I sincerely have no idea what he's saying here. Police have a kind of immunity. The Church insulates priests from consequences which is also functions as a kind of immunity. These things are widely recognized to be a problem. They are "justified" by the stature and supposed level of responsibility required to do these jobs. The justification is thin and our efforts to dissolve immunity are righteous.

So, why bring them up?

@futurebird I think, unfortunately, that this is widespread and not just a Trump person problem.

See the general reaction to Large Language Models (AI). It's all about feel and facts aren't terribly relevant.

Hollie just got up and went into the kitchen. Finn here is like, “Excuse me, madam! I believe I was receiving belly rubs.”

    WTAF!

"U.S. intelligence officials are planning to brief #Trump on national security matters if he secures the GOP nomination this summer — despite concerns about his handling of classified information.

The decision would be in keeping with a tradition that dates back to 1952, but it would mark the first time an admin has volunteered to share classified information with a candidate who is facing criminal charges on charges that he mishandled classified documents." https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/07/biden-intel-briefings-trump-00145651

@GottaLaff @nonproductive He wasn't denied before. He got classified briefings in 2016. See: <https://time.com/4430630/donald-trump-hillary-clinton-presidential-candidate-intelligence-briefings/>

What has happened since is that Biden chose not to preserve his security clearance after losing in 2020, which is an entirely different thing. We customarily allow former presidents to keep security clearances so they can be consulted on secret things, but this is different from the national security briefings given presidential candidates.

Question for @histodons In literature there is often reference to a character having £1000/yr or whatever amount, presumably proceeds from an estate, rents etc, but how was it paid and how often? How did that economy actually work day to day.

@PedalHoppy @histodons a lot of this was from annuities. The navy needed a new ship, so the government would sell an annuity for 5% a year for life. Someone invests 20000 pounds, they get 1000/year.

These were generally paid quarterly and tradespeople were expected to extend credit (keep a tab) and paid each quarter with a bank draft.

So day-to-day the peerage didn’t handle money much.

OH SURE, let's do a daylight savings change right at midnight on a leap day. AND combine two time zone regions into one at the same time.

Kazakhstan is really trying as hard as they can to test every aspect of your date/time code tomorrow.

@poe1178 @GottaLaff Not really! Kushner was given $2 billion to manage by the Saudi royal family. So he can certainly make a ton of money by buying and selling securities with it and skimming off fees, but it's ultimately not his money and the Saudi's can fire him or just withdraw their money from the fund whenever they want.
