I hear what you're saying, but I think that as a human that thinks that democracy and human rights are like pretty important, it's hard for me not to support the people I see opposing a system like Russia's.

And yeah I get that Ukraine's democracy has problems, and Russia is probably not as bad as western media would have us believe, but I can't believe I'm so deceived that democracies shouldn't resist imperial aggression.

It sucks that ordinary people get their lives destroyed, but we should blame Russia, and support Ukrainians in resisting.

And yeah I know you didn't say we shouldn't, and yeah of course a lot of Ukrainians want the war to just end. I don't know, it seems like lots still aren't ready to give up.

m0darn ,

Re: popular support for the war amongst Ukrainians in Ukraine: yeah we can't really know, and of course they can't have an election.

Re: zelensky's attitude: I do think that the 'never surrender' approach is actually a very useful negotiation tactic and I don't know how you'd get people to fight at all if you tell them their just fighting for slightly better terms in a treaty...

m0darn ,

My understanding of the comic is:

The complainer is holding a MAGA hat so extrapolating that he actually is a MAGAT, he is letting the mask slip and admitting that MAGARepublicans are fascists, and people willing to vote for Biden are opposed to fascism.

Is it your position that people willing to vote for Biden are fascists?

I see lots of people are pointing out that these numbers don't make sense. Here are some of my thoughts.

I'm not an economist so I'm probably making some very basic mistakes but...

GDP per capita is $76.3k [Google]
Average household size 2.6. [Google]
So GDP per household is $198.4k [Calculator]

That is the mean productivity per household.

But the median income per household is $75k [Google]

So what happens to the $123.4k of productivity (198.4k-75k) per household that isn't paid to workers? It's in the outliers and is asset appreciation isn't it?

m0darn ,

Yeah I had to replace my phone's screen and the digitizer has never been the same. I've corrected it to something sensible, I'm not sure what my original word choice was though.

m0darn ,

I used median household income to account for the fact that not every person in a household is earning. I wasn't confident that median individual earnings would include people that aren't earning.

m0darn ,

I live in Vancouver but didn't grow up here. I know of the 88->HH dog whistle, and um 14 words or something like that but are there any others I ought to keep my kids away from?

So if Mark (believed to be the oldest Gospel IIRC) was like 20 when Jesus died, and then ~100 years later his story was written down. He was writing it down when he was 120? Seems more likely that Mark's 3rd generation students wrote it down after they realized that nobody had even second hand accounts of what had happened. Right? Mark had a mixture of first hand (things he saw) and second hand (things he heard about from people that saw them) accounts, his direct pupils had second & third hand accounts (things Mark told them, and they learned through correspondence with other Christian witnesses), but after 100 years those guys are dying too.

How do they compile all the teachings they've received? How much of what they were taught was Mark and how much was Jesus?

It seems like not a good way to get the message out....

Jesus died so that whosoever believeth in him shall not die but shall have ever lasting life... but don't worry about like writing any of this down or anything for like 100 years. What does it mean to believe in him? I think that's clear enough, we don't need to elaborate.

m0darn ,

Yeah I blocked him/ them after the mod insisted that Russia is a "down right democratic nation", and then didn't meaningfully engage with any of my followup/ clarifying questions.

That's not a political view, that's an alternate reality.

I'm actually opposed to banning the community though. I don't want to give him the satisfaction. As you suggest, Just block it and get on with your life.

m0darn ,

So I work in industrial automation, and live in a high cost of living part of Canada.

Back around 2017 or so, companies said we were in a labor shortage. I sold a few robots to factories that couldn't keep people in a few of their jobs (I'm thinking of two different small factories). These are tasks that are so boring that people lose their minds. The factories would hire someone and they'd quit after a week.

When the cost of continuously hiring new people became apparent, they bought robots.

m0darn ,

I'm not sure it's that simple. I think if you offered someone 150k to do the job, they'd do it for long enough to build some savings then quit and live off of that while they found something more fulfilling to do.

I think that really the only way to keep people in that job is for them to have terrible alternatives.

The job was to put a small piece of metal into a machine (brake press), push a button, and take the now slightly bent piece of metal out of the machine.

The metal is part of a hinge for something like a knee brace. The factory makes a bunch of metal components for different things but didn't make the whole knee brace.

I guess the company could try to get a higher price for the part, or just say they don't want that contract... but people need knee braces. So yeah, I don't feel bad about selling them a robot. Some jobs are just better done by machines. The issue is wealth concentration.

Maybe a worker's council could have found a way to make the job less bad.

m0darn ,

Totally.

m0darn ,

Height is such a bad thing to filter based on.

