I guess is must be hot. I've had to fill the water feeders for my ants after just 3 days and normally it lasts them a week. They are getting better about getting off of the feeder when I need to remove it. (I can't refill it if it's covered in ants and there is no way to explain this to them. So I just tap it to scare them off.)

I think I'll need to give them each two water feeders just to be safe. (No water harms ants faster than anything. They could last a week maybe two without food.)

@futurebird do they use water for cooling or do they lose it simply because of the heat? Or, is it evaporating faster?

If you see a new youTube channel with a plain sounding name like "NatureView" or "BrightScience" etc. and there is what looks like a tempting video on a specific education topic "Most Active Volcanoes" or "Incredible Carnivorous Plants"

There is a 50/50 chance it will be a generated voice with stock footage and a script written by GPT.

I am now avoiding videos if I don't recognize the creator, or don't see signs it was made by a person.

@futurebird it’s technological nepotism. Its owners have promoted it even though it’s incompetent. And they won’t hear anything bad about it no matter how loudly we yell. But, this nepobaby is coming after the jobs of thought workers which had been much safer in the past. Company leaders not caring whether the answers are right are info terrorists. They are the flat earthers of tech. They are bullies and should be treated as such.

Billionaires aren’t just supporting Trump for the tax cuts.

As Peter Thiel once admitted: “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.”

Make no mistake: The goal of American oligarchy is to tear down democracy itself.

hoco ,
@hoco@tribe.net avatar

@rbreich if what he means by freedom is “do anything you want, destroy the lives of others and the planet, evade all accountability and take all the money, then he’s right. That kind of freedom is indeed incompatible with democracy.

The verdict may not matter to Trump's base, but I do think there is a group of people it matters to who are being overlooked: the people who were already likely to vote for Biden.

A Trump acquittal would have sapped trust in legal systems and government further. It would fueled apathy. Hopelessness and apathy can reelect Trump.

    Why is anti-vax content so popular. Looking at places like Fox news, Rogan, others who fed into that content (and made it more legitimate seeming to many people) the only reason I can detect to make such content is that it's popular with a segment of the population.

    So, that explains why people make it. To make money.

    But why is it "popular" ?

    hoco ,
    @hoco@tribe.net avatar

    @futurebird I think it is because many people fear needles, and one of the best ways to get people to give you money is to play on their fears.

    Tesla has made a ridiculous design change, adding turn signal buttons that might force drivers to take their eyes off the road. This is clearly dangerous and completely unnecessary. So how is it even legal?!

    That’s what happens when stupid, senseless billionaires such as Elon Musk are in charge of everything. Because men like him are in control of all our major industries plus virtually all commerce, finance, and media — along with the politicians who are supposed to regulate stuff (but don’t) — they can do anything they want. Even if it is clearly dangerous and completely unnecessary.

    Welcome to late-stage capitalism.

    A few days ago, we focused on the fraudulent scheme of plastic recycling. It does not work, it never has worked, and it never will.

    The oil industry, which produces millions of tons of plastics every year and makes HUGE profits from it, has known all along that recycling doesn't do any good — yet they continue promoting the idea.

    So should we just quit? That's the question asked by a new article at Salon.

    "Plastic experts say recycling is a scam. Should we even do it anymore?"

    Erica Cirino, communications manager at the Plastic Pollution Coalition, says, "Plastic recycling rates vary widely from region to region around the world. In the U.S., plastic recycling rates are currently below 6 percent."

    Yet even those numbers are deceptive, Cirino warned, as they incorrectly imply that at least the plastic which does get 'recycled' is handled in ways that help the environment.

    "Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter where or how you set out your plastic for recycling collection, whether at the end of your driveway, at your local recycling center, or in a municipal recycling bin: Most plastic items collected as recycling are not actually recycled," Cirino explained. "Surprisingly, plastic is not designed to be recycled — despite industries and governments telling the public that we should recycle plastic."

    Instead the plastics that people think get 'recycled' are often instead shipped from the Global North to the Global South, with waste haulers often dumping and openly burning plastic without regard to environmental laws, Cirino explained. People who live near the sites where these things happen face a lifetime of health risks, to say nothing of living in a degraded environment.

    Indeed, a compelling question arises from the fact that the crusade to recycle plastic is more corporate propaganda than true Earth-saving measure: Should we recycle plastic at all?

    "No," Cirino told Salon. "Even if plastic recycling rates were higher, recycling alone could never come close to solving the serious and wide-ranging health, justice, socio-economic, and environmental crises caused by industries’ continued plastic production and plastic pollution, which go hand in hand." Cirino argued that, given how plastic production has grown exponentially and its pollution problems have likewise worsened, emphasizing recycling over meaningful solutions is at best irresponsible.

    "It’s clear recycling is not enough to solve the plastic pollution crisis," Cirino concluded. "The fossil fuel industry, governments, and corporations really need to turn off the plastic tap. Ultimately, our world must decide what it values: money or life."

    @breadandcircuses In my area only #1 and #2 plastic is collected for recycling. None of the others kinds of plastic are accepted. Unfortunately the article makes no distinction between the different kinds of plastic, so I can only assume they mean each and every single kind of plastic used in packaging. I would have preferred the article to talk about it in more detail instead of treating all plastic uniformly. Perhaps even #1 and #2 plastics are not recycled either. I'm left wondering.
