Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

I'd welcome polls implementation on Lemmy but maybe this is difficult with federation ? I wouldn't mind instance only polls.

Xscreensaver has apparently been checking for updates and is disappointed that it hasn't had one for 14 months because Debian is too stable. Can anyone recommend a linux screensaver which would work with xfce and can be trusted to never do that?

Well, if you read some more of jwz's blog posts about the horrible security bugs that others have added while creating derivatives of Xscreensaver you might think twice before doing so. https://www.jwz.org/blog/2021/01/i-told-you-so-2021-edition For me a screensaver is no longer about trying to prevent dead pixels (or something like that) but being able to safely lock the screen when being away from it for a while.

Good that you mentioned that. Reminded me that I have an Arch Linux install here where I forgot that I did choose BTRFS during installation. Within maybe a month I noticed FS errors. Looked scary. Nervously searching for documentation was even more scary :

What are some free interests/things/hobbies you can do in the city?

I live alone and I'm just wasting away my time here. It's actually making me very depressed to be honest. I do live in the city which makes think there ought to be at least something to do out here. Though I can't really afford to spent money on it every day....

  • The city where I live in has several few Little libraries that people have in their garden or hanging at the wall of their home. And I know that other cities have them as well. Today I went biking and brought back two books and I was pretty sure that I did not want to take any because I have more than enough to read, but I noticed an interesting book and took it home. This is something you can do yourself. Build a small wooden box, and have other people put or take books. You don't have to do this yourself, you could ask friends, family and co-workers to help you build it or ask them to provide such. Then you could take a little bit care of it and promote the idea.

  • What I like about bigger cities are public parks. I like to go to parks and just sit, listen to birds, enjoy the green and in Springtime, Summer and Autumn enjoy the colors.

  • Public libraries here have magazines and books to read for any visitors. I've learned about open source software thanks to the Internet but also a little bit thanks to public libraries. I find that reading paper books or magazine can also be a nice break from staring at a screen of a device.

Well, yes, I prefer desktop. But you know, in some countries some people have nothing else than phones. I am glad that Mullvad has posted this and hopefully Google can fix the bugs soon.

All fine. Your comment where you mentioned autistic suddenly made me "understand" the let-s-call-them misunderstandings in this thread. And I agree about the toxic world, but we're all in the same boat, so I'd say we may as well be nice to each other at least a few seconds per day. Sometimes small things can make a big difference.

UNIX(tm) is a trademark name (Think of e.g. IBM AIX, HP-UX, SunOS). Linux and BSD are Unix alike. I believe that Apple has made an effort to be entitled to call an OS of theirs UNIX, not sure whether it's Darwin or something else.

Appreciated your post very much. Thank you! In a society and Internet where rational thinking is extremely common, it is, at least for me, unusual to come across these kind of public posts. I can, to some extent, relate to the actual content and it does remind me of an old friend (RIP) who told me a memorable anecdote about his moments of clairvoyance. It also reminds me what I've read in several books : Children grow up and almost always parents tell them to shut up about their imaginary friends or the colors around persons they see. And that is actually not that very bad because in order to "survive" in society and to cope with all the impulses that our senses have to deal with it is useful to be able to filter some of the input. It should however imho not make the world even more rational than we need to.

Yes, what would possibly go wrong ? And OpenSSL is only a small and unimportant project and hardly anyone depends on it, right ? Right ? I can dig that they want to get rid of some of their own services but completely giving up on their own git repository ? Let's hope they do mirror the source code on Codeberg or sourcehut.

Mastodon is about micro-blogging, with text, images and videos. PixelFed is only about images which can have a short or longer description. There's Loops, a work in progress, which will enable short videos for PixelFed. If you would follow others on PixelFed from your PixelFed account you'd only see images.

I never understood this argument. How is it any different for leftist propaganda? This just feels like telling someone to stop thinking because you’re on our team now and we want to make sure you don’t leave.

Your argument seems to suggest :

  • Listening to far right voices is not too bad if you keep being alert.
  • The brain of the listener who thinks for themselves will be strong enough to distinguish leftist propaganda and lies from facts and truth.

I fear, looking at the millions of people who are not well informed about some things (say privacy + GAFAM), that this is wishful thinking. Remember the experiment with people in the cinemas where some soft-drink images were almost invisible merged into the movie and made people thirsty and buy more drinks during the break ? In my opinion the human brain is unfortunately not as powerful as people make it believe it is. And I have no big issues in general with leftist propaganda as I'd like to see the planet saved rather than destroyed.
