Not wanting to learn or not wanting to drive?

Knowing how to drive is a useful skill that can come in handy (vacations, emergency) even if you don't do it regularly.

Refusing to drive daily - absolutely, for political, social and economic end ecological reasons. Everyone living in range of an acceptable public transport should refuse to drive. And those who are not should not stop pressuring and voting local politicians to implement one. It's 2024, there's no reason to depend on cars for everyday transportation.

Bought - it's been 15 years at least.
Got one for free and used it actively - last month. Tourist organizations in many cities still give away simple paper maps of city center with major sights (and some advertising).

Why Assassin's Creed has lost its identity?

Remember those iconic games before 2014? The OG, while dated was really unique for its time, the Ezio Auditore Trilogy that became the standard for the franchise, 3, that was very ambitious (probably too much) with it's setting and story telling. Even 4, although it was the first time AC escaped from the base of what an...

There's only so much content you can milk out of a single franchise. After a while it becomes tired and repetitive, or strays in bad direction. Very few franchises continue for so long for a reason.

Unless Ubisoft is trying to create Coronation Street equivalent of video games.

Does Trump being found guilty actually matter?

Since he can still run for office and become president while in prison, is this actually going to do anything to stop him from being president? Obviously it's not gonna sway anyone who's gonna vote for him, so is there any actual way this keeps him from office, or at least has some positive effect for us? I wanna join the...

flamingo_pinyata ,

If he goes to prison and then gets elected president, how does it work? Will he be pronounced incapable of performing the office, do the job from prison, or get released?

Dating.
I don't see the point to it, faking that you like someone so your friends and family approve.

If you owned a magic library people donated to in order to preserve media for eternity but which was going through overpopulation, what criteria would you use to decide which media survived/discarded?

I was reading a recent article about the efforts by people not to ban books. While I think the sentiment is good-natured, as a helper at my local library, this is actually very problematic. People donate to us all the time, as is how libraries work. Sometimes the books are unpopular, unproductive, harmful, or just low tier....

  1. Drop accounting and commercial transaction documents. Invoices, receipts, shipping declarations, etc... Sure it could be interesting to future archeologists but it makes the huge majority of all documents generated by humanity. We still have millions of untranslated accounting docs from ancient Mesopotàmia. It not really that useful.

  2. Content published in less than 1000 copies, or read/watched less than 1000 times if online. Fanfiction, self published books and so on. Again it's a loss for a couple of niche future historians. You drop a significant % of storage, but even minor works representing our society remain.

I really don't get the Nazi belief system.

  1. Some races are superior to others and naturally must rule
  2. Despite all persecutions, Jews are immensely powerful and secretly control the world

According to their own philosophy they should be willingly serving the superior race - Jews

DDG and Ecosia both use Bing as a provider for some of their results.
Something is currently broken on the side of Bing, and none of the search engines that use it as a source is able to get any results.

flamingo_pinyata ,

According to this, it started as a full outage, but by now Bing itself is mostly fixed only leaving the the API down.

Still no definitive news. Iranians have misplaced their president.

Most large-scale attempts at communism were managed in a centralized way top-down by force.
One strong leader, usually with a cult of personality. Glorification of the military. Devaluation of individual life and emphasis on sacrifice for the common good. Suppression of dissent by violence.

You can see the parallels with fascism. I'd even argue that what we know as communism and fascism mainly differ in their approach to the economy.

On the other hand, capitalism exists and thrives in chaos. It doesn't exclude authoritarianism - actually it tends to produce it when capitalists capture the government. But some capitalist countries manage not to slide all the way and have been keeping up some kind of freedom for decades, so it kinda works.

Let me guess, you're an American who has never been outside of the USA, never read anything about other countries, and believes 'Murica is the greatest one forever and only one that matters (even in evil)

No matter what so many people say, it's not mandatory to have a partner!

Invest your effort in figuring out how to live with yourself. Build a life worth living on your own.
A right person might come, or not. But at least you didn't waste your life chasing wrong goals.

flamingo_pinyata ,

Unfortunately I'm writing from personal experience.

After too many years I don't think I'll ever find anyone.
But accepting it was a relief. It's terrifyingly lonely at times, but at least I'm not suicidal any more. And I understand who I am and what is my way of life.

I can't understate the benefits of understanding oneself can have on mental health.

Why are Baltic and Nordic peoples still Christian? Why are Berbers still Muslim? Etc...

At some point the violence of conquest, colonialism and enforced religion is forgotten. And the new social structure becomes accepted and enforced internally like it's the only natural way to do things.

Vatnik found a way around Catch 22. Pretty creative if you ask me.

Why are Asian products so often wrapped in really *thick* plastics?

