By day, I write software. By preference, I'd write clojure or I'd be learning rust and elixir. By necessity, I'm writing golang and typescript.

I think the way we model and transfer data in the industry commonly is woefully inadequate and am on a jeremiad to demonstrate alternatives.

@pluralistic I do maybe want to quibble with the "we" in the concluding thought, since I actually don't believe, or don't want to believe, this is true of most people. I think most of us are living in rotting facades of democracy, where our collective options to hold greedy murderers to account seem to be narrowing to the edge of a blade.

But the overall point is sound — just as wage theft dominates all other theft, social murder dominates all other murder. We just don't tend to call it that.

@GottaLaff This is extremely condescending and myopic. I don't even disagree, but this reminds me very strongly of the pundits chortling at the thought that Trump might win the Republican primary, to say nothing of the general.

The actual fantasy at work here is that politics in the 21st century operates by precedent. If you don't know already how wrong that is, I... well, you'll be learning a lot of lessons, I suspect.

Covid isn’t over, and we shouldn’t act like it is The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s potential loosening of coronavirus isolation guidelines is a reckless, anti-public health policy that goes against science, encourages disease spread and puts everyone at greater risk. The bare minimum we should have learned from a devastating pandemic that has killed and disabled millions is that we should stay home when we are sick. Yet, inexplicably, by caving in to corporate interests, governments are encouraging people to not even do the bare minimum. The truth is that covid is still killing and disabling way too many people, and too many people are locked out of society and can’t even access medical care safely because of high levels of covid transmission. We still need science-based isolation guidance, and we need better public health protections. For some, there are understandable financial reasons they can’t take time off work for an extended period. But instead of weakening isolation guidance for everyone, governments can more effectively reduce harm by pushing for increased structural supports that reduce virus spread, such as free N95 masks and more paid sick leave and clean-air infrastructure. The pandemic isn’t over, and covid isn’t over. The coronavirus might look different than in 2020, but it is still harming many people, and we need to make long-term adjustments to make society healthier and accessible to everyone.

    Now, new research shows that corporate profits drove 53% of inflation during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023. During the 40 years prior to the pandemic, profits drove just 11% of price growth.

    Good news a from NC. Republicans passed a law that required a postcard be sent to the address of any person who took advantage of same-day registration, if the card was undeliverable by the post office the vote would be thrown out.
    (The voter would not even be notified this happened.)

    Like many voter suppression laws, it almost sounds sensible: if you don't think about it much.

    CDC advisers planned to put out weakened hospital infection control guidelines, which suggested that N95 respirators are no more protective than surgical masks.

    Advocates pushed back, and now the CDC are reconsidering and sending the draft back for revision!

    Another issue relevant to preventing transmission through air is to make sure that a draft set of recommendations cannot be misread to suggest equivalency between facemasks and NIOSH Approved respirators, which is not scientifically correct nor the intent of the draft language. Although masks can provide some level of filtration, the level of filtration is not comparable to NIOSH Approved respirators. Respiratory protection remains an important part of personal protective equipment to keep healthcare personnel safe.

    Based on the significant interest in the draft recommendations, CDC is taking a proactive step of communicating back to HICPAC some initial questions and comments on which we would like additional consideration before submitting the guideline into the Federal Register for public comment. In addition, CDC is working to expand the scope of technical backgrounds of participants on the HICPAC Isolation Guideline Workgroup and eventually among the committee members through established processes in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) regulations and guidance. The expanded workgroup and the HICPAC with the newly appointed members will review and discuss these additional considerations and guideline at the next HICPAC meeting, which is open to the public.
