I have an MS Trackball Optical (that I have been using since 2002). Just can't go back to a regular push-mouse.

Tyrian is such an awesome game, I must have replayed it a dozen times!

I am a little tempted to see how ME handles the modern web but it seems like a good way to b0rk my setup.

nik282000 OP ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

Huh, I wonder if there is a way to play HL2 on this setup without Steam.

I have a few of those "HD" laptop's rolling around, they are pretty horrendous (and easy to get for free). When LCDs first came out I was kinda disappointed that I was going from ~2k CRTs back to 1024x768. Even now the default is only 1920x1080 which is only 10% larger than the CRT for this PC.

Finding 2 sticks of ram that both worked AND worked together was a slog of boot/swap/rebooting. It really is just plug and play these days.

When I had ME the first time around I do remember there being some stability issues but I never had it totally brick, even with the assload of sus softeware that came from Kazaa and Morpheus.

nik282000 OP ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

I got it on Kazaa ;)

ME is how I learned the work 'kernel' and that it can have <unknown error>

Oh man, we have 30+ PCs in the building that are used to control big automated machines, they used to run on XP at 1024x768. When they started to fall apart I offered up the solution of using modern machines running Debian and putting the SCADA software in a virtual machine, this was rejected. They instead went with Lenovo micro-PCs and Windows 10. They then paid a programmer to manually rearrange and scale up every machine page page to fit on a 1920x1080 screen. FML.

Did you play Squadrons? The mission briefings were still not up to X-Wing/Tie Fighter standards but the flight was 10/10.

I seem to remember having issues with XP and Dos games but if ME is too problematic I will try 98 and XP. Though if I'm going with XP I'll be using a half built P4 PC that I have hanging around.

nik282000 OP ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

It's been literally 20 years, but I seem to remember having more issues with XP than ME as far as Dos compatibility. I have already run into some audio troubles so a dedicated card might be the next step.

@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

we expect the owner of the other computer to be very competent

Why? If nothing else we have learned in the past 20 years that large operators are the ones MOST likely to get data leaked or stolen, literally every major platform has had at least one major cockup in that time. They are all motivated by profits first and security maybe third or lower.

I am all for the frivolous, childish, and irresponsible use of the internet, but that community just seems like a shit magnet. The absolute best case scenario is that nothing happens, anything else will be worse, like Lemmy.ca becoming the hub for b-list celebrity hate-clubs.

It's MICRO plastic, literally too small for you to see. If you look at a new tooth brush under a microscope compared to a used one there are very clear signs of wear.

0-50f is cold enough to kill you by exposure, 75f is comfortable, 100f is uncomfortable, higher than 100f can kill you. Seems kinda arbitrary to me.

In 2022 more than 1% of CRVs were stolen in Canada! More than 1 in every 100 fucking CRVs!

https://www.guideautoweb.com/en/articles/72689/honda-cr-v-once-again-leads-top-10-most-stolen-vehicles-in-canada/

nik282000 ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

The CRV has dogshit security.

The doors can be unlocked using a relay attack done with off the shelf radio gear. Once the doors are open a new keyfob can be paired to the car using more off the shelf tools and another relay that makes the car think the owners fobs are in the vehicle. The whole process takes 5 minutes and can be done by an unskilled person. I have video of the whole process happening in my driveway.

And I am not saying that proprietary tools are the answer. Requiring literally ANY user interaction with the keyfob to unlock the door OR when pairing new fobs to the car would prevent the majority of thefts. Requiring the manufacture to digitally sign fobs when pairing to a car would prevent this. Given that ALL of these vehicles come with wireless communication, whether it is enabled for you or not, having a remote disable would prevent stolen vehicles from being moved around.

Whether by ignorance or cost cutting Honda is 100% responsible for the complete lack of security features on their vehicles.

If it looks like it's never been wet plug it into a power bar so you can flip it off if anything goes 'wrong'. If you aren't sure it's totally dry a day in a warm room wont hurt it (I left mine in the garage for a week but mostly out of apathy).

Algospeak. The voluntary censoring of your own language to satisfy the advertising requirements of corporations who want to monetize your thoughts.

While I do understand the need for language guidelines on platforms, the nearly instant training of TikTok users to avoid or substitute brand-unfriendly language is disgusting.

nik282000 ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

My issue with it is that it ONLY serves to satisfy corporate goals, it doesn't actually prevent people from being exposed to ideas or topics that might be distressing or disturbing to some users. It's sucking corporate cock and being proud of it.

nik282000 ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

Using abbreviations or initialisms obscures the meaning from people who are not in the know but does nothing to prevent people who might not want to think about the topic from being exposed to the idea, the code IS the idea. Not using coded language maintains clarity, does not bow down to corporate interest and is just as easily caught by filters for people who do not wish to be exposed to those topics.

DIY Paul Ion (Particle) Trap [oc] ( i.imgur.com )

The two hemispheres are electrically connected to each other and to an AC power supply, the ring is connected to the same AC supply but 180 degrees out of phase. Particles are charged and then injected into the trap, they are then alternately attracted to the ring and hemispheres causing them to oscillate and become trapped! As...
