine.

Theprogressivist ,
@Theprogressivist@lemmy.world avatar

His fraud is excessive.

Kaboom ,

So was Bernie Madoffs

Theprogressivist ,
@Theprogressivist@lemmy.world avatar

Okay? And?

Burn_The_Right ,

And how did that work out for him?

Kaboom ,

Didn't pay nearly the same fine

Burn_The_Right ,

He died penniless in a federal prison. I agree that Trump should get that same outcome.

Perfide ,

This isn't solely for Trump as an individual for one thing, but also I'm pretty sure Alex Jones holds the record with the $1.5 BILLION he personally owes the Sandy hook families.

superduperenigma ,

How is it excessive to make a group of fraudsters pay back the money they defrauded people of?

elbarto777 ,

Shup up, Russian propagandist.

Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Have you been living under a rock? This is in no way excessive, probably even so low as Trump now faces the dilemma.. should I appeal. Cause if he does there is a risk of higher fine outcome.

During the whole trial Trump and his lawyer have antagonized the judge in an attempt to make him overreach and allow them to disqualify the judge.. it was unsuccesfull.

This paired with lying, forgetting, and even a key witness for trump now being brought up on perjury charges.
