But since they offered to do the “installation and set-up process” with me, I relented. (The scare quotes are there because it was not an ordinary installation process: my friend basically exorcised the Manjaro out of my system.)

😃

I have a few distros I would like to try, off the top of my head: EndeavourOS, Fedora Silverblue, and NixOS.

I am not a NixOS user but I have tried it a few times and I find it really impressive for some features.
Though I feel intimidated by having to learn about more features. But the thing I find impressive so far is how to switch DEs so incredibly easy after a basic NixOS install. For example in case you're currently running XFCE4 :

  • Edit the one NixOS configuration file to define the DE you prefer on one line, say GNOME, and add some more packages you want.
  • Run the build switch command.
  • Reboot (or logout and restart the relevant Display Manager if needed)
  • Enter GNOME
  • Edit the one NixOS configuration file again, remove the GNOME line, and insert a line with KDE Plasma
  • Run the build switch command.
  • Reboot
  • Enter KDE Plasma.

It's like magic! 🐧

I still intend to show this to a Linux friend one day just for fun and sharing. And with clonezilla or rescuezilla it should be pretty easy and fast to recover from backups, show it to the friend, and then put Arch Linux back from backups.

Running Debian now (desktop, laptop, and SBCs), but my heart belongs to Slackware.

Slackware! The good old days with Pat :^) (Yeah, that smiley is (c) Patrick Volkerding)

EDPS decentralised social media pilot: the end of a successful story ( www.edps.europa.eu )

Unfortunately, despite our efforts to find a new home for EU Voice and EU Video in other EUIs, we have been unable to secure new ownership to maintain the servers and sustain operations at the high standards that EUIs and our users deserve”.

lemmyreader OP ,

The EU is still on Mastodon. https://social.network.europa.eu/@EU_Commission/112280054595900671 with 18 active users currently. I am not too keen on their content but I do see it as progress. When big names move from Tw(X)tter and other corporate silos, or at least use the alternatives like Mastodon alongside FB and so on, it can be an example for other organisations, companies and citizens to follow and use the Fediverse as well and I consider that a win.
The article was about EU Voice and EU video, the latter was with PeerTube. On the one hand I think it is a pity that they gave up, on the other hand the popularity and use of Google YouTube is enormous. It is not a monopoly but for countless people it is an addiction difficult to stay away from.

lemmyreader OP ,

Yes. I think (seen in other news) it is a shame to repeatedly see governments, companies and others say things like "We have no choice than to move to the cloud, because their offer and services are irreplaceable" where the cloud is GAFAM.
Meanwhile new data centers for Microsoft and Google are build in Europe, which maybe offers new jobs to some, but increases dependency on GAFAM. I found this article a sad story. A voice "successful" pilot but probably "never again" cause "money". But I guess the lobbying is strong in that area too, besides the easy of use of "just using YouTube". Last week I read an interview with a farmer mentioning that he and other farmers talked to high ranked EU politicians which encouraged them to keep protesting for a more sustainable agriculture but "they could not do anything for them". The farmer concluded that the lobbying by companies is very strong :(

Snikket is a simple, secure and private messaging app (based on XMPP) ( snikket.org )

For self-hosting though, the project I work on - Snikket - uses XMPP but has all the nice modern things you'd expect ready to go right out of the box, more like a Matrix (Synapse/Element) setup. Probably the biggest thing missing for Snikket right now is an official web app (we currently have Android and iOS apps)....

lemmyreader ,

Tested Snikket self-hosting in the past. If I recall correctly one advantage was that it has the option for admins to create invite links for on-boarding new users which seems useful to me for "normies".

Reddit is broken right now

#fediverse

lemmyreader ,

FWIW.They fixed the error. The old Reddit site was still up. Fediverse is the future! :)

lemmyreader ,

Fancy. And nice to see another OpenBSD one posted in a few days time :)

lemmyreader ,

use the server matrix.org like everyone (which seems to work fine).

Suggesting to use matrix.org as "everyone" uses it ? There are other choices instead of making a big flagship instance bigger.

I have a Matrix account on https://tchncs.de since years. Though I don't use it often, the admin seems to do a good job and provides bridges.

lemmyreader ,

Agreed. Nextcloud keeps turning itself in hype mode 😑 Remember their social app and "Nextcloud joins the Fediverse!". I think they even made that social app a recommended app for some time while it was barely usable. Not sure what the current state of the app is but I hear nothing about it I guess cause : new hypes!

