been quite a few unusual-to-the-modern-eye keyboards floating by the tl this morning, so here’s a contribution. this type of fully mechanical adding machine would ordinarily run up to nine for every place, but since every key press just adds its value anyway, there’s no difference between pressing ‘8’ once or ‘4’ twice. my understanding is that the latter was often preferred, even on full-size models, for efficiency. so these compact units were ultimately a bit of a no-brainer!

this one does not work perfectly, but it does work surprisingly well considering the internal mechanical bits are made of fiberboard!

@epidiah they are available for hour-at-a-time borrowing on the internet archive, if you’re curious! i started reading there and quickly decided i wanted them in heavy form… from what i’ve read so far, they seem to be living up to what i was hoping for! https://archive.org/details/musimathicsmathe0000loyd_k4g3

@BestSongInTheWorld

@haribosilverado

This last one is also a white supremacist, so, yeah. I think their account is suspended from my instance but still active on Infosec.exchange, but I could be wrong. Update: I have been informed that Infosec has indeed suspended this account. Thanks!

Also observe these accounts interacting with a couple of somewhat well-known faux leftist accounts: Flexghost and RadicalEgoCom. Recommend those for a block as well.

@SallyStrange appreciate the heads-up… fwiw, the last one throws a ‘you don’t have permission to see this page’ error when going to their page on infosec.exchange, which… maybe means they’ve been suspended from that server? (i mainly bring that up because i remain pretty confused about how to figure these things out 😅)

"it's all stored locally" is not a panacea for these alarming privacy-invading products!

what exactly is stored locally? what data is extracted from that local data and sent to the company's servers? is that local data being backed somewhere?

#AI #privacy

brhfl ,
@brhfl@digipres.club avatar

@molly0xfff while it’s certainly the least concerning part of this, the amount of local writes that ms seems to be suggesting here certainly can’t be good for ssd longevity either!

I keep seeing these stories about huge investments Microsoft, Amazon, and other major tech companies are making around the world. They’re almost always for massive, resource-hungry data centers to power their AI ambitions.

Biden announces $3.3B investment from Microsoft for AI data center in Mount Pleasant
Microsoft to invest $1.7 billion into Al infrastructure in Indonesia, CEO Satya Nadella says
Microsoft to invest $2.9 bln to expand Al, cloud infra in Japan

@parismarx @SallyStrange “in mount pleasant […] on foxconn land” so from one heap of tech smoke and mirrors to the next, i guess…

    the nyt hack who thinks the sounds of protest would somehow ruin 4′33″ got me thinking about a wwii-era recording, i believe of solo piano, where an air raid siren went off nearby. the pianist (a woman, i believe) apparently insisted on finishing the performance and leaving the recording as is, marred by the reality of the wartime world.

    i cannot for the life of me remember who it was… and web search in 2024 is obviously no help. does this ring any bells for anyone?

    OMG look who I met on my walk to the bus stop this morning! It’s a little brown snake or garter snake??(not venomous, small, gentle, native) Look at this amazing New Yorker! So cute. They were sunning on the sidewalk so I moved them to a warm hidden rock. I worry someone will kill it just for being a snake. Happily the school kids who stopped to watch were delighted if a little scared. This snake has made my day! #nyc #snake #Storeria

    I had a hilarious nonverbal conversation with this robin at the parklet near the lake yesterday morning. If I were better at photo editing, I'd insert some sort of thought bubble for em on the right-hand side of this photo to capture eir purse-lipped, cranky-chicken spirit.

    (If anyone out there has their own take or presumed caption, I'd love to hear it.)

    Folks!

    FOLKS!

    I fixed my audio issues!*

    And now I'm ALIVE with the power to make my computer beep and boop with Clojure!

    • I'm on linux, so no audio issues are ever fixed, merely kicked down the road a bit, but I'm celebrating the minor victory.

    @epidiah whoa, i was unaware of overtone! my lisp is rusty but still might be one of the more approachable audio programming environments… and it interfaces with shadertoy?! 😻

    @epidiah i love the programming books from the home 8-bit era because they were largely about learning how to solve a problem on your own… not which $100 software package to use or how to set yourself up for a career in programming the end of the world, but like ‘here are a bunch of basic routines for doing x and y, slap ‘em all together and you can balance your checkbook’

    they really treated the computer as a malleable box of nothing, waiting for you to find their purpose.