I live in Europe but sometimes shop at Asian supermarkets here. One of the things I notice with almost everything I buy there is that plastic packaging feels a lot thicker than that on European products. Is there a rational reason for this? Are plastics simply cheaper? Or do people worry more that products might spoil? Are these...

flamingo_pinyata ,

Are those products imported from Asia?
If so the transport might require packaging them to survive the trip.

flamingo_pinyata ,

tbh, up to 80 years ago Europeans were in constant war as well and nobody else drew their borders
EU had to be created to finally stop French and Germans from killing each other

Do you have favorites or specific list preferences about trivial things like color or music?

I always feel awkward when asked my favorite color, song, or any other type of trivial question. I have my standard responses I remain consistent with over time, but they are only consistent lies. Are those types of questions fundamentally awkward to you too?...

flamingo_pinyata ,

I understand these questions as conversation openers rather than actual questions.
Having one "favorite" anything let alone something as vague as a color, is impossible. And the person asking doesn't really want a specific answer, they just don't know what to say so they also follow a scripted questions they've heard before.

So I will respond with something like "I listen mostly to Genre A and Genre B. I've been to the concert of Band Z recently. What's the latest concert you've been to?"
Or "I try to wear bright colors in the winter, to try and compensate for the gray days and cold nights"

Something related to the opening question but doesn't have to be a singular answer. More like your general opinion on colors followed by a question so the other person has something to latch onto for their turn in conversation.

flamingo_pinyata ,

I used to think the same, but came to think small talk is kind of useful. Even though I'm not good at it.

  • Hey fellow human, I acknowledge your existence and wish to interact with you
  • Thank you fellow human, I also can't dedicate mental and emotional capacity for a deeper conversation but still wish to interact with you...

Big pro for Organic Maps is rendering speed. So smooth and perfect...
Everything else is on the OsmAnd side. It's loaded with features, everything you may want and more. But rendering lag is so annoying that I'm using Organic by default.

Google suspends Gemini from making AI images of people after a backlash complaining it was 'woke' ( www.businessinsider.com )

Google suspends Gemini from making AI images of people after a backlash complaining it was 'woke'::After users complained Google's Gemini had gone "woke," the company said it will pause the image-generating feature of people while working on fixes.

flamingo_pinyata ,

Actually Google made a huge success by training an AI to ignore personal characteristics like skin color or gender when generating images. It uses a "generic human average", and that's awesome!
Normally models like these replicate categorization by (racial/gender) categories of the society it created them.

Gemini completely misses categorization by these features. Of course it also loses the contemporary context, because the concepts of race & gender still impacts most of humanity.

But for what it is it's a huge success.

flamingo_pinyata ,

That is exactly their goal. They openly state it, and I respect them for that.
Federating with others was never really what they wanted. It's a semi-private discussion space with strict rules.

Can Taylor Swift help Canada's seal meat industry, senate committee asks ( ottawacitizen.com )

Previous government efforts to boost the sale of seal products have also failed, noted Fink. As an example, she pointed to a 2014 plan which recommended the Fisheries and Oceans department try to revive the market for the sale of seal penises.

flamingo_pinyata ,

Is the simulation collapsing into a Swift-ularity?

Certainly seems so.
Taylor Swift is the only important person in the world according to the news.

I mean I like her music, but if you asked me a couple of years ago who's going to be shaking the world in 2024, definitely wouldn't say Taylor Swift.

Any mass expulsion is an attempted genocide (or successful in many cases).
So many people aren't going to drop everything and leave their homes unless something worse is implied if they choose to stay.

Have you ever used a delayed start on a washing machine? If so welcome to home automation.
I'm only half joking - many home devices already have some timer based functions.

The next step is to be able to program them in a more complex way together.
Like - I want my laundry to be finished 15 min before I come home. At the same time water heater should come on so there is enough hot water for a shower later.

Exhaust and noise are still a problem. It won't do much on a climate level, but even if we manage to reduce car usage having the remaining cars be electric is useful.
Both noise pollution and particulate pollution have negative effects on human health.

Maybe it's just my bubble but most climate activists I see are primarily pushing for renewable electricity generation, and consumption reduction across the board in all aspects of life.
They are usually also against cars generally but it's a secondary subject.

Jesus also spent some time in jail.

If you use 72% of a cross is it still a crucifiction? That's like both arms and one foot nailed.

Iconic Manhattan skyscrapers - Empire State Building for sure. Regardless of societal changes it will become a protected cultural heritage.

Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest - it's just too big. Nobody likes it but but demolishing would be too expensive. I expect this situation to continue forever.

Eiffel Tower - another iconic landmark. And very simple to keep maintained as long as you have enough steel. If it gets destroyed for whatever reason, Parisians will rebuild it.

Sea reclamation structures in the Netherlands - Especially those built during 20th century. Even if active mechanisms fall out of use, it will remain around as a ruin of ancient civilization for a long time
