@paninid @bookstodon They do it because they can. It’s a show of dominance. I don’t like that subject (civil rights, racism, science) so I’m going to flex my power and make sure that no one reads books on those topics. All while protecting the Confederate rag and statues.

A appeals court reversed the conviction of , a Black woman, who had been sentenced to 5 yrs in prison on a charge of illegally voting in 2016, acquitting her in a case that attys cast as part of a broader fight for .
Mason voted w/a provisional ballot in 2016 but did not know she was ineligible to do so. The ballot WAS NOT COUNTED, but she was convicted in 2018.

    Born in 1885, Clara Belle Williams became the 1st Black graduate of New Mexico College of Agriculture & Mechanic Arts (now NMSU).

    While a student, many professors did not allow her into lecture halls so she took notes from the hallway. When she graduated in 1937, commencement ceremonies were canceled bc a group of students refused to walk with her.