Good that this developer speaks up. The recent XZ backdoor story is an example of lack of sustainable infrastructure and normalizing of pushing developers.

In Buddhist view: If all misfortune/suffering is deserved due to bad karma of past actions in a prior life, why advocate ahimsa/nonviolence?

A Buddhist was saying to me that anything bad that happens to someone is deserved because they must have had bad karma as a result of having done something bad, either in this life or a previous incarnation. I don't believe in any of this personally, but I think it would be helpful to understand the idea of karma a bit better,...

A Buddhist was saying to me that anything bad that happens to someone is deserved
because they must have had bad karma as a result of having done something bad,
either in this life or a previous incarnation.
By the way for context, the Buddhist person I was speaking to used this
idea of karma to defend the evils humans cause to other animals in factory farming.

Their point of view appears to conflict with the Five precepts of Buddhist lay people.

NewPipe has their own F-Droid repository for users who want faster updates.
https://newpipe.net/FAQ/tutorials/install-add-fdroid-repo/

If that is too much hassle then you can install Droidify https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.looker.droidify and simply click on NewPipe in the repository settings of Droidify but beware that Droidify does enable the IzzyOnDroid repo by default.

lemmyreader ,

IzzyOnDroid is a popular F-Droid repository. It is not bad at all, but if you don't realize that it gets enabled by default in Droidify you will have a lot more "duplicate" apps to choose from to install, and some people like myself prefer to only use apps from the main F-Droid repo when they can.

Personally I think for home users or niche there should be a snap less variant
of this distribution with all the bells and whistles.

There is : Linux Mint

lemmyreader ,

Which forums are you talking about ? Discourse based forums ? Reddit ? Lemmy ?
Reddit will shadowban Tor and VPN users immediately.
Lemmy with some exceptions should be fine is my experience. Note however that Tor circuits can change. For example, a few days in a row I had search engine results thinking I'd come from a certain country and on some sites I was offered to solve reCAPTHAs or blocked for reading things. Then since a few days search engine results think that I come from another country, and I don't have to solve reCAPTCHAs for a site where I had to before. I'm trying to say that it appears that some sites block all Tor but some sites only block some of Tor.
You can manually change the country you appear to come from with Tor browser though this is not recommended.
Using a VPN is an alternative to HYA.

lemmyreader ,

lemmy.ml does allow Tor for posting in my experience.

lemmyreader ,

You can use Mullvad VPN with Mullvad browser, it is Tor browser build by Tor project and Mullvad. Pay one month for Mullvad VPN You can even pay in cash : https://mullvad.net/en/pricing

lemmyreader ,

I just want help to find someplace that hasn’t banned it.

Okay. lemmy.ml works fine for me, never had troubles. The lemmy of Disroot probably won't block Tor.

Any specific reason to be so rude ? Didn't expect this in the friendly Selfhosted community, but I didn't read all comments.

Good call. I did not read all of the comments :/

What to be aware of before opening port 25 on a postfix Raspberry Pi?

I have a raspberry pi running postfix. I Realised unless I open port 25 I absolutely cannot receive emails (I have 587 open and can send but not receive them). However I heard there are scaries online which someone could potentially send emails from your server without consent. I believe as well my ISP doesn't block port 25. Is...

lemmyreader ,

Avoid being an open relay indeed. Some background information : https://www.postfix.org/SMTPD_ACCESS_README.html#relay But with the defaults in postfix you should be fine unless you made a lot of changes and made a mistake in it.

lemmyreader ,

If you manage to get a good SMTP relay host or authenticated SMTP account for your outgoing email then playing around with small scale self hosting email (Granted that it is not your important daily driver email accounts) can be an interesting and fun experience. But you will have to invest some time reading and tweaking and figuring things out. Slightly comparable with installing Arch Linux. Lots of people will warn you to not do it but you might learn a few valuable things on the way there.

lemmyreader ,

Which one ?

lemmyreader ,

Here it is fine for me in a browser on the desktop. Maybe your server blocked or muted something or has some configuration mistake ? Or maybe on your phone app ? Test on a few different browsers on desktop ? Try un-subcribe and then sub again ?
