Question for @histodons In literature there is often reference to a character having £1000/yr or whatever amount, presumably proceeds from an estate, rents etc, but how was it paid and how often? How did that economy actually work day to day.

@gregtitus @histodons Thank you. It’s one of those bits of assumed knowledge that just evaporates over time. It’s such a big part of 18th and 19th century lit that I have just glossed over. Then a question came up and I discovered I didn’t have a clue.

Imagine... a "Science News Channel" with summaries of papers, interesting controversies, engaging and challenging debates. Tie ins to pop culture, and the rest of the news.

And a magic protective spell cast on it so it won't develop "History Channel Syndrome" or "TLC Degeneracy Disorder"

Think about how good it could be if done right. And that means if it was serious about informing the public, and if it went deep into all the little obscure fields.

It could be so amazing.

@futurebird There are a number of very good audio programs that have been doing just this for decades. CBC Quirks and Quarks, BBC Inside Science, Discovery (Aus) There are others. There is lots of duplication as they often cover the same big stories but as they are public broadcasters they find the scientists from their countries to interview who are doing really interesting research.