My wife's best friend was complaining about how she goes on lots of dates but there's never a real connection. She is a little taller than average but insisted she needed a guy at least 6'2" (so he would be at least X" taller than her when she was wearing X" heels).

That's just a terrible priority if you want a real connection.

Because you want to have to tilt your head up at least 20° (?) to kiss while wearing high heels, you're willing to eliminate 95% of bachelors? Have you considered the logistics of kissing while you're not wearing high heels?

But the criterion was like a point of pride for her, like her ego wouldn't allow her to look for someone less than 6'2". Super weird. Just not a good way to find a partner.

m0darn ,

I'm sure it wasn't scaled or normalized at all. It's global annual deaths.

It would be interesting to see what percentage of annual premature deaths they account for in countries with any deaths.

Ie lions and hippos are presumably a much large percentage of annual premature deaths in countries where there are any lion and hippo deaths, whereas mosquito deaths happen in many more countries, and homicides in basically all countries.

I'm actually quite shocked by the number of lion and hippo deaths.

Would it be too optimistic for me hope for him to be sentenced to one day in jail, and 1 year house arrest?

eg. An English loyalist blocks George Washington from being president by fraudulently getting him convicted of a felony; is that a reasonable thing we should have codified in the Constitution?

An English loyalist that can prove beyond reasonable doubt, as judged by 12 peers which George Washington can help select...

A felon can be elected, but committing felonies should have consequences, for example it being more difficult to get elected.

I know a lawyer at Roper-Greyell. The firm specializes in defending/protecting companies around employment law. They probably also consult on best practices for companies to avoid suits.

They are a law firm, but they are LMG's law firm. Note that we're reading what LMG wants to share about the report, not the report itself.

It's a legal strategy to say, "Investigators didn't find anything seriously wrong, and we're considering suing you for defamation"

A lot of the other replies to your comment read between the lines in some insightful ways. I would just like to also add that "claims of bullying and harassment were not substantiated" means that the investigation didn't find evidence. Not that the bullying/ harassment didn't occur. It is kind of meaningless without knowing what information was looked at. What sorts of substantiation could reasonably be expected from the investigation?

It's possible that the person making allegations has evidence that the investigators didn't.

I was taught in boy scouts that an upside down flag is a symbol to request help.

It actually is a good symbol to represent the state of America. Just not for the reasons they think

Lol

It's kinda hard to illustrate them taking turns picking the fruit and equitably sharing what they pick each time. What happens if a third person shows up. Or if one of these people is selling the apples for export to a prosperous country and the other is feeding the destitute in their village.

But you don't need to know the co-ordinates of perfection to know which direction is better.

m0darn ,

These are aspects of genocide not stages.

For example:

1 Discrimination can start before symbolization

2 The government doesn't need to create specific groups to perform actions

3 Genocide doesn't need to include extermination

A lot of them were taken to Caribean sugar plantations, and Brazil.

BUT a lot (most?) of the people being taken to the American colonies came through the Caribbean. Since this chart shows departures from Africa that wouldn't be shown, only transit directly to America

Using hydrogen doesn't emit carbon. But the principal way hydrogen is produced is called steam reformation. It's a process that turns methane (CH4) and water (2* H2O) into hydrogen (4* H2) and CO2 (i think, I'm not an expert). So all the carbon get emitted as co2. So it's not better, and there are a bunch of inefficiencies too. (The reformation process itself, and transportation challenges, and leakage). But theoretically, it does centralize the emissions which would make them easier to sequester so there's that.

m0darn ,

I read a story the other day about several murder charges that fell apart in BC because the cops (willfully) refused to obey evidence handling laws. (I think they managed to still get conviction on lesser charges though, which is something I guess).

The cops have such disdain for the law, it's infuriating.

m0darn ,

The messaging could have been clearer but I'll spell it out for the dumb.

Phase 1:

Don't panic buy medical supplies expecting them to protect you. We don't have enough, and frontline healthcare workers need them to protect themselves and others, you don't know how to wear them and they probably don't fit you properly.

Phase 2:

We still don't really have enough medical grade masks but just fyi: any sort of mouth covering will reduce the risk of a contagious person sneezing into the mouth of a vulnerable person. If you have to go out, please wear something over your face. Cotton is better than nothing.

Phase 3:

A tight fitting mask really is best, it limits a contagious person's generation of aerosolized clouds of viruses, and limits a vulnerable person's exposure to clouds of aerosolized viruses.

I don't think the KGB felt like the CIA were always ahead of them.

Aldrich Ames is an interesting character to read about for example.

Yeah definitely. My point was that the existential panic of the mother resonated with me a lot more once I had a kid.

m0darn ,

I have a colleague that has a wife from the Philippines. They live in Canada but are building a house there. He said I should come visit, and I replied something about how my wife would love a tropical vacation. He replied:

Bringing your wife on vacation to the Philippines is like bringing a lunchbag to a restaurant.

