Snikket is a simple, secure and private messaging app (based on XMPP) ( snikket.org )

For self-hosting though, the project I work on - Snikket - uses XMPP but has all the nice modern things you'd expect ready to go right out of the box, more like a Matrix (Synapse/Element) setup. Probably the biggest thing missing for Snikket right now is an official web app (we currently have Android and iOS apps)....

I wonder how does this differ from plain XMPP? There are tons of XMPP clients for every imaginable device, includong browser ones.

We have hundreds of Samsung 860/870 EVOs in operation at my work now. All of them are working reliably in both windows and linux machines running 24/7 for years. Some more heavily used (local postgres db) are probably not in the best condition, but still working. Speaking of mostly 250 GB ones.

We used to buy OCZ brand. First OCZs (Vertex 3) were amazing, some of them are still in work for 10+ years. Vertex 460 still great, again, some are still in use. But ever since Toshiba came in and old models were replaced with Trion models, it went to shit. Some of those models in the same environment started to fail (and I mean critical failures, like no OS after reboot or missing data etc.) after less than a year. Some of them still run in less critical PCs with light use, but do I trust the brand? Hell no.

I just checked one 250 GB OCZ Vertex 3 running for ~10 years with Crystaldisk. It has over 220 TB written, 300 TB read, and crystaldisk still shows roughly 40% lifetime left. It ran in badly wented, really dusty Dell Optiplex with Windows XP.

Edit: Personally I also have good experience with Crucial/Micron too, but that's just based on home use for storing music, documents, steam games and not much else.

Maybe move to somewhere not capitalist then?

I'm so sad what happened to Slovakia. With Pellegrinis win it's now oficially run 100% by state mafia :-(

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

I know that and that's why I'm so sad about it. Some of my best friends are from Slovakia and they feel exactly like you - despair.

Isn't it like that 90% of christians are actually Roman Catholics there?

I bet you're Johny Sins level doctor! Which means expert obviously.

I'm old fashioned so all my books are physical for now. I used to hate on ereaders (first Kindle), but as I'm older, sight gets worse, readers get better (hopefully) and space is also an issue I'm already thinking of buying one. But which one? That is the question. I'd prefer something simple, without online nonsense, where I can put my files too (e.g. local library puts out PDFs of royalty-free classics for free).

Reminds me of this gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp-pU8TFsg0

Back on topic. I believe this is opt-out in my country (if it didn't change recently), so unless you specifically state that you want all your organs inside to feed the worms or to get more ash for your urn, you're automatically possible donor.

EDIT: Just checked, it's still opt-out. It's opt-in only for minors and incapacitated - their parents/legal representative have to agree.

It's the boob constant. The bigger the boobs are the more they stick out getting you better place in race...

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

I would recommend browsing the interwebz. There are a lot of websites dedicated to boobs and other jiggly parts where you can study said constant pretty thoroughly.

There are options to buy gas without ethanol in my country. It's expensive, but everyone owning some old school vehicle buys these exactly for long pauses without actually driving the car.

Wtf did I just read? Have you ever been to Russia or any of the post-soviet block republic? Or are you just fantasizing from other side of the world?

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

It's interesting how original Hurt by NiN has very different vibes than its cover by Johnny Cash. It's like it's different song, but still the same. Both deep, just different.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Ever since I have my own children Zombie by The Cranberries hits twice as hard.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

How long Russia can maintain it is another question. When most of your produce is intended to get destroyed in near future with nothing in return, you're basically throwing money out of the window.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Oh, boy, they most certainly deserve the hate. This article sums it up pretty well: https://www.grunge.com/51980/nickelback-became-hated-band-music-industry/

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Some valid points? Some? Well, yeah, there are some that probably could be omitted, but most stands strong.

Maybe I'm biased as I listen to more or less different genres, but there's nothing wrong on hating on Nickelback.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy rock music (among others), but assholes like Nickelback are making terrible example of it. When someone asks me what I listen to and I reply "rock music" the person often reply along the lines of "ah, ok, like Nickelback?" And that's just disgusting.

I don't actively hate on them posting shit on the internet on my own or marching with antiNickelback sign in RL, but when someone asks or when discussion revolves around, I tell him I hate the band.

Being successful musician has nothing to do with it. People like Kanye or Taylor Swift made way more money with their (IMO shitty) music, but I don't hate them as Nickelback. Because they (probably, or at least not that obviously) don't ruin the genre they perform in.

Edit: Half of what I want to say is probably lost in translation as English is not my native language, so I can't make all the nuances I would do in my language.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

That sounds absolutely terrible. But calling it almond & honey cake instead of pizza (and omitting the chicken) might solve the problem.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

I hate these post containing only youtube link. I'm interested in the matter, but often times I can't simply play video be it youtube or piped/invidious. Why is it so difficult to past at least short resume, TL;DW, ... ?

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

I'm the opposite. I only read fiction, both scifi and fantasy and everything in between, because why read something else? I love imagination possibilities of authors that can put something crazy in, something you simply can't get in non-fiction literature. Why read "boring" stuff that can (have/did) happen to everyone in normal life?

I know I'm exaggerating, but I hope you know what I mean. And I highly recommend Discworld.

PS: I believe Discworld is not for everyone because it's British with their style of humour baked in. If you don't like Monty Python, Red Dwarf, IT Crowd or other British shows, you probably won't enjoy Discworld either.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

What is considered power metal nowadays? Helloween? Manowar? Or something completely different?

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Well, never heard of any of these. I kind of stopped listening to this sub-genre in 90s, same with heavy and speed, it's all too "whiny" and "high-pitched" for my taste and ears if you get what I mean. Singers usually push really hard and guitars are either constantly soloing or shredding too high and that makes me uncomfortable nowadays.

But the best part is, there's so much to pick from these days everyone should get satisfied.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah, that didn't cross my mind, but it's definitely true!

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Well, I do read quite bit of articles about history or technical progress, but not really whole books. IDK why, it just feels different for me and while articles are ok, I feel like book is too much. So books are almost exclusively fiction for me.

kurcatovium ,

Igorrr is insane but great. I recommend the chicken song, crazy stuff...

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Yes, exactly this.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

I still do use a few. First one is local one about bass guitars, mainly going there for the great community. Second is another local about PC and hardware. Now thinking about it, I rarely visit others.

Does being lonely due to war and it's trauma count? If yes, I can highly recommend old soviet movie Come and See - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/
Just don't get discouraged by country of origin, it has no effect on the movie.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

Indeed it is. It shows how brutal war really is. It's even more relevant today.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

So is the movie. It's really intense though. I mean really. It shows all the filth of war. And despite "hero" (a boy) is almost always among other people, he's in fact really lonely. Especially in his misery.

kurcatovium ,

I've read it too (a long time ago, in a galaxy far... ehm, you know what I mean). I remember it was pretty good and interesting read. This sarcasm is more like a joke - when OP asks why superpowers can't get along, just recommend book about warfare and getting upper hand on your enemy.

The more I discover about US election system the more confused I am, lol. This is like some form of centuries old comedy and not like current event real president may come from.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

It depends on how expensive it is.

I remember when SSDs came out they were horribly expensive to the point no sane non-billionaire customer would even consider one. And look at the prices now.

kurcatovium ,
@kurcatovium@lemm.ee avatar

You should redo them then.

I claim every free game Epic offers, not because I actually want to play them. I claim all those games because it costs Epic money. And that is my goal.
