Hellooo~

New here, so time for introducing myself!

Going by the name of Fin for my artistic endeavours, I'm a musician, author, world builder and (ttrpg) game designer on the beginning of my career.

The last few years I released a few Noise albums under the name Wise 0855-0714. The project has a mascot called Violet, and I decided to create a whole world for her to thrive in.

That is what my main project, "Celestial Neighbours" is all about: games and stories about space and music. It's currently still in the works, but there is much to come this year!

Currently also working on the game "Desert Birds", a community, crafting and exploration based post-apocalyptic, cosmic horror TTRPG for children and anyone else (suitable for ages 10+). It's about children thriving in a world that seems otherwise hopeless.

Other than creating, I also enjoy stuff. Playing video games as well as ttrpg games, learning all kinds of stuff like languages and coding, and also watching a variety of shows, mostly animated.

Got myself a corn snake roommate that I care for ever since her old human couldn't care for her any longer. I love her and I will probably talk quite a bit about her!

I love only-player-rolls-for-actions systems. Something is always happening on a roll, good or ill. There's no "nothing happens" whiffing on a miss. I also love the sense of conflict/struggle it evokes.

So Urban Logic Games turned 10 recently. We've never shipped a game (oops!) but we made this video marking the occasion anyway.

Ahhhhhh that's satisfying. Just optimised the living shit out of my virtual text rendering code.

Dungeons of Freeport SDL version now runs at the right speed. Was an easy fix too.

I'd done the text rendering in a QUICK and nasty way just to ensure it worked. It re-rendered each character every frame, which is adding and removing a LOT Of sprite nodes.

Apple Instruments showing execution of DFP before optimisation. The spike at the start is pathing a bunch of NPCs around - that should be spread over numerous frames to hide any frame drop on slower machines, so that’s my next optimisation fix.
After checking to see if the character NEEDS re-drawing, and the CPU load is MUCH lower. We still have the huge spike at the start from the pather but that’s something I’ll be fixing next.

    I am very bad at NOT working on my games sometimes.

    I am going to call it a night here though. 90% of the input code works again for Dungeons of Freeport, though it's horribly inefficient.

    But the game works! Rendered using SDL!

    I will continue work on it on Saturday, I think.

    The opening moments of Dungeons of Freeporter as the player enters the town of Freeport Hollows, and enters the tavern to talk to the author-insert barkeep. (Hey, if Seth Able Robinson can do it, so can I!)

    Dungeons of Freeport's renderer now works through SDL!

    That's a goddamn satisfying thing to see. Some minor issues to work out, and there's no input system yet, but that's pretty trivial to sort out.

    I'll be doing that tomorrow evening, I reckon.

    We have a free game intentionally designed to help teach adolescents about healthy relationships. It is regularly played in schools.

    Today I saw a review complaining that this sweet game is "indoctrinating children" and other regressive nonsense.
