pre-this insane ruling Biden could do all manner of things by executive order. Just like Trump did. "But why didn't he Cameron?" I hear you asking. Because he's a cowardly, spineless, neo-liberal centrist who serves the same corporate masters as the rest of the political elite and his one major concern is upholding and entrenching empire. ARE YOU ALL NEW HERE?

also I saw a thing that said "if we all saw people from the 'third world' as fully human, we'd be forced to admit that US presidents have had impunity for quite some time" and yeah, that. Like, they really didn't need a ruling for this. ALSO most of our political systems were written by idiots who might as well have been libertarian economists "Look, everyone will be a good faith actor and it will all work out based on merit". To which, as always, I wonder aloud...

Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

edit: because I don't know measles from smallpox

@futurebird my understanding (which is vague and not based on expertise) is that measles resets your immune system to zero. So that’s a fun thing to look forward to.

Why do you appreciate unions?

I’ll start:

Weekends off
Paid vacations
Work breaks
Sick leave
Paid holidays
No child labor
Safer working conditions
Health care and retirement benefits

@rbreich Every job I've had where I wasn't unionized I was treated like shit/used up by my employer, every one where I was in a union there was the collective agreement to provide the guard rail to stop that from happening.

Anyone at the anti-police brutality demonstration in #montreal or have news from it?

Humanity has never experienced a February like this one before. And if such weather extremes are shocking to you, imagine the disruption to plants, to insects, to birds and to other animals who have no way to understand what's happening, and who can't possibly adapt fast enough.

Capitalist industry is murdering our only biosphere.

"Historic winter heat wave smashes records across U.S."

The modern winter climate history of the Central U.S. was rewritten this week, as more than 130 monthly high temperature records were set from Texas to Michigan. Veteran Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore noted that 132 cities and towns set monthly records, calling the feat "insane."

The worst thing about all this (not mentioned in the article) is that it’s part of a vicious cycle, a self-reinforcing feedback loop.

These unprecedented heat waves bake the soil and dry out vegetation, releasing carbon into the atmosphere. They also make wildfires and forest fires far more likely, which again release even more carbon into the atmosphere. That increased concentration of greenhouse gases raises global temperatures, which causes more and more of these searing heat waves… and the cycle repeats and repeats and repeats.

@breadandcircuses 14C yesterday and the day before, today it's -11C (feels like -22). We've broken everything so horribly.
