I can't stand it when a perfectly fine joke gets downvoted. Did you plan on downvotes? Did you you just sabotage your own comment?

It wasn't AOC's appearance that was attacked. AOC just jumped to her (Jasmine Crockett's) defense after MTG attacked Crockett. Crockett, then, fired back at Greene.

I paid a little bit and met my wife on one. No idea why anyone has a problem with paying for something they use. Two children later, I would say a lifetime the woman of my dreams made the few months that I paid for the tinder subscription was worth it. There were useful features then that came with it. No idea about it now.

Finally an alternative to Big Tech, your new open-source mobile ecosystem ( f-droid.org )

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to engage in a mobile ecosystem outside of the watchful eye of the Big Tech giants and gatekeepers? A system that includes everything from operating systems, to app stores, to cloud services, messaging apps, email servers and more? A system that puts your privacy first, believes in a...

Waydroid is nice and even indispensable for me, but you can't use any banking apps, for example.

My comment wasn't meant to negate yours. Waydroid was great to mention!! It is and can be very useful to accomplish alot. I just wanted to clarify that it, unfortunately, can't be used as a full replacement for Android or one of its derivatives.

edit: grammar

You don't know as much as you think you do.

I agree that by and large most patent law is rigged in favor of corporations. All I'm saying is that things are always more complex than simple black and white. I chose a simple response because I believe that you have already made up your mind and it would be a very difficult and nigh impossible conversation. I do like the energy that you put into looking out for people though and that should be commended.

I'm thinking seriously about getting Google out of my life, and trying NextCloud.

Looking to get a personal account through a managed provider.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

How does it compare to ownCloud?

Any hosts I should look at or avoid?

Any apps I should get for it, or avoid?

Any issues I should be aware of before I switch?

Same person answering from Lemmy because character limit.

I don't know much about digiKam, but looking at it got me interested in checking it out! One problem I have with Immich is that there is really good Android integration with its app, but poor Desktop integration (I use a web app).

For Immich, I suppose you could mount an external library and use that same folder for digiKam. Immich will store its own set of files in its data structure for the external library, not the pictures just it's own metadata as I understand it. Any changes will be reflected in Immich after a library scan. (I will be trying this option soon.😁)

You could do the same with Nextcloud by just mounting the Nextcloud drive and setting its photos folder as the folder for digiKam, I suppose. You would be losing out mainly on Android integration with the Immich app. I can't whatever the opposite of recommend the Nextcloud options enough.

Smart! Since posting my answer, I've been looking at it and I was planning in doing just that or something similar. I already upload my photos to Nextcloud just as a backup mechanism without the Photos app installed. I could easily set this up tonight to test. Thanks for the tip!

Same. We are allowed to carry knives in to work so I carry a work knife in and it never sets the thing off, but my laptop in my backpack does every single day.

Does going on the internet to insult people make you feel better? Maybe if you didn't try to separate people out into camps and assign negative or positive qualities to those groups based on nothing more than your own ideological bent, but instead had a little chat with people like they were people you would be a little happier. Like, you know, on the inside.

Regardless, I'd like to see the "real data" that says that the assertions of the person to whom you are responding were incorrect. That would be an interesting read.

Cloud Hosted VMs

Not sure if cloud hosted VMs count as selfhosted for the purposes of this community, but I run a lot of services at the house and want to have a few services that require high availability run in a cloud external to my home. Specifically, I want to run Vaultwarden, an email server and a VPN. My question is one of...

For the hypervisor I recommend either Proxmox or XCP-ng. XCP-ng is technically a better hypervisor, but I personally use Proxmox because I like the UI.

For the NAS OS, I use and recommend TrueNAS Scale. You can run Docker containers on it. All this being said, I've never used Unsaid so I don't know how they compare.

Out of curiosity, why move from OMV? I was thinking about trying it out for a second NAS.

I'm 40 and I grew up listening to rap mostly and metal. I grew up in an era where, at least where I lived, there was this "I listen to everything but rap and country" attitude. There is really great music everywhere you look. It took me a while to look at country to realize what I was missing, though, so I guess I was a part of the problem.

Alright boys, I've been converted to the light side and have installed F-Droid. Now what?

Basically title. I waited on installing F droid for a long time because my phone threw many scary warnings when I tried a long time ago. But now I have it, and I got some fossify apps, but since there is no "Editor's Picks" on F- droid I dont really know where to go from here....

denshirenji ,
@denshirenji@lemmy.world avatar

What I have installed:

From Obtanium:

  • Most Fossify Apps
  • Nextcloud
  • Material Files
  • Immich
  • DAVx & ICSx (nextcloud contacts and calendar sync)
  • DNS66
  • Jellyfin
  • Spotube

From FDroid (really droidify from various repositories)

  • FUTO Voice Input
  • Breezy Weather
  • K-9
  • Libera Reader
  • FFUpdater
  • Joplin

The list is massive and I'm on mobile and hate tiny keyboards. I can finish the list later if you/y'all are interested. The only thing that I actively use that is not FOSS on my phone is Google Messages, which I guess is a bit hypocritical, but its too good. Just the ability to react to messages makes it worth it for me.

I also highly recommend Grayjay. It is the best (IMHO) YouTube replacement. It is cross service, like I have odysee, nebula, youtube, and various peertube instances added as sources.

As far as what apps to watch out for, someone mentioned Simple Mobile Tools. Otherwise, I would stay away from apps that are not being updated anymore or are otherwise way too old.

Thank you for recommending Innertune. Checking it out now.

It works perfectly well. I find the ui bit clunky personally, but functionally it works very well. I don't have much time to read anymore though, so I rarely use it to be honest.
