"In addition to his comments about Russia in Ukraine, Trump said something else in Thursday’s CNN presentation that should be called out for its embrace of one of the darkest moments in U.S. history." https://open.substack.com/pub/heathercoxrichardson/p/june-30-2024?r=1tzqrj&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

@KeithAmmann A reminder that MAGA is first and foremost about race, and Trump knows that. The number one predictor of who participated in Jan 6 was whether they lived in an area where the white population was in decline as a percentage of the whole. A whopping 92% of people charged in connection with Jan 6 were white. He was implicitly declaring his support for race-based classism, a play to his base, and one that I think occurs very naturally for him.

@loren Even as I watched low-lying leaves in our garden disappear fragment by fragment, I admired the tenacity of the slugs who survive 100+ degree days in Yucatán.

Tell me: how does it make sense that an entry-level federal employee is subject to more stringent ethics rules than Supreme Court justices?

markproxy ,
@markproxy@bigshoulders.city avatar

@rbreich Because freedom is a perk of power, not a human right.

@Nonilex Odd and seemingly inaccurate use of the word "delegation". I don't see any indication that there was a delegation of official authority to these people.

markproxy ,
@markproxy@bigshoulders.city avatar

@Nonilex Perhaps "cadre"?

Walmart hiked prices on its Great Value food brands.

The result? Its net income spiked 93% to $10.5 billion towards the end of 2023.

Walmart rewarded shareholders with $5.9 billion in buybacks and dividends.

When I say price gouging is driving inflation, this is what I mean.

@rbreich If only anti-trust laws were applied more vigorously to regional markets. Enforcement is hard.

Donald Trump just threatened a “bloodbath for the country” if he doesn’t get elected this November.

This would be a good day to donate to Democrats up & down the ballot.

"I take full responsibility and never intended to hurt the US, FBI or my family."

He's been on this planet for 55 goddamned years, and he somehow deceived himself into thinking this wouldn't hurt the US, FBI, or his family? Uh-huh.

I was asked what the first movie that ever scared me was.

It's impossible for me to say. Go far enough back and memories of movies blur into a single thing.

I can say it was black and white and had Peter Cushing in it.

markproxy ,
@markproxy@bigshoulders.city avatar

@Tim_Eagon @selzero For me, it was Forever Young, Forever Free. The rolling-downhill-in-a-tire scene was VERY frightening to me. It might even have influenced my sense of what is an acceptable level of risk.

This is everywhere. This is everything.

If we want to halt the relentless of every good and service we pay good money for, we need to get rid of two things, altogether:

  • Legally enshrined shareholder primacy
  • The entire executive class
