30 min #backyardbirding - The recently born young birds are moving around in nature. They are loud and easy to spot, as they are not so careful yet. This ChiffChaff was moving closely around me, calling loudly -often moving carelessly to the edge of the branches - while a Red Kite was circling above the gardens of the street.
Brown Thrasher at home. This is the first year I've seen these birds at feeders. Usually they are on the ground, thrashing violently in their search for insects.
Happy Friday! White-throated sparrow at home. This one seemed to have a really vivid contrast between the black and white head stripes, or maybe it is the yellow on the head that caught my attention. Whatever the reason, I took many photos of this bird and here's one of them : )
And 2 days ago I got surprised by a Merlin flying by. I hardly knew they existed, not realising with the English bird name "Merlin" stood for. So the rest of the day I was stuck, thinking about the bird I had seen 🙂.
#backyardbirding bird nr. 95 (in all) btw. 🥳
Who knows, I might live to see a hundred!
Cat birds! More first time IRL specimens for me this week. The super dark one is super unique, and was the first to show up. They seem to enjoy the cuties I put out for the Oriels. They only hung out for a day or so.
Today is the most ridiculous day for #BackyardBirding! First a rose-breasted grosbeak at our feeder (first time we’ve seen one IRL), then a full-color goldfinch, and just now a Baltimore oriole showed up at the hummingbird feeder. First time getting photos of a BO. YAYYY 🤩
Also, Mr and Mrs Bluey (our eastern bluebird couple) have been hanging out, too.
Took the camera out for this golden-crowned sparrow today but every angle on em had foliage in the way! The pair of chestnut-backed chickadees were much more generous in their poses :)
My morning #backyardbirding started off very well with 17 bird species in 8 minutes, including a Crane and 3 eur. Jays flying by.
Then it became quieter ending with 25 species in all after one hour.
I then wanted to check a bird sound I recorded during that hour, but I can't find the cable to the recorder, and my computer is too old for the memory card... I know my oldest has used it ... but I can't find it... so...
I put some sheep’s wool in this old terracotta apple bird feeder that I can see from my dining table while I work…not a distraction at all of course!
The goldfinches in particular are most partial. Also great tits. Greenfinches and others seem to prefer the wool in a cage feeder on another tree.
Anyway, lots of cozy bird nests up and down our street are hopefully keeping eggs and baby birds warm and dry in this miserable wet weather we’re having (still!).
One of the Carolina Wrens around home ... I peeked out the front door to get a photo of this one. There was a nest of the critters in this tree last year, let's hope there is a repeat.
Monday they spent most of the morning perched or nest building. By afternoon they were gone and didn’t come back.
Yesterday I didn’t see them at all.
Today they are back but not working on their nest or even going into the box that often. They are just hanging out in the area. If prior experience holds, I’m guessing they will be gone in a few hours. #birding#Missouri#backyardbirding
