Russia can then ingest Ukraine, continue to seed political distrust in Western countries and then potentially start another war in Europe a few years later.

Holy shit this is the most mapgame-brained comment of all time. You mean Russia will get enough war score to annex Ukrainian territories, wait a few years for aggressive expansion to die down, spend some admin points to press the "sow discontent" button, then war when the casus belli is ready? Like a classic EU4 blob?

Stop gaming and read some books.

Ok, I'll bite

  1. How has Russia invaded Transnistria? Transnistria was a breakaway region during the collapse of the Soviet union, similar to Gagauzia
  2. No one disputes that Chechnya is Russian territory. Russia cannot invade its own territory.
  3. Georgian military intended to genocide ethnic minorities. Russia supported the autonomy of said minorities.
  4. Crimea was given to Ukraine by Kruschev very recently. It is almost entirely ethnically Russian, and those ethnic Russians voted overwhelmingly to secede during a coup/constitutional crisis as the alternative was staying in a country where there culture and language are banned, or worse become the target of hate crimes from neo-nazi battalions as many cases are well-documented

New to linux. I tried this same thing in a virtual machine. I got a lot of stuff to work, but it seems like any services and daemons have to be installed on xbps because the ones from nix can't be enabled for Runit, or at least require doing that in a different way. So I would install those services through XBPS and everything else with Nix-Env which was enough to get a WM up, but I kept running into issues installing other things.

Now I'm running Void directly on my computer and I'm sticking to XBPS and so far it has gone a lot smoother, but I've heard about this Void + Nix thing a lot, but never really seen mentioned what the recommended approach to that is

Ok, that's sort of what I figured. I'll probably do that going forward. Thanks

This should apply to Windows 10 as well right? How soon will this take affect?

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I've realized that in conversations I'll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I've been thinking that it's not as inclusive to women/trans people....

This is making me reassess Russia's prospects in an all out war with NATO. If they can't supply Ukraine alone as it is, how will they supply a war machine for an entire continent when trade is even more limited?

"Certified nationalist" comes from Al Jazeera. He was a straight up Nazi, and Russia has claimed its goal is denazification after the Nazis killed 40 million of their people in living memory and there are somehow still people there who think Nazi ideas are good, they have no excuse. Who knows the circumstances of how he died, but lets not forget the CIA tried to kill Julian Assange, that's a confirmed fact about the US empire. The US empire will murder not to protect their people from Nazi thugs but to preserve their tyranny while Russia protects people like Snowden.

The US getting held accountable for it's war crimes? Sounds too good to be true.

gun ,
@gun@lemmy.ml avatar

They are not nearly as large or as capable as what the US has though

gun ,
@gun@lemmy.ml avatar

If it was that simple, the US would have stopped producing missiles and warheads a long time ago

gun ,
@gun@lemmy.ml avatar

That's misleading at best. W76-2 began production a few years ago. B61-12 recently began production with B61-13 on the way. The current US stockpile may be down from its cold war height in bare numbers, but that's not the point. The US is always improving its nuclear technology and refitting, upgrading, or re-manufacturing its existing stockpile. Clearly "wiping out humanity" is not enough.

No way a long list of Western media outfits who also lied about Iraq until we went to war with them are lying again?? That's Crazy!!

gun ,
@gun@lemmy.ml avatar

Nah, they hyped up the weapons of mass destruction claim same as everyone.

Meanwhile suspicion is growing that Iraq might actually be actively producing mass weapons of destruction.

The German daily, "Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung" reported recently about a new nuclear programme. Relying on trustworthy reports of the Federal German News Service (BND) from January, the newspaper said that Iraq was buying "nuclear relevant basic chemicals".

Intelligence sources had also found indications that Iraq is continuing with its "Bio-Toxin-Programme" and is "building a mobile B-weapons capacity", the newspaper said.

This could mean that Iraq could achieve the high nuclear status of 1990.

Users need an option to block instances

browsing through All has so much pro-fascist posts coming from lemmygrad that it drowns out all the other instances. I'm surprised they're even federated by default but we should have an option to block instances from All if lemmy is deadset on federating with them just because they are fascists with a red and yellow flag......

I support this feature. But Wikipedia is not an authority on what fascism is. The dictionary attempts to describe the usage of a word in this case as it relates to an objective phenomenon. Before we can attempt this description, an understanding of the objective phenomenon must be had. We can rely on definitions for understood phenomena like water, jogging, or birds. But what exactly fascism is is a hotly debated topic, not a well understood phenomenon that we hold absolute knowledge and certainty of. Even your dictionary source admits it is a characterization of fascism, not exactly a definition.

A conservative will reason discursively that Hitler was a leftist, because the Left can be defined as more government, so Fascism is far left. In the same way, that buzzfeed employee could argue their own view of what misogyny is. To them, when a man spreads their legs in public, this is the sexist act of manspreading.

What these people (and you) are doing is taking a word that has a strongly negative connotation, arguing for an expanded categorization of this word in an attempt to rub off that connotation on something else. But all this succeeds in doing is devaluing said word.

Fascism has a negative connotation because its consequence was the death of 60-100 million people. That has nothing to do with Bernie supporters wanting to give people free healthcare. The "more government" connection (what even does 'more government' mean?) has to be proven more than circumstantial. Likewise, sexism has a negative connotation because of rape, women in the past not having basic rights like the right to vote, etc. But a man letting his balls get some air has nothing to do with that, even if people find it a little rude.

They have algebraically replaced a world phenomenon with a term, much like a mathematician replaces a quantity with the letter 'X' on paper. Then they have discursively reasoned using the term, not the phenomenon. You can find the length of a square's side from the root of the area. We have a square that is 4 cm^2^. So what is √4? Math tells us that it is ±2. So a square in real life can have a negative length? This is the lunacy that you will accept with analytical reasoning if you do not understand its premises.

So instead of lazily giving us a definition full of nebulous terms, why not prove to me that any similarities between modern Russia and the Fascist countries are more than circumstantial? What is the unity behind these particular examples? All states are militaristic. All states suppress real opposition. Authoritarianism is no realer than the boogeyman. Russia does not have a "strong regimentation of society" so you're just flat out wrong there.
