you learn something new every day in #GameDev

so in kitsune tails we put in a mode for beginners at platformers (or people who just don't have the time to feel frustrated at games anymore) where if you die you respawn immediately floating on a little cloud that despawns after a couple of seconds. you know, kinda like old coop arcade games

what nobody on our team expected was that a common problem for beginners would be not knowing that the cloud can be steered around to fly you to safety, leading to complaints that jumping off the cloud just killed you again and softlocks the game

just goes to show how much understanding game mechanics comes down to prior experience with games with similar mechanics

(anyway we're gonna put a short prompt on screen telling people they can fly around on the cloud)

Big news: Kitsune Tail's Steam Next Fest demo is live now! Go get it at https://store.steampowered.com/app/1325260 and experience the first part of this queer furry love triangle wrapped in an SMB3 jacket

You should definitely check the options. There's a CRT shader in Kitsune Tails made by @JoshJers which isn't on by default (because people get upset by that kinda thing) but playing with it on is totally the recommended experience

If you come into my mentions saying there are bigger problems than covid and treating it like a flu isn't the end of the world you will be aggressively told to educate yourself on the realities of covid (https://covidsafetyforschools.org) with a minimum of 8 slides from that course and if you then keep minimizing covid to me you will be blocked

The slides will show that an order of magnitude more children are hospitalized from covid than flu, that it kills way more than an order of magnitude people than flu does, that it's a vascular illness not a respiratory illness like the flu, which causes significant long term increases in potentially fatal cardiovascular events, that it causes likely irreversible neuron fusing which causes cognitive impairment, that it causes IQ drops cumulative with each infection, and that it greatly increases risk of developing alzheimer's and parkinson's disease

TL;DR if you're a covid minimizer and you like to follow me I highly suggest you keep it to your fucking self

It's ridiculous that most Democrats are just watching passively as Republicans are passing mask bans. In states where Democrats hold power, they should absolutely be passing laws that codify and protect people's rights to wear a mask.

yuzu kitsune tails, a purple haired fox girl, picks up samurai armor in a tower that's rapidly filling with lava. she jumps away from the rising lava and sticks her spear in the wall, doing a dashing twirl to get on top of it. she walks off the spear and into a new scene, fighting a ghost fox with armor and spear. it stabs and she jumps over, but is caught by a follow up stab. the ghost fox over extends and its ghostly powers wane, giving yuzu a chance to bop on its head

The problem with outsourcing your chat or forum to third parties is that you don't own them. That is correct

The problem with self hosting those things yourself is that 1. nobody will use them because why aren't you just using this 3rd party app that everyone is already using and 2. have fun doing your own spam control

Seems like a bit of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation if you ask me

Like yeah sure hosting all your own stuff is great in principle but let's take gamedev, something I am particularly familiar with

If I host my games on my own site browsers like Chrome will scream "this is a file that isn't regularly downloaded ARE YOU SURE??" at anyone who tries to download them, with a very scary interface. There's jack and also shit I can do about this. So most lay people just... won't download my games from my own site

I then also need to sign my binaries which is bullshit to start with but if I put my games on Steam or itch and people use their launchers it's always fine

I also also do not receive any of the passive traffic afforded to me by those platforms so slash the proportion of people who manage to download and run my games again by a factor of 1000 because of lack of discoverability

So in summary you should definitely self host video games if you wanna make sure literally nobody will ever play them

Like yeah it would be cool if we could all just self host all our stuff and have full control over all of it but unfortunately we do, in fact, live in a society. And there are many interlocking systems arrayed against self hosting and just telling people to do it anyway will never succeed unless something is done about those systems

one thing i notice every time i fire up the windows settings menu is that with the single color flat design icons for the categories it requires 10x the cognitive load for me to recognize which category i need compared to the old control panel (which i have due to classic start) which had proper icons in color

i dont want my settings menu to be sleek and aesthetically pleasing. i want it to be functional and easy to navigate

people always tell me "mathematical notation is just like jargon, its just more efficient." no, mathematical notation is not like jargon

  1. jargon are words. anyone can put a word into a search engine and find a glossary of terms explaining what that jargon word means in some context. you can't do that with math notation unless you already know math notation

  2. jargon is almost never overloaded like mathematical notation is. the same letter or piece of punctuation can mean wildly different things in any given context and can even vary based on the font the symbol is displayed in inside one context

imagine if someone in software engineering used the symbol ⍼ instead of "garbage collector", except it only maps to "garbage collector" if it's written in sans serif. if it's written with serif, it means "compute shader" instead. but if its in comic sans it means "SIMD divide"

and also 98% of the time they used the ⍼ symbol it was inserted as a picture, not a copy/pastable unicode glyph. that's math notation