... ... ... cool.

m0darn OP ,

I don't have a computer with a bluray drive, only laptops.

m0darn OP ,

Okay, I think $80 Canadian for a case, psu, mobo, cpu, & ram is sounding pretty reasonable. I just don't know of its enough processing power for the video stuff. But I guess if not I can upgrade the mobo/cpu or add a graphics card.

Thanks, that channel looks great.

Re offsite backup: Yes I don't have so many family photos that it will be difficult/ expensive to store online. But I need to get them together first.

m0darn ,

Your explanation makes sense to me, an uninvolved spectator with no particular knowledge of generators.

Maybe you direct the generator exhaust over the exterior of the tank? Would that be adequate heat?

My thought was to recall that my 20# propane tank has some sort of safety valve integrated into it that will clamp outflow if there is too big a surge in flow. Flow needs to be 0 for a minute or so for it to reset. But that doesn't explain your experience with the larger tank.

POV: you're 37 and spend 3 hours looking at memes, but don't print any.

m0darn ,

Looking at the chart you linked my feeling is that the best way to reduce food waste is:

More/tastier/healthier frozen foods.

This will reduce post sales food wastage, as well as wastage at the market.

m0darn ,

A few people in here conflating randomness with luck, as if the existence of probabilistic outcomes means that a person can have luck. Some people have fortunate outcomes from probabilistic processes and call that good luck. Some people: negative, and bad. The fortunate (too often) deny the probabilistic nature of the process, and call the unfortunate "weak". The unfortunate decry the inequity of the outcomes and call the fortunate the benefactors of unearned luck.

Ron is doing a great job of demonstrating unscientific, motivated reasoning, since acknowledging the possibility of unfortunate outcomes for the "strong" undermines the entitlements of the fortunate. Which can be very damaging to their psyche/ego.

The problem our society faces is that outcomes often aren't probabilistic enough. The main determinants of fortune are too often not luck, but the ability of one's parents to create opportunity for, and invest in/ support their children. The people that end up with favorable life outcomes have more ability to do the preceding, and/or reinforce systems that increase the probability of their children having fortunate outcomes (ie decrease the probabilistic nature of the favourability of life outcomes).

The meme is a bit of physics and a bit of sociology.

How much extra force does a vacuum tunnel have to withstand to avoid collapse, compared to a regular tunnel?

Dirt weighs ~1.5 tons per cubic meter. So one meter of soil depth is 15,000 N/m^2^ (1500kg * 9.8 m/s^2^) so 15 kpa/m (which is 2 PSI per yard of depth).

Vacuum can't provide more force than atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure is 100kPa or 15 PSI. Adding vacuum load adds the equivalent crushing force as digging a tunnel 6.5-7m deeper (7.5 yards). I don't know why this is totally insurmountable. Take a thick walled concrete tube, coat the outside with some sort rubber, bury the tube and pump out the air.

Yes you need to seal between sections, and keep sections aligned. I'm not a civil engineer or whatever but it doesn't seem crazy hard. It just seems like... not important. It seems a lot more expensive, and less beneficial than just making a good surface transit network. Who cares if it would let me get from Vancouver to Seattle in... half an hour? If it's already taking me an hour to get to the station and find parking, and get through ticketing/security/ customs.

It's only 2 hours from Surrey to Everett in a car (ignoring customs). Maybe we should just like have a bus?

m0darn ,

Also, if he doesn't prosecute anyone for it, then it nobody has standing to challenge it.

m0darn ,

I'm not so you were previously engaged with, and am fortunate enough to be in a similar boat to you.

I would just like to point out that in the context of having a conversation with a 13 year old, starting with working class solidarity is a good idea. I think the next step in that conversation is (for people in situations like ours) to acknowledge the factors that have led to our success, and agree that our privileges don't mean we should abandon our less fortunate peers to exploitation. We should still seek an equitable world.

m0darn ,

I think it's more likely a way to get a portion of your employees to resign without having to deal with the socio-econo-political headache of layoffs or give severance packages.

It doesn't boost productivity, but it may cut payroll.

Homophobia is literally beaten into men. Not all men obviously, but we shouldn't be surprised when some men act irrationally around wearing pink.

I haven't read the article though because of the pay wall.

My family doctor referred me to a specialist clinic.

Specialist diagnosed me and made some suggestions to me family doctor. Some medications, some counseling some organizational stuff.

The organizational stuff is what really helps but it's just the 'get organized' stuff that everybody recommends. but with the meds I'm actually able to do it.
