What's your server wattage?

I'm in the process of wiring a home before moving in and getting excited about running 10g from my server to the computer. Then I see 25g gear isn't that much more expensive so I might was well run at least one fiber line. But what kind of three node ceph monster will it take to make use of any of this bandwidth (plus run all my...

mesamunefire ,

My pi costs probably around 20 a year lol.

mesamunefire ,

reddit is about the same in my opintion, but I do see a lot more activity on the lemmy side. I think its a combination of:

  1. Less rules around communities. The barrier of entry is much lower here to post, and things dont get auto-removed because of trigger happy mods.
  2. 2% of users post 90% of content. And a lot of them moved over to lemmy.
  3. Servers can be brought into existence and removed at will. This may seem like a bad thing, but what it means is that the best lemmy servers can evolve and be successful in a way reddit cant. Some have different modifications to make them more user friendly, some have excellent uptime, etc...etc...
  4. People from mastodon/misskey/other fediverse instances can comment/post. Even if that is not what a vast majority of us do, it does help the numbers and will continue to help engagement.

Also to @Blaze Do you know if the sats above take into account the generally banned instances of lemmy? I know that a lot of instances earlier this year decided to become de-federated from the general fediverse. Do you happen to know if the website take into account those servers?

mesamunefire ,

Fair enough.

mesamunefire ,

Self hosting piped helps too. Love my little system.

mesamunefire OP ,

It's all good. It's really crazy and most of the chapters are free on their website.

And the author makes a metric fucknton of updates per month. At one point I thought there might be ghost writers....but the author streams for patreon which is wild. So yeah no funny business.

mesamunefire ,

This is excellent! Thanks. Anyway to self host? I dont want to bog down your system.

mesamunefire ,

It's a fun one once you start following people and looking for recommendations from them.

mesamunefire ,

Makes sense. I wish bookwyrm did recommendations based on other people's recommendations. Or category recommendations maybe?

mesamunefire ,

Thats a good idea, ill give it a try.

mesamunefire ,

Well i tried. Hopefully I get a response?

mesamunefire OP ,

Its interesting to see what issues his audience was having and some common solutions. Just like any OS, there are some issues but its also interesting to see how people are using Linux.

mesamunefire ,
  • @thelinuxexperiment is pretty neat. I like his reviews and news in the space.
  • @jeffjagoe I like the non-smash bros content they pop out once in a while.
  • @veronicaexplains She has some awesome linux and linux specific content. We watch her content over at our local makerspace when she has new videos.
  • https://tilvids.com/videos/overview - Awesome instance with great channels. Also one of the best support structures ive seen for peertube.
  • @coolmancoffeedan - Some strange stuff, but mostly uplifting? I think?
mesamunefire ,

Are you planning on self hosting this article? Perhaps on writefreely?

mesamunefire ,

Yeah yunohost is pretty great for less than 10 users. Perhaps more depending on the service. Its very easy to get setup in a weekend with a plethora of services. And its pretty stable.

mesamunefire ,

How far away are we from full federation on gitea?

mesamunefire ,

If we fund a peertube instance we could do that.

mesamunefire ,

Very true. It's not so much the hosting, it's monetary value.

mesamunefire OP ,

yeah....its just surreal. I grew up when there was no Internet at all. Now we have bots mining data from a website to get more human-like responses (and more $$). Its a strange world.

mesamunefire ,

Yeah, I just installed it a month ago and the subscribing of communities was not working. Everything else worked even if it was an old version. Its unfortunate as its almost there.

Most of yunohosts self hosting services are fantastic and dont require me to do a ton of work getting apps up and running (as well as maintenance).

Bitwise Industries stole our 401k money after they took it out of our paychecks. And two last paychecks. The CEOs are still not behind bars. And we never got our money back. The 401k money is gone but one of the CEOs got a new Tesla.

mesamunefire ,

Or give them the password. They aren't going to check if your still alive.

Are there any EV cars without any "technology"?

Like the title says, are there any EVs that just have a Bluetooth radio and that's it? Like a normal car, not a smartphone on wheels? If not, do you all think that this will actually happen at some point? This is the main reason why I can't (and will never) buy an EV. I like to have actual buttons everywhere on my car. I think...

mesamunefire ,

Any good choices? Been thinking of getting an old civic and seeing if anyone local can do it.

What hobbies or volunteer work require creative problem solving from lots of different areas?

I'm a bit of a jack of all trades. When I work on a project I use anything from woodworking and sewing to chemistry and physics to human physiology and psychology. I also like reading up then chatting about random science and history and art stuff. I like working with computers occasionally, and I'll just randomly throw some...

mesamunefire ,

Community makerspaces are great. You get into quite a few areas all over the place.

mesamunefire ,

In my industry, people can get very toxic really quickly over minor details. I've decided quite a few times to just let things go, even if they are blatantly wrong.

You end up in a situation where the person on the other end really just does not want to drop it, has to "win" no matter what. Even if the subject in itself was something you went to school learning/writing a paper on.

mesamunefire ,

Just be careful you dont get "Boeing"ed.
